The intention is for the trombonist to walk while playing the composition. Either the trombonist can memorize the composition or play with a lyre. One option in concert performance is to begin the work behind the audience or offstage and then proceed to the stage or around the audience.The music is marked Slow, Stately Processional, sending a powerful message of expressiveness . There are passages of multiphonics that add a mysterious feel to the 4-minute work.Appropriate for advanced performers.

Published by Gordon Cherry (A0.810972). Albert Robert Mueller (Müller) was a German trombonist born in 1849. He initially received violin lessons and discovered his talent for trombone playing at the age of twelve. He eventually settled in Leipzig and became a member of the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra as well as a teacher at the Royal Conservatory of Music. He wrote the School for Trombone in 1902. (Wikipedia) The School for Trombone (part of our Vintage Brass Series, not to be confused with the Technical Etudes) is a very detailed and comprehensive book in three volumes totalling 208 pages, the text being divided into German, English and Russian languages. • Volume I includes detailed lessons on music theory including all scales and keys, rhythm, time signatures, rests, accents, accidentals, explanations of tempo markings, dynamics, posture, tone, a table of positions and notes. The lessons go through different keys starting very slowly and methodically with short exercises....not going too fast for the beginning student. Along the way Mueller inserts easy duets to perform with teacher and student, including many Bach chorales, etc. to get tuning and tone solidified. • Volume II for the intermediate level student, begins with the first studies of slurs and legato. He introduces simple songs and famous melodies including more duets. The exercises get progressively more difficult and include the entire collection of ornaments. • Volume III, for the more advanced student, introduces tenor and alto clefs in scales and studies including more duets. Published by Gordon Cherry (A0.792269). The Clarke Method for Trombone has some uncommon features not found in other method books. 1. First, is the use of the key of C for the initial 33 exercises. The author then progresses through all of the keys, alternating the sharp (first) and flat keys through to six sharps and six flats by the end of exercise 155. 2. Secondly, there are no exercises devoted solely to minor keys. However, Clarke employs the minor mode in all of his exercises through the use of scales and arpeggios, so in fact the performer is receiving a steady diet of minor melody built in for him/her. 3. Thirdly, Clarke uses no metronome markings. He explains; each exercise should be practiced carefully over and over again until every difficulty is thoroughly overcome – until the exercise can be played through correctly – before going on to the next. His purpose is to avoid speeding through them. Clarke’s exercises are progressive throughout the keys, however each one starts out easily in order to keep the student focused on the new key and the new progression notes that come with it. For the advanced performer, this book is great to use as a way to ease back into shape after a rest from the instrument, allowing the performer to relearn the instrument carefully and methodically. I use it also for tone building, phrasing, and breath control. Throughout the book, Clarke reminds the performer to always produce a noble sound, stressing natural playing (without forcing) and relaxation. His phrase, the breath is the life of the tone, is a phrase that Remington used throughout his great teaching career as well. Clarke talks about tonguing, saying that, the tongue is used merely as an aid in articulating – not as a necessity... the tone does not depend on the tongue... the tongue should not be made too important...

His last employment was with the Long Beach Municipal Band. These books were first published in 1916. Besides trombone playing, Stacy had a passion for aviation and invented something to do with stick control for flying smaller airplanes. He was regarded by his peers as a pioneer in aviation. These three marvelous books Stacy completed are now available in one volume. This will help perpetuate Stacy's legacy and keep trombone players all over the world improving their practice and quality of their playing for years to come. We are proud to have brought them back into the light again to stand out as the great studies they are. Here is what Charlie Vernon, a student of William Hill has to say about these studies: When I look back on my time with Mr. Hill, 95% of all lessons that I had with him were spent studying music fundamentals from Arban, Schlossberg and Bordogni. Along with those studies we also spent time working on the basic flexibility exercises, which we now have as the Versatility Studies. I am so thankful for his insistence on the importance of the basics because that way of teaching has become the way I practice and teach all my lessons. He was a great inspiration to all of his students, and with these old books I hope to help many players who will use them and become better players and teachers.

The Ernest Clarke Updated Method for Trombone is the result of James Biddlecome’s study of the original method book with his teacher, Roger Smith, as well as using it and modifying it in his own teaching studio for over thirty years. This updated version marks F-attachment and alternate positions and includes additional exercises composed by the editor with minor scales, mixed meter, slurring and long tones, most of which are left alone by Clarke. The first 20 of Clarke’s exercises are replaced by the above, making it more of an intermediate/advanced method compared to the original. Mr. Biddlecome’s edition is very well thought out and should be a staple for any serious young performer of the Trombone.

They are prized for their lyric beauty, and also for their development of endurance, upper range, legato technique, styling and more. Other bass clef instrumentalists use Rochut. These Twenty Counterparts may be practiced and played as etudes alone. They are similar in style to the Bordogni; some are harder and some are easier than the Bordogni originals.
