Sweetwater Brass Press #4331333. Published by Sweetwater Brass Press (A0.808689). William Benton Overstreet did it all-played piano, wrote songs, led bands. Probably the accomplishment for which he’s most remembered today is his composing of There’ll Be Some Changes Made, published in 1921. Billy Higgins, popular stage comedian, wrote the lyrics, and Ethel Waters, then just 24, recorded the song on the Black Swan label. The disc quickly achieved hit status, and the song has remained popular across multiple musical platform styles ever since. This arrangement is a happy, fun piece and includes some of the great (and familiar) Vaudeville-style ornaments and phrases. It’s a real toe-tapper. For the most part this arrangement is up-tempo, about 140 bpm. It does slow to 92 at the first iteration of the verse and again for the final ¬6 measures of the piece. Time signature is 4/4 except for measure 89, which is 6/4. The key is B-flat throughout, and the melody weaves among all instruments. Trumpet 1 plays B5 (B-flat trumpet’s high C) briefly at measures 4 and 35 and for two measures at the very end of the piece. Tuba plays G3 briefly several times in measures 90-93. Other than that, there are no exceptionally out-of-normal-range notes. Trumpets 1 and 2 may wish to double-tongue at measure 64. This arrangement was completed in 2019, and performance time runs about 3 minutes, 30 seconds. The arranger, Les Smith, would be very interested in your comments; contact him at lessmith@ufl.edu. In some cases, octave displacements or key changes are necessary to accommodate the range of these instruments, but these changes do not change the character of Bach’s music. Original Keys are noted when changed. Tempi are suggested from an organ transcription, and should be taken as a reference. These should be played at tempi that make sense for the brass trio. This transcription is for the Central Alberta Chamber Players. Substitute parts for Bb trumpet in place of C Trumpet, and Bb and C trumpet in place of Horn in F.

This is a brand new work for brass quartet, using brass band instrumentation: Cornet (doubling Flugelhorn), Tenor Horn, Baritone Horn and Euphonium.It was written as a submission for a new brass quartet (A4 Brass Quartet) comprising musicians from the RNCM, but didn't get selected. Each movement is based on the ensemble's name and contains a pun on A4. Each movement also has fourths involved in it somewhere.The first movement is called Aforethought (because it contains my initial ideas) and it uses a mixture of tonal and quartal harmonies. Melodies and harmony are based around fourths and fifths. It requires all players to be able to flutter-tongue. After the opening fanfare, there is a march-like melody on the cornet, accompanied by the rest of the ensemble. This is followed by a contrasting tune using intervals of a fourth. These ideas are developed over several keys until the first march-like melody returns. The fanfare idea closes the movement.The second movement is called Aforementioned. It takes its ideas from the first movement, but gives them a bluesy style. The cornet player changes to the flugelhorn for this movement which has a beautiful languid melody. The horn shares some of the glory towards the end.The third and final movement is called Aphorhythm (A4 rhythm) and is in 7/8 time. The jerky little melody plays with the pulse of the 7/8 and smoothly morphs into a steadier 'middle 8' section before reprising the opening music.Altogether, this is an enjoyable and exciting piece for brass quartet..

The title Inventions' has a double meaning. The first meaning is that each movement represents a significant invention. The second meaning is each movement has sections reminiscent of a musical invention, a short contrapuntal composition that is usually based on a single theme. Movement 1 – The Wheel – This movement is a perpetual motion in triple meter. Movement II – The Metronome - The music in this movement represents a mechanical, wind-up metronome. Movement III – The Periscope - The movement is in an ABA'B' form. The A section, with its dark colors and slow 6/8 represents a submarine, lurking under water. The B section begins with ominous sounds that accompany the rising of the periscope and the scanning of the horizon for destroyers and for prey. Movement IV – Morse Code – The form of this movement is ABA’B’AB’’A’Coda. The A section rhythmically spells out the words brass trio in Morse code, first homophonically and then contrapuntally. The B sections spell out the names of the instruments playing the musical line in Morse code. The Coda spells out the words the end in Morse code. Movement V – The Airplane - This movement begins with a celebratory section in 7/8 and 6/8 representing the success of the Wright Brothers. After this festive beginning, a sustained melody represents the first flight that lasted 12 seconds with Orville at the controls. This melody also lasts 12 seconds. Accompanying the sustained melody is the steady staccato eighth note rhythm representing the sound of the motor. After a short celebratory interlude, another sustained melody of flight occurs with Wilbur is at the controls. The staccato eighth note motor accompaniment changes into a flowing triplet figure during 59-second flight, the longest of 1903. The flight melody now lasts 59 seconds as well. After a soft landing of the flight melody, the celebration theme ends the movement in a festive and exciting manner.

A few years ago my wife and I were invited to attend a surprise 90th birthday party for the legendary brass band conductor James Scott. The party was held at Uppermill golf course in the heart of Saddleworth. Anyone familiar with the annual brass band festival that is the Whit Friday March contests will be familiar with the area and perhaps also with its somewhat damp climate. My wife and I decided that we would make a mini-break out of it and took our touring caravan to stay on a small farm site near Freisland (another Whit Friday venue). the weather was as predicted and it rained... and it rained... and then it rained some more to the extent that we had a family of ducks swimming around outside our caravan door. TV, and Internet connection in Saddleworth, in a caravan in the rain is virtually non-existent so we were well and truly stuck. We ventured out into nearby town of Oldham and eventually found a bookshop. Browsing through the music section I stumbled across a piano reduction of the show score to Mary Poppins. Contained in the score was a 32 bar, simple piano reduction of Step in Time... The rest, as they say, is history... This arrangement is not such a simple reduction. There are frequent changes of key, and time signatures throughout, but it has proven to be great fun to play and rehearse. Particularly with bands that are not the best 'sight readers'...

Chicago’s Root & Cady published it in April of that year, Christy’s Minstrels premiered it and it became enormously popular. The lyrics to Kingdom Coming, also known as The Year of Jubilo, were written as though slaves in the Confederacy were celebrating their upcoming freedom. However, the song was actually released eight months before President Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation. Interestingly, Kingdom Coming also gained popularity in the South. A Southern edition was published in August in 1864, and the song remained a favorite in the former Confederacy for some years. Kingdom Coming has been used as theme or background music in a number of film, television and radio settings. Almost certainly its most popular iteration in modern times was the Sauter-Finegan Orchestra’s 1952 recording under the title Doodletown Fifers. This arrangement is a show-off piece for each member of the quintet. It moves along at a brisk pace of about 108, begins in the key of C and changes to A-flat, then B-flat. The first time through the melody, all instruments perform ensemble. Each succeeding repetition features an instrumentalist, starting with tuba and working up to Trumpet 1. The piece ends with another ensemble version. There are no exceptionally out-of-normal-playing-range notes: Trumpets 1 and 2 both play their B-flat below the scale several times, and Trumpet 2 plays G below the scale; Horn in F also plays its G below the scale; Trombone’s range is G at the bottom of the scale to D above the scale; Tuba’s lowest note is A-flat below the scale. Trumpet 1 will probably triple tongue its repetition of the melody, and some triple tonguing may be called for near the end of the piece for Trumpets 1 and 2 and Trombone.
