In the Frank Wright days of orchestral transcriptions certain things already had to be in place with the work itself, key or transpose-ability, tesssitura, time length, and over all technical difficulty. All these had to be weighed out before pen hit paper. Out of the many overtures we know transcribed for brass band we know they work and are playable, hard in the days, but easier now.

Published by Kevin P Holdgate (A0.862274). This is an 'abridged' arrangement of the famous overture to Rossini's opera 'The Barber of Saville' but retains all of the character of the original. I originally completed this arrangement as part of an entertainment contest tracing the development of brass band arrangements and the music played by brass bands through the years. The original brass band arrangement of this work was far too long to sensibly fit into an entertainment program so I went back to the original Rossini score and did my own; very much to suit the brass band that I was conducting. This effectively means that it can be played by all grades of band and makes a great concert opener that is not overly long.

The All-Night Vigil (Vespers) Op. 37 is an a cappella choral work first performed in 1915. It's fifteen movements consist of Russian Orthodox Church texts. Rachmaninoff had stopped attending church, but he felt compelled to write some of his own chants in the style of the Church, calling them "conscious counterfeits".
The work is enormous, of over one hour of the most beautiful choral writing with Rachmaninoff's patented rich harmonies, melody and polyphony.
Paul Erion has arranged this work for moderately advanced 10-part Brass Ensemble of: 4 Trumpets in C, 2 Horns, 3 Trombones & Tuba.

In this collection of songs, Monteverdi, for the first time, starts to bring small groups of songs (2 or 3) to form a 'Scena - a collection with similar words or on a similar theme or by the same poet and keeping them as a little group within the book of madrigals. The 8th song, Vattene pur crudel is a song about the a man losing his lover, albeit temporarily, as he refuses to follow her.As with all of Monteverdi's vocal music, it translates really well onto instruments. The individual madrigals are available separately. In this book we see a much greater development towards dramatic representation. In a way, this book is divisible into two Scenes with a number of single items in between. The vocal lines are all much more complex and we can also see the beginnings of monodic writing appear in the semi-recit sections of some of the songs. Also clearly developing are delineations of the voices into soloists and chorus. Several songs in this book are almost akin to arias, with clear soloistic writing for the higher voices (Cantus/Tenor). The first four songs form a kind of introductory 'scena', which Monteverdi calls Lamento d'Arianna. A little later, there is a set of 6 songs which he grouped together under the title Sestina. This song, No 10 starts with the line Here Tirsi laughed and wriggled under the two(twin?) stars of the beautiful Clorinda I think you get the picture! We can see plenty of musical laughing and wriggling in the music with dotted rhythms and semiquaver runs. The top two voices are Clorinda (doing a fair amount of wriggling herself) while the bottom two take the part of Tirsi. There are places where all four voices give vent to an exclamation and where, presumably, the two lovers had to stop for breath! The original incorporates a very basic continuo part, which I have shared between the resting voices. As with all things madrigalian, the lyrics are rife with double entendres.

The young man is pleading with his lover to tell him that she wants him and he is referred to as Theseus in order to fit in with the common mythology of the time. Just as the women have Arianna, Daphne and Clorinda, so the men have Theseus, Clovis and various other mythological fantasies. As with all things madrigalian, the lyrics are rife with double entendres.

First of all, it was always my thinking that through small ensembles teaching balance, blend, articulations and dynamics can possibly be more effective in a small ensemble and eventually evolve from this setting into the overall concert band setting. Secondly, to teach form of the musical composition, in this case, an early version of the fugue. Last of all, to expose students as a pertinent example of where and when the music was composed and to what order of circumstances it was created.
