The Ricercar a 6 is a 6-voice fugue considered to be the highlight of the entire work and described as possibly the greatest piano composition in musical history. Mr. Sauer has brilliantly scored Bach’s fugue for 14-piece Brass ensemble the texture of which is quite transparent until the ending, which goes out in a blaze of glory. Instrumentation: 4 Trumpets in C, 4 Horns, 4 Trombones, 2 Tubas (optional single tuba part also included). The work is about 8 minutes in length and is suitable for advanced performers.

The horn part takes the tenor voice solo where appropriate, singing over the rest of the ensemble. All players have occasional rest-bites and plenty of opportunity to shine, with the general range and technical demands for a convincing performance aimed at intermediate to advanced players (ABRSM grade 5 and upwards). This popular baroque classic would be a perfect addition to concerts, recitals and wedding programmes, for both audiences and performers alike. The PDF is 23 pages in length (portrait A4) and includes a full score and parts for flexible brass quartet (2 Cornets/Trumpets, Tenor Horn/F Horn/Baritone/Trombone and Euphonium/Bass Trombone). Antonio Vivaldi's Concerto for Two Trumpets in C with Brass Ensemble and Timpani is a rarity for the Baroque era when solos for brass instruments were almost non-existent. The valveless nascent Trumpets were very difficult to play. But as with Bach, there must have been a few brave souls who mastered the instrument and inspired the composer to write his inspired work.As with most of Vivaldi's concertos, this one begins with a quick and sparkling movement to catch the attention of the audience and to showcase the bright tones of the solo trumpets. This is followed by a contrasting brief and languid second movement. The final movement is back to brilliant mode with quick energy and intricate passages for the soloists. (Encylopedia Britannica).Niels-Ole Bo Johansen has created a very unique arrangement for the two solo Trumpets with Brass Ensemble and Timpani...unique in that the accompaniment instruments are almost all conical (except for the trombones who can blend nicely into that pool of round sounds). This gives the listener a sharp contrast between the brilliance of the soloists and the plush sound of the accompaniment.The 6 1/2 minute work is appropriate for advanced performers. The instrumentation is for: 2 solo Trumpets in A, 2 Cornets in B-flat, Flugelhorn, 2 Horns in F, 3 Trombones, Euphonium, 2 Tubas, and Timpani.

From there, the piece turns into an uplifting song of hope for the future, ending with a triumphant clarino trumpet line to bring the piece into a joyous celebration.
