Presented here is a wonderful Canzona published around 1615 for 10 brass with substitute parts for trumpets and trombones. The 4th Trombone part can also be played with Tuba if so desired. A great representative work of Gabrieli’s, this piece presents a 1 bar dance-like rhythm that is repeated and underscored throughout. After many variations, a chanson-like dance theme can be heard followed by a final presentation of the original melody that heads to a grand conclusion. An impressive and fun work for almost any church or concert setting.

Published by Sweetwater Brass Press (A0.808682).     After You’ve Gone, composed in 1918 by Turner Layton (melody) and Henry Creamer (lyrics), was a hit from the beginning. Al Jolson introduced it to live audiences, Marion Harris’ record went to #1 in early 1919, and since then dozens of artists have recorded it . . . and many are still doing so. The words are rather sad-she’s leaving and he’s trying to get her to stay-but played up tempo, the melody is bouncy and fun. That sad-versus-happy dichotomy is incorporated in this arrangement. It begins with a bright, bouncy introduction and first-time-through of the chorus, then slows so the Horn in F can play a melancholic and somewhat schmaltzy rendition of the verse. The Tuba provides a transition back to the upbeat chorus, and we are again off to the races. Layton’s melody slips and slides from one instrument to the next (with the Tuba getting an entire iteration all to itself!), until the pace again slows for a 4-bar reminder of the sentimental verse, which then gives way to a rousing Dixieland-like closing.

This brass choir arrangement set for an orchestral brass section of Coleridge-Taylor's Sea Drift captures the subtle textures of the composer’s chromatic harmonies inspired in his original vocal octet setting of a poem by T. B. Aldrich. Born of an African father, Coleridge-Taylor was an early 20th century English composer and conductor who was an influential advocate for Black composers. One of Coleridge-Taylor's rare A Cappella compositions for vocal SATB double choir here arranged for large brass ensemble, Sea Drift is infused with descriptive tone-color painting highlighting the tragic story of the merchant sailor who perishes in a stormy sea to the despair of his lover onshore. The arrangement is scored for an orchestral brass section of three B-flat trumpets with alternate C trumpet parts, four horns , three trombones and tuba. Bella Ciao (Goodbye Beautiful) is an Italian protest folk song from the late 19th century, originally sung by the seasonal female rice paddy workers in Northern Italy in protest to the harsh working conditions. The song was modified and adopted as an anthem of the Italian resistance movement by the partisans who opposed the Nazi occupiers between 1943 and 1945. Versions of Bella Ciao continue to be sung worldwide as hymns of freedom and resistance. Written during the Covid -19 Pandemic, Variations on “Bella Ciao’ was inspired by the scenes of music- making by Italian musicians during the darkest days of the pandemic. From rooftops, balconies and deserted piazzas, people continued to express themselves in testaments to the human spirit. Probably the accomplishment for which he’s most remembered today is his composing of There’ll Be Some Changes Made, published in 1921. Billy Higgins, popular stage comedian, wrote the lyrics, and Ethel Waters, then just 24, recorded the song on the Black Swan label. The disc quickly achieved hit status, and the song has remained popular across multiple musical platform styles ever since. This arrangement is a happy, fun piece and includes some of the great (and familiar) Vaudeville-style ornaments and phrases. It’s a real toe-tapper. For the most part this arrangement is up-tempo, about 140 bpm. It does slow to 92 at the first iteration of the verse and again for the final ¬6 measures of the piece. Time signature is 4/4 except for measure 89, which is 6/4. The key is B-flat throughout, and the melody weaves among all instruments. Trumpet 1 plays B5 (B-flat trumpet’s high C) briefly at measures 4 and 35 and for two measures at the very end of the piece. Tuba plays G3 briefly several times in measures 90-93. Other than that, there are no exceptionally out-of-normal-range notes. Trumpets 1 and 2 may wish to double-tongue at measure 64. Published by Sweetwater Brass Press (A0.808684). Irving Berlin’s composition Alexander’s Ragtime Band was not only his first hit, it was also one of the most popular songs ever. It first gained widespread recognition when Emma Carus sang it in Chicago in 1911, and then it really took off when Al Jolson performed it in New York. It’s no wonder the popularity of Alexander’s has been so long-lived. Both words and music are absolutely bouncy and upbeat. The lyrics proclaim the Ragtime Band to be the best . . . in the land and invite the listener to come on and hear the group, even to meet its leader! The tune is energetic and lively, a salute to the toe-tapping Dixieland style that even then was developing in New Orleans.  This arrangement takes the natural exuberance of the melody and raises it a couple of notches. Wide open and sprightly, it features the trombone, but also gives each of the other parts a chance to shine, too. In addition to several iterations of the well-known chorus, it also includes the seldom-heard verse and even throws in a few true ragtime licks, quotes from Scott Joplin and Percy Wenrich. The tempo is a bouncy, cut-time 76, with some fairly tricky rhythms and one ritardando near the middle. Trumpet 1 plays a couple of notes above its staff, one A and one B. Trombone plays F above its staff several times and one brief G. Tuba’s lowest note is F below the staff. This arrangement was completed in 2018, and performance time runs about 4 minutes, 33 seconds. Presented here is a large Canzona published around 1597 for 15 brass in 3 choirs. A variety of substitute parts are also included to handle trombone parts with Bb trumpets and F Horns. One of Gabrieli’s more beautiful and triumphant works, this piece starts out with a somber harmonic display that soon turns major alternating between the choirs. A brief chanson-like dance interlude then leads to the triumphant finale. A great work that displays the full harmonic range of the brass with many of Gabrieli’s typical antiphonal effects.
