Published by Lyons Music Services (A0.767274). As part of my continuing project to transcribe Monteverdi's madrigals onto winds, here is the 6th book. In this book we see a much greater development towards dramatic representation. In a way, this book is divisible into two Scenes with a number of single items in between. The vocal lines are all much more complex and we can also see the beginnings of monodic writing appear in the semi-recit sections of some of the songs. Also clearly developing are delineations of the voices into soloists and chorus. Several songs in this book are almost akin to arias, with clear soloistic writing for the higher voices (Cantus/Tenor). The first four songs form a kind of introductory 'scena', which Monteverdi calls Lamento d'Arianna. A little later, there is a set of 6 songs which he grouped together under the title Sestina. Song number 5 sits between Lamento della Ninfa and Sestina as a stand-alone song. Zephyrs turn and bring good weather A zephyr is a kind of fickle wind that can bring clouds or sunshine. As with all things madrigalian, the lyrics are rife with double entendres. Monteverdi uses some very close dissonances to describe death and release.

No 11 is a stand-alone song describing a young man, Alceo, unwilling to leave his lover (Lydia) to go on a long journey. This is much more in the character of a solo song for the tenor, with interjections from the 'chorus'. As with all things madrigalian, the lyrics are rife with double entendres. Monteverdi uses some very close dissonances to describe death and release.

La Rejouissance (from Heroic Music) - Georg Philipp Telemann - Brass Choir - Intermediate - .Heroic Music (or Heldenmusik) is a suite of twelve short marches and processionals, written by Georg Philipp Telemann in 1728 and is associated with various attributes of Heroism such as Dignity, Bravery and Alertness. All twelve movements have now been transcribed and arranged by Regis Booksgar to be played by Trumpet Quintets or Brass Quinets. Some of them have also been arranged for Sextets, Septets, Octets, Nonets and Brass Choirs. Some also include a Timpani. They can be purchased individually, or, if you prefer, as a complete set of all twelve at a huge saving.Any of these selections would be a wonderful addition to any music library. They are perfectly suited to recitals and public peformances, can stand alone as short interludes and are generally well received by audiences. They are suitable for high school and college students but professional musicians would also enjoy playing these arrangements. These selections are some of the many arrangements from The Regis Bookshar Trumpet Ensemble's extensive music library which are being made available for the first time. In the past, these compositions have often been performed by a soloist playing on a Piccolo Trumpet, but these new arrangements are Bb Trumpet friendly as one player stated after playing through them, making them much easier for most high school students.This selection, La Rejouissance (from Heroic Music), is arranged for a Brass Choir, with parts for 3 Bb Trumpets, 1 French Horn, 1 Trombone, 1 Euphonium and 1 Tuba, and is associated with the heroic quality of Joy. There is also a version which includes a Timpani, if you would prefer. The parts may be doubled as needed. Included are a score and a complete set of parts (15 pages).Many of these selections are readily available for a wide variety of instrumental ensembles. Please take the time to look for other versions of this composition. You may find something else that may also suit your needs. I would also encourage you to search for other arrangements by Regis Bookshar, as well, as there are numerous selections in a variety of styles, also available for purchase. At the end of most of the episodes from the 1978 TV Series, The Incredible Hulk, the main character, David Banner, is shown leaving whatever town or city he was in, walking alone down the highway, sometimes hitch-hiking, as he has typically destroyed buildings, human lives, and relationships as his Hulk persona earlier in the episode and can no longer show his face in town. The music that accompanies this ending scene is the tragic and sad The Lonely Man. It is so stereotypically and overly dramatic, that it has become something of an internet meme, being featured on an episode of Family Guy as well as numerous Youtube videos. This setting for brass quintet stays faithful to the original version for solo piano by Joe Harnell and captures the mournful and sad atmosphere perfectly.

The Fifth book of madrigals starts to see much more development towards operatic style writing, with more songs being strung together to form scenas and with the addition of accompaniment on instruments. Some of these songs can be written by incorporating the accompaniment into the parts for those instruments which are resting, some will require more than a quintet. Certainly as we get into the next three books, reduction to a quintet will become increasingly more difficult, if not impossible. Ch'io t'ami speaks of a man whose lover won't leave him alone or allow him to sleep.

The tune is catchy and the interaction between the parts is clever, bouncy, and charming. This is a good encore or stand-alone piece as well. Some of the variations get tricky, but lay well for the instruments. Beethoven doing what he does best, but with only three parts! This flexible trio allows for part 1 to be played on horn, trumpet, or bass clef instrument, and part 2 for horn or BC.
