The maiden stood by the mountain slope; the mountain reflected her face, and the maiden spoke to her reflection: Truly, my face, O you my worry, if, my white face, I knew that someday an old man would kiss you, then I would go to the green mountain, pick all the wormwood in the mountains, press the bitter water out of the wormwood, and wash you, O my face, with that water, so that you would be bitter when the old man kissed you! Published by Sweetwater Brass Press (A0.808682).     After You’ve Gone, composed in 1918 by Turner Layton (melody) and Henry Creamer (lyrics), was a hit from the beginning. Al Jolson introduced it to live audiences, Marion Harris’ record went to #1 in early 1919, and since then dozens of artists have recorded it . . . and many are still doing so. The words are rather sad-she’s leaving and he’s trying to get her to stay-but played up tempo, the melody is bouncy and fun. That sad-versus-happy dichotomy is incorporated in this arrangement. It begins with a bright, bouncy introduction and first-time-through of the chorus, then slows so the Horn in F can play a melancholic and somewhat schmaltzy rendition of the verse. The Tuba provides a transition back to the upbeat chorus, and we are again off to the races. Layton’s melody slips and slides from one instrument to the next (with the Tuba getting an entire iteration all to itself!), until the pace again slows for a 4-bar reminder of the sentimental verse, which then gives way to a rousing Dixieland-like closing.

It begins with Trumpet 1 playing the iconic opening guitar lick, then it moves into a reasonably faithful version of the song. At the third verse there is a deep reharmonization of the melody, then it moves into the end vamp with trumpet 1 and trombone soloing together. Very cool- and people will recognize it. Medium level of difficulty (a couple high notes in the trombone and french horn).

It occurs near the end of Rodgers and Hart's 1936 Broadway musical comedy On Your Toes. Slaughter is the story of a hoofer who falls in love with a dance hall girl who is then shot and killed by her jealous boyfriend. The hoofer then shoots the boyfriend. The ballet is integrated into the plot of the musical by the device of having two gangsters watching it from box seats in the theatre in which it is staged. They have orders to shoot the leading dancer (played by Ray Bolger in the original production). The dancer, who has been warned just in time, evades them by suddenly dancing at full speed even after the ballet actually ends, and finally two police officers enter and arrest the gangsters. At two o'clock on Saturday 10th, the midday calm is shattered by the appearance of German troops led by Major Diekmann at the southeastern entrance to the village. Soon after, all seven hundred villagers are assembled on the fairground. Women and children are herded and locked into the church, whereas men are marched in groups to nearby barns and crammed inside. While the village is being plundered, all men are machine-gunned by soldiers, and then the barns are set alight. A smoke bomb sets the church on fire too, and women and children trying to escape through the windows are mowed down as they make it outside. Marguerite is wounded on her way out, but she manages to hide in the bushes and stays there overnight until she is finally rescued the next afternoon. Published by Sweetwater Brass Press (A0.808684). Irving Berlin’s composition Alexander’s Ragtime Band was not only his first hit, it was also one of the most popular songs ever. It first gained widespread recognition when Emma Carus sang it in Chicago in 1911, and then it really took off when Al Jolson performed it in New York. It’s no wonder the popularity of Alexander’s has been so long-lived. Both words and music are absolutely bouncy and upbeat. The lyrics proclaim the Ragtime Band to be the best . . . in the land and invite the listener to come on and hear the group, even to meet its leader! The tune is energetic and lively, a salute to the toe-tapping Dixieland style that even then was developing in New Orleans.  This arrangement takes the natural exuberance of the melody and raises it a couple of notches. Wide open and sprightly, it features the trombone, but also gives each of the other parts a chance to shine, too. In addition to several iterations of the well-known chorus, it also includes the seldom-heard verse and even throws in a few true ragtime licks, quotes from Scott Joplin and Percy Wenrich. The tempo is a bouncy, cut-time 76, with some fairly tricky rhythms and one ritardando near the middle. Trumpet 1 plays a couple of notes above its staff, one A and one B. Trombone plays F above its staff several times and one brief G. Tuba’s lowest note is F below the staff. This arrangement was completed in 2018, and performance time runs about 4 minutes, 33 seconds. For centuries musicologists believed it was an original composition as it was a part of the manuscript notebook compiled by Bach and his wife Anna Magdalena Bach, in 1725.Petzold was born in Konigstein, Germany, in 1677 and little is known about his exact birth date. Relatively few pieces ofhis have survived the centuries, but the inclusion of his two minuets in the Anna Magdalena Notebook, remain the most famous of these.The theme to the Minuet in G was used in 1966 by the American pop group The Toys, in their song 'A Lover's Concerto'.In this arrangement I have syncopated the theme and accompanying parts to create a jazz feel. From letter A the theme appears in the cornet and euphonium lines and then at letter B the theme is transferred to the horn section. Whilst the theme is in the horn section there is a counter riff in the baritones and trombones, and a simple jazz syncopation in the cornets. At C the key changes to the sub-dominant key of C and the back row cornets get the tune in a simple but syncopated form whilst a flowing counter melody continues in the lower instruments. Then at D the euphoniums, baritones and basses have their chance and the syncopation appears in the horns and interjections in the cornets. After the D.S the the piece goes to the Coda, which hasthe tune split between each of the sections of the band with a fortissimo climax.

They are plentiful in Somerset in the West Country of England Though similar in appearance to a gargoyle, a hunky punk is purely decorative and has no other functional purpose whatsoever!! Unlike the gargoyle, which serves to drain water off the roof through its mouth.The theory behind hunky punks and grotesques in general, was that churches were designed to reflect the balance between good and evil, reminding worshippers of the narrow path leading through life. As a result, for every saint or animal that was intended to signify purity and ‘goodness’, there was also an ugly creature to signify evil and ‘badness’. Scored for 2 Trumpets in B flat, Horn in F, 2 Trombones and Tuba. This piece is in concert C minor and begins with a medieval type of fanfare which occurs throughout. What follows is a haunting theme with lots of flattened 5ths and several discords to represent the uncomfortable nature of this statue. The staccato and accent direction in most of the piece gives the impression of walking on eggshells not knowing what lies around the corner! Then a brief legato section of the fanfare appears to provide a calmer atmosphere before eventually returning to the main theme and big ending. Set at Advanced intermediate level although an intermediate player maybe fine with it. However, the youtube link has the full score for you to assess suitability. It is around 4 mins 30 in length and would be a great addition to a repertoire.Price is for the full score and parts.

The title Inventions' has a double meaning. The first meaning is that each movement represents a significant invention. The second meaning is each movement has sections reminiscent of a musical invention, a short contrapuntal composition that is usually based on a single theme. Movement 1 – The Wheel – This movement is a perpetual motion in triple meter. Movement II – The Metronome - The music in this movement represents a mechanical, wind-up metronome. Movement III – The Periscope - The movement is in an ABA'B' form. The A section, with its dark colors and slow 6/8 represents a submarine, lurking under water. The B section begins with ominous sounds that accompany the rising of the periscope and the scanning of the horizon for destroyers and for prey. Movement IV – Morse Code – The form of this movement is ABA’B’AB’’A’Coda. The A section rhythmically spells out the words brass trio in Morse code, first homophonically and then contrapuntally. The B sections spell out the names of the instruments playing the musical line in Morse code. The Coda spells out the words the end in Morse code. Movement V – The Airplane - This movement begins with a celebratory section in 7/8 and 6/8 representing the success of the Wright Brothers. After this festive beginning, a sustained melody represents the first flight that lasted 12 seconds with Orville at the controls. This melody also lasts 12 seconds. Accompanying the sustained melody is the steady staccato eighth note rhythm representing the sound of the motor. After a short celebratory interlude, another sustained melody of flight occurs with Wilbur is at the controls. The staccato eighth note motor accompaniment changes into a flowing triplet figure during 59-second flight, the longest of 1903. The flight melody now lasts 59 seconds as well. After a soft landing of the flight melody, the celebration theme ends the movement in a festive and exciting manner.

A few years ago my wife and I were invited to attend a surprise 90th birthday party for the legendary brass band conductor James Scott. The party was held at Uppermill golf course in the heart of Saddleworth. Anyone familiar with the annual brass band festival that is the Whit Friday March contests will be familiar with the area and perhaps also with its somewhat damp climate. My wife and I decided that we would make a mini-break out of it and took our touring caravan to stay on a small farm site near Freisland (another Whit Friday venue). the weather was as predicted and it rained... and it rained... and then it rained some more to the extent that we had a family of ducks swimming around outside our caravan door. TV, and Internet connection in Saddleworth, in a caravan in the rain is virtually non-existent so we were well and truly stuck. We ventured out into nearby town of Oldham and eventually found a bookshop. Browsing through the music section I stumbled across a piano reduction of the show score to Mary Poppins. Contained in the score was a 32 bar, simple piano reduction of Step in Time... The rest, as they say, is history... This arrangement is not such a simple reduction. There are frequent changes of key, and time signatures throughout, but it has proven to be great fun to play and rehearse. Particularly with bands that are not the best 'sight readers'...

Chicago’s Root & Cady published it in April of that year, Christy’s Minstrels premiered it and it became enormously popular. The lyrics to Kingdom Coming, also known as The Year of Jubilo, were written as though slaves in the Confederacy were celebrating their upcoming freedom. However, the song was actually released eight months before President Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation. Interestingly, Kingdom Coming also gained popularity in the South. A Southern edition was published in August in 1864, and the song remained a favorite in the former Confederacy for some years. Kingdom Coming has been used as theme or background music in a number of film, television and radio settings. Almost certainly its most popular iteration in modern times was the Sauter-Finegan Orchestra’s 1952 recording under the title Doodletown Fifers. This arrangement is a show-off piece for each member of the quintet. It moves along at a brisk pace of about 108, begins in the key of C and changes to A-flat, then B-flat. The first time through the melody, all instruments perform ensemble. Each succeeding repetition features an instrumentalist, starting with tuba and working up to Trumpet 1. The piece ends with another ensemble version. There are no exceptionally out-of-normal-playing-range notes: Trumpets 1 and 2 both play their B-flat below the scale several times, and Trumpet 2 plays G below the scale; Horn in F also plays its G below the scale; Trombone’s range is G at the bottom of the scale to D above the scale; Tuba’s lowest note is A-flat below the scale. Trumpet 1 will probably triple tongue its repetition of the melody, and some triple tonguing may be called for near the end of the piece for Trumpets 1 and 2 and Trombone. This fast, fun and simple march teeters between major and minor tonality to give it a somewhat comedic effect. The melody moves from one instrument to the next giving every member of the ensemble a chance to shine. As the piece nears the climax of the fugue sounding section you will hear the broken record section as the material repeats several times and finally the music pauses. The music then restarts as it has gone way off track from the march you heard at the beginning and plays to the silly bombastic end.

First trumpet has the melody on verse one with a light sparce background that gets busier on the chorus. Trombone then takes over melody while trumpet 2 plays an echo -- taken over by trumpet 1 at the chorus. Up a half step modulation for another chorus with trumpet 1 on melody again to a rousing ending.
