From the Music of Black Composers Series is this arrangement of the third movement Humor from William Grant Still's Afro-American Symphony for a brass choir of 4 B-flat trumpets, 4 horns in F, 3 trombones, euphonium and tuba. Still's Afro-American Symphony was one of the most significant classical orchestra compositions of the early 1930s to incorporate African-American folk influences. Premiered by the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra at conductor Howard Hanson's notable American Music Festival, it brought the flavor of the Blues and folk music to the symphony. For Still the Blues was a distinct African-American musical contribution he incorporated into a symphonic work. As part of the early 20th Century Harlem Renaissance in New York City, the work was enthusiastically received across the USA and overseas. This brass choir arrangement of the third movement will enliven concerts with its colorful rhythms reminiscent of Gershwin and blues harmonies. Published by Jonathan Spencer (A0.940657). George Butterworth (1885-1916) was an English composer before he his untimely death during WW1. As a composer he showed real potential, but left behind only a few compositions - The Banks of Green Willow being one of them. Written in 1913 the composer described the work as an Idyll based on two folk songs - The Banks of Green Willow and Green Bushes. This arrrangement for brass ensemble remains as close to the original as possible, whilst making it achievable for brass musicians. A challenging arrangement of a super work by a composer killed surving his country. Arrranged in 2018, 100 years after the end of WW1.

The Ring of Brodgar (ORKNEY) is the finest known truly circular late Neolithic or early Bronze Age stone ring and a later expression of the spirit which gave rise to Maeshowe, Stenness and Skara Brae. This quartet was composed for the 'Emminence' brass quartet (Richard Marshall - Philip Cobb - Owen Farr - David Childs), and recorded on their CD 'Jewels'. The three movements have a strong 'Scottish' flavour, both in dance-like and folk-like melody. Duration is approx. 7 minutes.

We were in a room at Rice University where he teaches after a Texas Brass Quintet rehearsal. This was back when both Dave and I were in the band. I asked him and the hornist if they would stay after the rehearsal to read through my new trio. It was these Four Vignettes.When I finished, I KNEW it was mission accomplished because Dave’s face lit up. He had a smile of satisfaction not unlike a smile someone would have after a very satisfying meal.My compositions have been different since then. More like this Four Vignettes piece and less like the experimental stuff I was writing in the 90’s.

This is a brilliant arrangement of the first movement Longing of William Grant Still's Afro-American Symphony for a brass choir of four B-flat trumpets, four horns in F, three trombones, euphonium and tuba. William Grant Still's Afro-American Symphony was one of the most significant classical orchestra compositions of the early 1930s to incorporate African-American folk influences. Premiered by the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra in October 1931 at conductor Howard Hanson's notable American Music Festival, it brought the melancholy flavor of the Blues to the symphony. For William Grant Still the Blues was a distinct African-American musical contribution, separate from the spiritual and popular jazz, and he wanted to incorporate it into a symphonic work based on Western classical symphonic instrumentation and forms. As part of the early 20th Century Harlem Renaissance in New York City, this work was enthusiastically received across the USA and overseas.
