Published by Lyons Music Services (A0.767275). As part of my continuing project to transcribe Monteverdi's madrigals onto winds, here is the 6th book. In this book we see a much greater development towards dramatic representation. In a way, this book is divisible into two Scenes with a number of single items in between. The vocal lines are all much more complex and we can also see the beginnings of monodic writing appear in the semi-recit sections of some of the songs. Also clearly developing are delineations of the voices into soloists and chorus. Several songs in this book are almost akin to arias, with clear soloistic writing for the higher voices (Cantus/Tenor). The first four songs form a kind of introductory 'scena', which Monteverdi calls Lamento d'Arianna. A little later, there is a set of 6 songs which he grouped together under the title Sestina. Here, the song is describing One woman amongst the others, honest and beautiful. Now, there's flattery for you! There is a subtitle to this song Concertato nel clavicembalo - Conducted from the harpsichord. Obviously, this is not possible in this transcription. The continuo part has been incorporated into the rests of all of the parts, without swamping the leading voices. As with all things madrigalian, the lyrics are rife with double entendres. Monteverdi uses some very close dissonances to describe death and release.

The basis of this piece was centered around the complex emotions of cats in which we observe in our every day lives. With regards to this piece especially, there were three cats that I based this composition on, and their names are Storm, Zany and Tremor. Each miniature is a representation of a certain type of emotion that each of these cats is known for expressing. The first movement is for my favorite cat, Storm, and is titled, “Precious Storm.†Going back to my earliest memories of writing songs, I re-translated an old tune that I used to sing into a brass quintet miniature and dedicated to him, for he is the best cat. The second miniature is titled, “Mouse on a String,†and is supposed to portray the same energy that one would see from a cat in chase of a toy mouse being constantly propelled around the air from one end of a string, which is one of Storm’s favorite things to do. The third movement is called “Zany the Scaredy-Cat,†which is exactly the type of cat that Zany is. Always fearful and skittish, Zany sneaks around the house to avoid human contact at all costs. The fourth movement is titled “You Stuck, Zany?†This is named after a short video clip in which Zany finds herself stuck in the fireplace and struggling to get out. Once she frees herself, she runs away as fast as she can. The fifth movement is called “Passive-Aggressive Tremor†for the final cat, Tremor. Tremor likes to instigate conflicts with the other cats, but once the tension arises, he backs away, which can also be heard within the intense build ups and anti-climatic drops within the music as well. Finally, the sixth movement is called, “King Tremor,†in which is the boldest sounding of all the pieces, for when it does come to conflict, it is usually Tremor who comes out on top, outsmarting the other two cats.

My arrangements there are cheaper and most of the revenue will go to the arranger (me) instead of sheet music plus.This is great for high school, university students and professionals. It's not too hard, but beginners beware, it's a bit beyond basic entry level horn playing. There are not a lot of horn arrangements out there like this one. This arrangement helps fill a niche for small ensemble in that horn quartet music typically lacks repertoire in most contemporary and jazz genres.If you're reading this in the future, this was one of the most popular songs of the year 2020! This arrangement is my take on it for quartet, semi-faithful to the original song with a bit of a jazzy twist. Score, parts and cover arts included. I hope someone out there tries this arrangement and has fun!

This song, No 10 starts with the line Here Tirsi laughed and wriggled under the two(twin?) stars of the beautiful Clorinda I think you get the picture! We can see plenty of musical laughing and wriggling in the music with dotted rhythms and semiquaver runs. The top two voices are Clorinda (doing a fair amount of wriggling herself) while the bottom two take the part of Tirsi. There are places where all four voices give vent to an exclamation and where, presumably, the two lovers had to stop for breath! The original incorporates a very basic continuo part, which I have shared between the resting voices. As with all things madrigalian, the lyrics are rife with double entendres.

This piece is inspired by the following stanza from Paradise Lost: Whence and what art thou, execrable shape, That dar'st, though grim and terrible, advance Thy miscreated front athwart my way To yonder gates? Through them I mean to pass, That be assured, without leave asked of thee. Retire; or taste thy folly, and learn by proof, Hell-born, not to contend with spirits of Heaven. Here we see Lucifer, even after he has fallen so far, his wings bound by adamantine chains, still view himself with pride for being filled with the light of Heaven. He challenges Death, thinking himself superior to the foul (and more powerful) being. This piece explores the arrogance and emotions that I associate with the work as a whole, but particularly in Lucifer’s ego. The MP3 given here is just the render off of staffpad. Enjoy! Scored for 2 B flat Trumpets, Horn in F, 2 Trombones and Tuba, Weekend in Paris is a bright jazz waltz intended to convey the excitement and anticipation of a trip to Paris. The music is to bring to mind pleasure in sightseeing, wandering around cafe's, seeing children at play, people dancing and laughing and families gathering in a happy relaxed atmosphere in the glorious sunshine.The piece is in concert F major establishing the bright swingy rhythm, this then flows into the second section which is more lyrical and legato and is in E flat major. A short bridge section follows keeping the motif's heard in the first section but exploring the lower registers and remains largely legato. The first two sections are then heard again before a modulation takes place to give the piece a final lift before the end. The piece concludes quietly with a snippet of the opening motif.I have set it to intermediate level but the whole score is on the youtube link for you to assess suitability.The music would be a great addition to any repertoire as a happy piece, programmatic with a world/travelling theme in mind.Full score 16 pages-parts 4 pages each. 4 mins 15 in length.Price is for score and all parts.NB Versions for Flute choir (4 C flutes, Alto and Bass Flute) and Flute Ensemble of 6 C Flutes are also available as is a Clarinet Choir version.

Published by Woodrow Edition (A0.999423). Carlo Gesualdo, Prince of Venosa, Musician and Murderer! That’s not a news headline (though it would be quite a good one) but the title of a book by composer Peter Warlock which I read avidly after first encountering the Italian composer in a lecture at the University of Liverpool in the 1980s. We were studying the Italian madrigal, which was not really my thing until our lecturer threw Moro Lasso into the mix. Its opening chords seemed so incongruous – unlike anything we had heard – and are as striking today as they must have been in 1611 when first published in Gesualdo’s 6th Book of Madrigals.More or less immediately after that lecture I arranged the piece for the Seras Brass Quintet which I had helped form. In those days the brass quintet repertoire was limited, and certainly didn’t include anything by Gesualdo!The arrangement really benefits from a church-like acoustic where you can make the most of the dramatic built-in silences. The tuba part lies quite high and is very playable on a trombone if need be. Even to modern ears there are some strange sounds and I trust that all the ‘wrong’ notes are Gesualdo’s rather than mine – do let me know if you think otherwise!

This is a brilliant arrangement of the first movement Longing of William Grant Still's Afro-American Symphony for a brass choir of four B-flat trumpets, four horns in F, three trombones, euphonium and tuba. William Grant Still's Afro-American Symphony was one of the most significant classical orchestra compositions of the early 1930s to incorporate African-American folk influences. Premiered by the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra in October 1931 at conductor Howard Hanson's notable American Music Festival, it brought the melancholy flavor of the Blues to the symphony. For William Grant Still the Blues was a distinct African-American musical contribution, separate from the spiritual and popular jazz, and he wanted to incorporate it into a symphonic work based on Western classical symphonic instrumentation and forms. As part of the early 20th Century Harlem Renaissance in New York City, this work was enthusiastically received across the USA and overseas. Published by Sweetwater Brass Press (A0.808698). Brandon Thomas’ three-act farce, Charley’s Aunt, opened in London in 1892 and was a huge success. It has since been performed and adapted many times. One such adaptation was Where’s Charley? a 1948 Broadway version with music and lyrics by Frank Loesser. Ray Bolger played the starring role as Charley, and its most memorable number was the second act’s Once In Love With Amy. Every night Bolger would perform the number, then turn to the audience and invite them to sing along with him. They loved it, and Bolger would continue to perform it as his signature act for years even after the play closed. The rhythmic and melodic nature of Once In Love With Amy seems to lend itself to performance by a brass group. And that’s what inspired this arrangement. All play the eight-measure introduction, while the verse-I caught you, sir, having a look at her as she went strolling by-features Trumpets, Horn and Trombone playing melody while tuba provides tempo and pulse. Then comes the familiar chorus, Once in love with Amy, always in love with Amy. The first time through, Tuba plays melody with the other instruments providing accompaniment. On the second time through, for the first half, Trombone and Tuba play an intricate counterpoint while Trumpets and Horn do a rather smooth swing version of the melody; for the second half, Trombone and Tuba take the melody and Trumpets provide the counterpoint. Then comes the surprise ending in which all three participate. Most players will have little trouble. The arrangement consists of 77 measures in 4/4 time. There are several tempo changes; the fastest is quarter note equals 108. Key signature is G, changing to F at measure 44. All notes for should be within normal playing range. Sweetwater Brass Press also offers a similar version of Once In Love With Amy arranged for tuba trio. This arrangement was completed in 2020, and performance time runs about 2 minutes, 58 seconds. This book has posed some issues as it is such complex music it is almost impossible to cut it down to 5 parts while maintaining its integrity. As a result, some songs will be in 6 or more parts. Vorrei baciarti has fairly simple harmonies, so I was able to keep it to 5 parts. Vorrei baciarti is a duet for two contraltos, taken by parts 2 and 3 in this setting. The title translate as I want to kiss you, so typifies the kind of love songs that Monteverdi was writing. The poet is singing these words to his lover Phyllis, so we can probably assume that he is Amyntas. In the poem he is deciding where to plant his first kiss. The seventh book is quite a change from the earlier ones. Monteverdi seems to be concentrating on developing solos and duets, trios and small accompanied ensembles. The accompaniments are often written out with more than just long note chords. The intricate instrumental parts are more than just filling in the harmony (hence the difficulty in paring them down.) Once again, these songs are exquisitely crafted and travel well onto brass.
