Published by Gordon Cherry (A0.792345). The Otto Langey Tutors were the method books of the early 20th century. Langey, a cellist, was a German immigrant to America who wrote method books for most of the major instruments. Many young instrumentalists used these books for their first studies including Mr. Sauer who in the foreword of the book describes how the Langey Method was one of his mainstays during his early musical years. I started using this method book at age 14 with my teacher Robert Harper (bass trombonist with the Philadelphia Orchestra from 1943 to 1981) and still refer to it today. The rudiments of music are clearly explained, and the scale and arpeggio exercises are excellent for avoiding the boredom that can sometimes set in with other methods. The short etudes starting on page 42 were some of Mr. Harper’s favorites. With these interesting little pieces, I learned how to play exactly what is on the page. Mr. Harper would stop me multiple times (even within the same measure!) to point out the little things that I had ignored or didn’t play correctly. Without this ability to play what is written, it is impossible to build a musical interpretation later on. In addition to Langey’s own etudes, a selection of etudes by other composers (Vaubaron, Belgke, Dieppo, Manna, Clodomir) plus some solo pieces, round out this wonderful old book. If I were limited to one etude book on the proverbial desert island, this would be it. Ralph Sauer This book of over 120 pages is suitable for performers from beginner right up to advanced. Langey, a cellist, was a German immigrant to America who wrote method books for most of the major instruments. Many young instrumentalists used these books for their first studies including Mr. Sauer who in the foreword of the book describes how the Langey Method was one of his mainstays during his early musical years. I started using this method book at age 14 with my teacher Robert Harper (bass trombonist with the Philadelphia Orchestra from 1943 to 1981) and still refer to it today. The rudiments of music are clearly explained, and the scale and arpeggio exercises are excellent for avoiding the boredom that can sometimes set in with other methods. The short etudes starting on page 42 were some of Mr. Harper’s favorites. With these interesting little pieces, I learned how to play exactly what is on the page. Mr. Harper would stop me multiple times (even within the same measure!) to point out the little things that I had ignored or didn’t play correctly. Without this ability to play what is written, it is impossible to build a musical interpretation later on. In addition to Langey’s own etudes, a selection of etudes by other composers (Vaubaron, Belgke, Dieppo, Manna, Clodomir) plus some solo pieces, round out this wonderful old book. If I were limited to one etude book on the proverbial desert island, this would be it. This book of over 120 pages is suitable for performers from beginner right up to advanced. Whoa. Beavis and Butthead with the low brass; a most stimulating prospect. A previous and, I'm sure, less interesting engagement kept me away, but the formative idea behind Behavioral Science was born: how do you civilize the eternal adolescent that is the trombone/trombonist without taking away its/his/her essential energy and joie de vivre? Behavioral Science, then, is about the trombone and, to a degree, trombone players themselves (which, by the way, I was once one myself and my daughter presently is). The piece begins with the trombone completely out of control - a raucous, screaming, stuttering length of lacquered plumbing. Across the span of the piece the trombone gradually learns lyricism and self-discipline, gaining maturity and, ultimately, self-mastery. Behavioral Science concludes with a series of extremely virtuosic passages that require, as they do, the most exacting control imaginable. Behavioral Science was composed between December, 1997 and February, 1998. It is dedicated with great affection and gratitude to Neil Hatler for his help, advice, and tireless dedication to the piece.

More… Jazz Licks at Your Fingertips is a sequel to Jazz Licks at your Fingertips This study contains over 80 jazz licks/phrases in several different keys. There are progressions on the ii7 - V7 in both major and minor keys. There are also major, minor 6th and 7ths as well as dominant, diminished and augmented chords. As you go on you will find licks on flatted and raised ninths, augmented 11ths and 13th chords. Most important however, are the Application Exercises. There are six jazz etudes which contain chord progressions found in many of the jazz standards. You will have the opportunity to use the licks in measures that deal with the chords that you have dealt with in the previous section. There are parts where you are asked to fill in your own licks in between the written melody. All the material that you have just worked on in the the last section can be used in each etude. By the end of the study, you can improve on the enitre song. It is a unique method that I have developed over the past 50 years. If you follow the method and work on all the exercises as directed, you will take your first steps in the Real way pros play jazz. There is even accompaniment provided for each etude. There are mp4s that are available at no extra cost if you have a device that will play them. There is also accompaniment provided at the end of the book if have musician friends play along with you. The process for obtaining the mp4s is explained at the beginning of the book under Application Exercises.
