Langey, a cellist, was a German immigrant to America who wrote method books for most of the major instruments. Many young instrumentalists used these books for their first studies including Mr. Sauer who in the foreword of the book describes how the Langey Method was one of his mainstays during his early musical years. I started using this method book at age 14 with my teacher Robert Harper (bass trombonist with the Philadelphia Orchestra from 1943 to 1981) and still refer to it today. The rudiments of music are clearly explained, and the scale and arpeggio exercises are excellent for avoiding the boredom that can sometimes set in with other methods. The short etudes starting on page 42 were some of Mr. Harper’s favorites. With these interesting little pieces, I learned how to play exactly what is on the page. Mr. Harper would stop me multiple times (even within the same measure!) to point out the little things that I had ignored or didn’t play correctly. Without this ability to play what is written, it is impossible to build a musical interpretation later on. In addition to Langey’s own etudes, a selection of etudes by other composers (Vaubaron, Belgke, Dieppo, Manna, Clodomir) plus some solo pieces, round out this wonderful old book. If I were limited to one etude book on the proverbial desert island, this would be it. Ralph Sauer This book of over 120 pages is suitable for performers from beginner right up to advanced. Published by Gordon Cherry (A0.792139). The Brahms Ten Studies were originally written for Horn or Trumpet and were first published soon after his death in 1897. Unfortunately there is not much written about the origins of the Studies. There are questions as to whether they are original or manufactured by an enterprising musician. In my opinion, a few of the studies, especially the slower ones have the stamp of the Master on them. Mr. Cherry believes that the Studies are authentic. It is fairly certain that Brahms’s father did play some horn and there is a good chance that Johannes performed in a horn club as well. The Studies were all originally written in the key of C treble clef. Mr. Cherry has taken the liberty to transpose many of them into different keys for musical variety and technique. This is a common practice for many Trumpet and Horn study books. He has also added some breath marks and alternate slide positions. Many thanks to friend & colleague, Ralph Sauer, who helped with the editing of these studies. These studies are all in bass clef and appropriate for performers of intermediate level and higher.

Published by Gordon Cherry (A0.792764). Aaron Hettinga has arranged five fantastic Smears for Trombone and Piano by American composer Nathaniel Cleophus Davis. These Smears were very popular and cool to perform when they were composed over a century ago. Mr. Hettinga has combined all five of them into one collection. They are appropriate for a moderately advanced performers and are about 6 minutes in length each.Here is an abridged description of them by Bass Trombonist Douglas Yeo.African American trombonist, composer, and bandleader Nathaniel Cleophas Davis (also known as Nathan Davis) was born in Tennessee on August 14, 1888. By 1908, he had moved to Nashville where he directed the band at the Tennessee School for the Blind.Among his musical compositions were five trombone features for band in ragtime style which included Oh, Slip It Man (1916), Mr. Trombonology (1917), and Miss Trombonism (1918). Upon returning from fighting in WWI, Nathaniel Davis continued writing ragtime trombone features including Master Trombone (1919) and a tribute to his wartime service in France, Trombone Francais (1921). Nathaniel Davis died in Atlanta, Georgia, on December 19, 1972, at the age of 84 and is buried in South View Cemetery, Atlanta.

Published by Gordon Cherry (A0.792651). Bach's Partita BWV 1013 is a wonderful unaccompanied work, and in all likelihood, was written for the Transverse Flute, though that is by no means certain. In fact, there is an earlier version of the Allemande for a keyboard or stringed instrument. The Partita, originally in the key of A minor has been transposed down into D minor, putting it into a perfect range for Solo Trombone. The work is in four movements: Allemande, Corrente, Sarabande and Bourrée Anglaise. It is appropriate for advanced performers. Cherry Classics has acquired Ralph Sauer's earlier edition of the Bach Partita, BWV 1013 for Trombone Alone from Balquhidder Music. Mr. Sauer has taken this opportunity to update the transcription.

We are proud to have brought them back into the light again to stand out as the great studies they are. Here is what Charlie Vernon, a student of William Hill has to say about these studies: When I look back on my time with Mr. Hill, 95% of all lessons that I had with him were spent studying music fundamentals from Arban, Schlossberg and Bordogni. Along with those studies we also spent time working on the basic flexibility exercises, which we now have as the Versatility Studies. I am so thankful for his insistence on the importance of the basics because that way of teaching has become the way I practice and teach all my lessons. He was a great inspiration to all of his students, and with these old books I hope to help many players who will use them and become better players and teachers.

The Ernest Clarke Updated Method for Trombone is the result of James Biddlecome’s study of the original method book with his teacher, Roger Smith, as well as using it and modifying it in his own teaching studio for over thirty years. This updated version marks F-attachment and alternate positions and includes additional exercises composed by the editor with minor scales, mixed meter, slurring and long tones, most of which are left alone by Clarke. The first 20 of Clarke’s exercises are replaced by the above, making it more of an intermediate/advanced method compared to the original. Mr. Biddlecome’s edition is very well thought out and should be a staple for any serious young performer of the Trombone.

These Fantasias are part of a collection of Twelve Fantasias for Viola da Gamba Solo, originally published in 1735 but considered lost until rediscovered in 2015. Mr. Sauer has beautifully transcribed them for unaccompanied Tenor Trombone and are appropriate for advanced performers. His editorial dynamics have been included as suggestions. Each of the Three Fantasias has contrasting fast and slow movements. This edition will also soon be available on iTunes as an eBook.
