Presented here is a Canzona published around 1615 for 6 brass. A variety of substitute parts are also included to handle the trombone parts with French horns and tubas. A great work that draws from Gabrieli’s many styles. The piece starts with a song like tune that is repeated throughout. Each variation is separated by a 3/4 dance-like chanson repeated throughout. The final cadence is classic Gabrieli with its grand finale. A Gabrieli instrumental ensemble work that provides listeners with a variety of common Gabrieli touches all in one piece without requiring a lot of musical forces.

By age 6 she was playing piano to help support her large family. At age 15, she turned professional, and by the time she was 20, she had made a name for herself nationally not only as a jazz musician but also as an arranger and composer. In 1943, she wrote a piece titled Satchel Mouth Baby, which she recorded the next year with her group, Mary Lou and her Chosen Five. Three years later, Bill Johnson and His Musical Notes recorded Williams’ song after he and Leo Snub Mosley had worked on the lyrics and changed the title to Pretty Eyed Baby. Others would go on to record Pretty Eyed Baby, among them: Frankie Laine and Jo Stafford, Jane Turzy, Johnnie Ray, Peggy Lee and Roy Eldridge. This arrangement skips along at about 120 bpm. It contains common swing rhythmic figures, and all notes are well within the normal playing range of most brass musicians. Horn in F and Trombone carry the melodic load, but all instruments get a turn at playing lead. This is a fun piece, so don’t be surprised if your audience starts clapping along while you’re playing. Completed in 2021, performance time for Pretty Eyed Baby runs about 3 minutes,9 seconds. Steinberg (A0.870434). This arrangement of a popular fanfare from Handel’s Water Music has been commonly played at church services and weddings for many years. The Water Music itself is a collection of pieces written at different times between 1717 and 1733. It is not clear as to the setting these were written for although most speculation seems to believe that these were pieces written for King George I during his many river outings. The collection of the pieces was assembled and published under the title Water Music in 1740. Although commonly written for small orchestra or larger brass ensembles, usually with two F Horns, this arrangement has been specially scored for a standard brass quintet instrumentation. In addition, the seldom played middle section has also been included. The fanfare’s popular melody is easily recognized by audiences and the work is still as exciting today as it was when first performed in the 18th century.

The Dutch Composer, Johan B Kok (1889-1954), wrote over two- hundred compositions for different combinations of instruments, all of which included the Mandolin or the Mandolin Orchestra. ‘Joska’, originally written for two Mandolins, Mandola and Guitar, bears the subtitle and style of the ‘Zigeuner Romance’ or ‘Gypsy Romance’, and it may well have been inspired by Monti’s better known ‘Czardas’, which, significantly, was also originally written for Mandolin and Piano. Both pieces have contrasting slow and fast sections, which is typical of Central European ‘tavern music’, commonly associated with Hungary. ‘Czardas’, of course, means ‘tavern’ in Hungarian.

It was allegedly written for a 5-shilling bet in Stalybridge on January 30, 1912 and performed the next night at the local music hall. Now commonly called It’s a Long Way to Tipperary, the original printed music calls it It’s a Long, Long Way to Tipperary. It became popular among soldiers in the First World War and is remembered as a song of World War I. Pack Up Your Troubles in Your Old Kit-Bag, and Smile, Smile, Smile is the full name of the World War I marching song, published in 1915 in London. It was written by Welsh songwriters, George Henry Powell under the pseudonym of George Asaf, and set to music by his brother Felix Powell. It was featured in the American show Her Soldier Boy, which opened in December 1916. This skillful arrangement by Jari Villanueva captures the flavor of the original tunes and would be a great selection commemorating the 100th anniversary of World War I. The arrangement includes the verses of the tunes and the British bugle call Fall In. This clever arrangement culminates in a rousing section that superimposes both tunes. Included is a Full Score and parts for Brass Ensemble. Also included are substitute parts for Eb Horns and Treble Clef Baritone Horn A retired member of the United States Air Force Band where he served on the Music Production staff (as well as a trumpeter and bugler) and a student of Bill Holcombe, Jari Villanueva continues writing for different ensembles. His arrangements are played by bands, brass ensembles and brass quintets all over the country including many military groups.
