In a concise and organized book, the 36 studies are short, melodically simple, in a moderate range (without clef changes), and will help prepare the student for more advanced material such as Blazhevich. With a new Foreword, this edition is a faithful copy of the earlier Wimbledon publication which is now out of print. Ralph Sauer's intermediate level Clef Studies book is now available from Cherry Classics Music in print and direct download form.

Published by Gordon Cherry (A0.792139). The Brahms Ten Studies were originally written for Horn or Trumpet and were first published soon after his death in 1897. Unfortunately there is not much written about the origins of the Studies. There are questions as to whether they are original or manufactured by an enterprising musician. In my opinion, a few of the studies, especially the slower ones have the stamp of the Master on them. Mr. Cherry believes that the Studies are authentic. It is fairly certain that Brahms’s father did play some horn and there is a good chance that Johannes performed in a horn club as well. The Studies were all originally written in the key of C treble clef. Mr. Cherry has taken the liberty to transpose many of them into different keys for musical variety and technique. This is a common practice for many Trumpet and Horn study books. He has also added some breath marks and alternate slide positions. Many thanks to friend & colleague, Ralph Sauer, who helped with the editing of these studies. These studies are all in bass clef and appropriate for performers of intermediate level and higher.

We are proud to have brought them back into the light again to stand out as the great studies they are. Here is what Charlie Vernon, a student of William Hill has to say about these studies: When I look back on my time with Mr. Hill, 95% of all lessons that I had with him were spent studying music fundamentals from Arban, Schlossberg and Bordogni. Along with those studies we also spent time working on the basic flexibility exercises, which we now have as the Versatility Studies. I am so thankful for his insistence on the importance of the basics because that way of teaching has become the way I practice and teach all my lessons. He was a great inspiration to all of his students, and with these old books I hope to help many players who will use them and become better players and teachers.

Musical legend, Jack Teagarden is regarded as one of the finest jazz Trombonists of all time. His relatively unknown HIGH TONE STUDIES FOR TROMBONE were written in 1936. Teagarden's studies are designed to teach the student how to reach into the high register up to high D, through the patient and slow practice of four introductory warm-ups and fifty-one progressively difficult exercises. None of the studies are more than three lines in length, forcing the student to rest frequently in his own words. In reading through his concise instructions at the beginning of the book, it is obvious that Teagarden had put a lot of thought into his technique. These studies are appropriate for intermediate to advanced performers. Cherry Classics is proud to have teamed up with his son, Joe and the Teagarden Estate, to bring this book back to life.

Published by Gordon Cherry (A0.810822). Ralph Sauer has beautifully edited Volume II of the Milde Concert Studies. They will add much to the Trombone study/etude literature. We look forward to many performers using these valuable studies to improve their technique and musicianship. Originally written for the bassoon, these studies were favorites of the great trombone teacher, Emory Remington (1891-1971). While perhaps not concert material, they provide much more musical interest than the typical étude book. I have added dynamics and changed phrasings to be more suitable for the trombone while keeping the wide tessitura and the many clef changes of the original. Alternate positions are included to make the music more fluid. I have not indicated whether an alternate position is to be played slightly higher or lower. The trombonist should know what adjustments are needed, and adding the small sharps or flats would only clutter the notation. These enjoyable and challenging studies will provide many hours of pleasurable practice. I have returned to these two volumes often over the years and hope that you will also find them useful and rewarding. Ralph Sauer

The Müller Studies, Op. 64 were originally written for horn by Bernhard Eduard Müller who performed as 2nd horn in the famous Gewandhausorchester of Leipzig from 1876 to 1920. One can only imagine the great artists whom he performed with during his 44 year tenure there. The Studies, Op. 64 have been beautifully edited for Trombone with f-attachment by Benny Sluchin with valuable, detailed commentary. These studies can become part of the library of every serious Trombonist. Look for the Bass Trombone version which will be published shortly.

His last employment was with the Long Beach Municipal Band. These books were first published in 1916. Besides trombone playing, Stacy had a passion for aviation and invented something to do with stick control for flying smaller airplanes. He was regarded by his peers as a pioneer in aviation. These three marvelous books Stacy completed are now available in one volume. This will help perpetuate Stacy's legacy and keep trombone players all over the world improving their practice and quality of their playing for years to come. Published by Gordon Cherry (A0.810972). Albert Robert Mueller (Müller) was a German trombonist born in 1849. He initially received violin lessons and discovered his talent for trombone playing at the age of twelve. He eventually settled in Leipzig and became a member of the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra as well as a teacher at the Royal Conservatory of Music. He wrote the School for Trombone in 1902. (Wikipedia) The School for Trombone (part of our Vintage Brass Series, not to be confused with the Technical Etudes) is a very detailed and comprehensive book in three volumes totalling 208 pages, the text being divided into German, English and Russian languages. • Volume I includes detailed lessons on music theory including all scales and keys, rhythm, time signatures, rests, accents, accidentals, explanations of tempo markings, dynamics, posture, tone, a table of positions and notes. The lessons go through different keys starting very slowly and methodically with short exercises....not going too fast for the beginning student. Along the way Mueller inserts easy duets to perform with teacher and student, including many Bach chorales, etc. to get tuning and tone solidified. • Volume II for the intermediate level student, begins with the first studies of slurs and legato. He introduces simple songs and famous melodies including more duets. The exercises get progressively more difficult and include the entire collection of ornaments. • Volume III, for the more advanced student, introduces tenor and alto clefs in scales and studies including more duets. Published by Gordon Cherry (A0.792345). The Otto Langey Tutors were the method books of the early 20th century. Langey, a cellist, was a German immigrant to America who wrote method books for most of the major instruments. Many young instrumentalists used these books for their first studies including Mr. Sauer who in the foreword of the book describes how the Langey Method was one of his mainstays during his early musical years. I started using this method book at age 14 with my teacher Robert Harper (bass trombonist with the Philadelphia Orchestra from 1943 to 1981) and still refer to it today. Mr. Harper would stop me multiple times (even within the same measure!) to point out the little things that I had ignored or didn’t play correctly. Without this ability to play what is written, it is impossible to build a musical interpretation later on. In addition to Langey’s own etudes, a selection of etudes by other composers (Vaubaron, Belgke, Dieppo, Manna, Clodomir) plus some solo pieces, round out this wonderful old book. Published by Gordon Cherry (A0.792383). The Otto Langey Tutors were the method books of the early 20th century. Langey, a cellist, was a German immigrant to America who wrote method books for most of the major instruments. Many young instrumentalists used these books for their first studies including Mr. Sauer who in the foreword of the book describes how the Langey Method was one of his mainstays during his early musical years. I started using this method book at age 14 with my teacher Robert Harper (bass trombonist with the Philadelphia Orchestra from 1943 to 1981) and still refer to it today. They are prized for their lyric beauty, and also for their development of endurance, upper range, legato technique, styling and more. Other bass clef instrumentalists use Rochut. These Twenty Counterparts may be practiced and played as etudes alone. They are similar in style to the Bordogni; some are harder and some are easier than the Bordogni originals. But the primary intent was for recreational duet playing and for the trombone studio. Duets are fun and more, contributing to sightreading, intonation, ensemble, style-matching, confidence, independence, etc. As with the piano accompaniments, the duet parts also enhance the original melodies.
