The All-Night Vigil (Vespers) Op. 37 is an a cappella choral work first performed in 1915. It's fifteen movements consist of Russian Orthodox Church texts. Rachmaninoff had stopped attending church, but he felt compelled to write some of his own chants in the style of the Church, calling them "conscious counterfeits".
The work is enormous, of over one hour of the most beautiful choral writing with Rachmaninoff's patented rich harmonies, melody and polyphony.
Paul Erion has arranged this work for moderately advanced 10-part Brass Ensemble of: 4 Trumpets in C, 2 Horns, 3 Trombones & Tuba.

The final movement features a remarkable triple fugue, which was the motivation for this trio arrangement.This arrangement contains the entire 4th movement distilled to just three players. It was originally created for cello trio, and includes bowings and fingerings for cello. It also works as a viola trio, a bassoon trio, a clarinet trio, and a French Horn trio. Triad by Jim Pugh is a work in a contemporary style for Brass Trio (Trumpet, Horn and Trombone) commissioned in 1996 by the Areopagitica Brass Trio. The work for advanced performers is 5 minutes in length and has five slow sections and three fast sections alternating throughout. Pugh uses dissonance and unison as a way of adding and releasing tension throughout the work. Pugh writes that this work is his most personal composition and deals with his search as an adopted child for his birth mother. The work begins in-utero and through all of the complexities of relationships between the child and others in his life. Parts are supplied for C & B-flat Trumpet, Horn and Trombone. This 5-minute work is written for very advanced performers.

Published by Grant Horsley (A0.1433697). A Hunky punk is a grotesque carving on the side of a building, typically found on Mid/ Late medieval churches in the UK. They are plentiful in Somerset in the West Country of England Though similar in appearance to a gargoyle, a hunky punk is purely decorative and has no other functional purpose whatsoever!! Unlike the gargoyle, which serves to drain water off the roof through its mouth.The theory behind hunky punks and grotesques in general, was that churches were designed to reflect the balance between good and evil, reminding worshippers of the narrow path leading through life. As a result, for every saint or animal that was intended to signify purity and ‘goodness’, there was also an ugly creature to signify evil and ‘badness’. Scored for 2 Trumpets in B flat, Horn in F, 2 Trombones and Tuba. This piece is in concert C minor and begins with a medieval type of fanfare which occurs throughout. What follows is a haunting theme with lots of flattened 5ths and several discords to represent the uncomfortable nature of this statue. The staccato and accent direction in most of the piece gives the impression of walking on eggshells not knowing what lies around the corner! Then a brief legato section of the fanfare appears to provide a calmer atmosphere before eventually returning to the main theme and big ending. Set at Advanced intermediate level although an intermediate player maybe fine with it. However, the youtube link has the full score for you to assess suitability. It is around 4 mins 30 in length and would be a great addition to a repertoire.Price is for the full score and parts.

Holst's 7-movement Suite, The Planets was written between 1914-16 and its first version was scored for two pianos except for the Neptune movement, which was written for organ alone. The music is the first ever composed with a fade-away ending using a womens' chorus. Later, Holst completed his orchestration of the 7-movement Suite, which has become one of the most popular works in the repertoire. Mr. Sauer has brilliantly scored this movement of about nine minutes in length for 14-part brass ensemble with Timpani and Glockenspiel. This concludes his arranging of the complete suite for Large Brass Ensemble. The entire 7-movement Suite is also available for sale as a complete set on our website. Instrumentation is for: 4 Trumpets in C 4 Horns in F 3 Trombones Euphonium, Tuba Timpani and Glockenspiel This music is appropriate for advanced performers.
