Old Glory is a nickname for the flag of the United States. The original Old Glory was a flag owned by the 19th-century American sea captain William Driver (March 17, 1803 – March 3, 1886), who flew the flag during his career at sea and later brought it to Nashville, Tennessee, where he settled.That of course, is the historic description. (From Wikipedia) Part of a larger work entitled, An American Salutation this piece was written in commemoration of the flag and for the people it represents.Patriotic in its sound, Old Glory would be suggested for any historic American holiday or function, i.e., Memorial Day, Veteran's Day, etc and gives one a proud feeling when played. Also makes a nice addition to any brass quintet program.

Monteverdi - The Fourth Book of Madrigals 1603In this book, Monteverdi continues to develop the techniques and writing practices that would eventually form the first opera and his Stile Nuovo. The polyphony becomes more complex and more tonal and the interdependence of the parts more striking. He is experimenting with more dissonance but also moves towards more tonal writing. Although a far cry from the I IV V and minor of the modern pop song, he is nonetheless helping to push forward a more diatonic type of harmony with a more dramatic tonal and harmonic structure that goes much more towards true word painting than his previous books. It was allegedly written for a 5-shilling bet in Stalybridge on January 30, 1912 and performed the next night at the local music hall. Now commonly called It’s a Long Way to Tipperary, the original printed music calls it It’s a Long, Long Way to Tipperary. It became popular among soldiers in the First World War and is remembered as a song of World War I. Pack Up Your Troubles in Your Old Kit-Bag, and Smile, Smile, Smile is the full name of the World War I marching song, published in 1915 in London. It was written by Welsh songwriters, George Henry Powell under the pseudonym of George Asaf, and set to music by his brother Felix Powell. It was featured in the American show Her Soldier Boy, which opened in December 1916. This skillful arrangement by Jari Villanueva captures the flavor of the original tunes and would be a great selection commemorating the 100th anniversary of World War I. The arrangement includes the verses of the tunes and the British bugle call Fall In. This clever arrangement culminates in a rousing section that superimposes both tunes. Included is a Full Score and parts for Brass Ensemble. Also included are substitute parts for Eb Horns and Treble Clef Baritone Horn A retired member of the United States Air Force Band where he served on the Music Production staff (as well as a trumpeter and bugler) and a student of Bill Holcombe, Jari Villanueva continues writing for different ensembles. The basis of this piece was centered around the complex emotions of cats in which we observe in our every day lives. With regards to this piece especially, there were three cats that I based this composition on, and their names are Storm, Zany and Tremor. Each miniature is a representation of a certain type of emotion that each of these cats is known for expressing. The first movement is for my favorite cat, Storm, and is titled, “Precious Storm.†Going back to my earliest memories of writing songs, I re-translated an old tune that I used to sing into a brass quintet miniature and dedicated to him, for he is the best cat. The second miniature is titled, “Mouse on a String,†and is supposed to portray the same energy that one would see from a cat in chase of a toy mouse being constantly propelled around the air from one end of a string, which is one of Storm’s favorite things to do. The third movement is called “Zany the Scaredy-Cat,†which is exactly the type of cat that Zany is. Always fearful and skittish, Zany sneaks around the house to avoid human contact at all costs. The fourth movement is titled “You Stuck, Zany?†This is named after a short video clip in which Zany finds herself stuck in the fireplace and struggling to get out. Once she frees herself, she runs away as fast as she can. The fifth movement is called “Passive-Aggressive Tremor†for the final cat, Tremor. Tremor likes to instigate conflicts with the other cats, but once the tension arises, he backs away, which can also be heard within the intense build ups and anti-climatic drops within the music as well. Finally, the sixth movement is called, “King Tremor,†in which is the boldest sounding of all the pieces, for when it does come to conflict, it is usually Tremor who comes out on top, outsmarting the other two cats.

Hello to all who happen to stumble onto this piece! My name is Anthony Prudent, and I am a student at the Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School in New York City. This piece is an original composition that was written for the Brass Ensemble in the school. The world premiere of the song occurred on Tuesday, January the 7th. As such, I am distributing this work so that any ensemble, for school or otherwise, can perform it! The piece is roughly three and a half minutes long. However, it can be found challenging at times. Nevertheless, it is a fun piece to perform anywhere and is an excellent form of repertoire for brass players looking for something to engage with their performing groups.

This piece is meant to be a fun exercise for the imagination: what happens during the maiden voyage to the stars? This piece is inspired by two river adventures from the days when I aspired to be a professional trumpet player. The first adventure was a kayaking trip on the Charles River in Boston, MA and the second was a tubing trip on the Huron River in Ann Arbor, MI. While lazily floating down these rivers with my friends, I imagined us with our instruments, laughing and playing. It is a joyful image that sticks with me to this day, however, I invite you to imagine your own fantasy while listening to this piece! A slightly different version of this piece premiered on May 25th, 2013 at the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Herndon, VA. This was one of two original compositions that I performed for my senior recital in high school.
