Published by Sweetwater Brass Press (A0.808675).     The defeat of Igor Svyatoslavich, a Rus’ prince, in his 1185 campaign against invading Cuman (Polovtsy) tribes was immortalized in the Russian epic, The Lay of Igor’s Campaign. Seven centuries later, Alexander Borodin started work on an opera based on that old tale. Borodin died before finishing, but Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov and Alexander Glazunov completed Prince Igor, and it was performed for the first time in 1890. Sixty-three years later the Broadway production Kismet opened featuring songs adapted by Robert Wright and George Forrest from the music of Borodin. Arguably, the most popular of the show’s songs was Stranger in Paradise, which was based on the Gliding Dance of the Maidens from the Polovtsian Dances of Prince Igor.     This beautiful brass quintet arrangement of Gliding Dance of the Maidens was adapted from the orchestra score. The key is A major, time signature is 4/4 and tempo marking is Andantino at the opening, slowing to a suggested quarter note = 63 at measure 15. Trumpets, Horn in F and Trombone all play a few grace notes. Highest notes for Trumpets are their G-sharp just above the staff; for Trombone, E above the staff. While not particularly challenging technically, the key to playing this piece is interpretation and feeling.    This arrangement was completed in 2017, and performance time runs about 2 minutes, 38 seconds. Published by Brassery Publications (A0.999620). Slaughter on Tenth Avenue is a ballet with music by Richard Rodgers and choreography by George Balanchine. It occurs near the end of Rodgers and Hart's 1936 Broadway musical comedy On Your Toes. Slaughter is the story of a hoofer who falls in love with a dance hall girl who is then shot and killed by her jealous boyfriend. The hoofer then shoots the boyfriend. The ballet is integrated into the plot of the musical by the device of having two gangsters watching it from box seats in the theatre in which it is staged. They have orders to shoot the leading dancer (played by Ray Bolger in the original production). The dancer, who has been warned just in time, evades them by suddenly dancing at full speed even after the ballet actually ends, and finally two police officers enter and arrest the gangsters. The opening section is slow, with gentle syncopation and sophisticated harmonies including very controlled dissonances to heighten the emotion and tension of the music. This is then followed by a riotous fast section with the modal feeling of a Scottish reel, with everyone getting a piece of the action. Frequent modulations and lively syncopations drive this music forward - you can almost hear the dancers stamp the floor! At the end of this section the syncopations wind down and the music returns to the material from the start of the piece, before winding down and relaxing even further to an almost mournful conclusion. The slower sections will require sensitive and musical playing and direction, whilst the fast section requires nimble fingers and tongues to get the best from the music. Suitable for players of Grade 6 upwards.

Sandungueo is a style of dance and party music associated with reggaeton. This reggaeton motive returns throughout the piece and culminates with it. The piece emulates a jazz ensemble where there are sections in which most instruments are called upon to solo against a rhythmic basso continuo or vamp. Latin and Hip-Hop rhythmic motives are prominent and integral to the work.

Presented here is a Canzona published around 1615 for 6 brass. A variety of substitute parts are also included to handle the trombone parts with French horns and tubas. A great work that draws from Gabrieli’s many styles. The piece starts with a song like tune that is repeated throughout. Each variation is separated by a 3/4 dance-like chanson repeated throughout. The final cadence is classic Gabrieli with its grand finale. A Gabrieli instrumental ensemble work that provides listeners with a variety of common Gabrieli touches all in one piece without requiring a lot of musical forces.

The Versatile Brass Classical CollectionThis is the Full Brass Band ArrangementI did this arrangement originally for Versatile Brass, which we played on a number of concerts. This is not an arrangement for the 'faint of heart'. It is difficult, because the piece is difficult... but what a magnificent piece of music it is. According to legend, Death appears at midnight every year on Halloween. Death calls forth the dead from their graves to dance for him while he plays his fiddle (here represented by the trumpets). His skeletons dance for him until the rooster crows at dawn, when they must return to their graves until the next year.The original piece opens with a playing a single note, D, played twelve times on the Harp, in my arrangement this is played by Tuba and Tubular Bell (the twelve strokes of midnight). The trumpet enters playing the tritone, which was known as the diabolus in musica (the Devil in music). Out of interest in the original, the solo violin plays this, during the Medieval and Baroque eras, consisting of an A and an Eâ™-in an example of scordatura tuning, the violinist's E string was actually been tuned down to an Eâ™ to create the dissonant tritone., no need for such alterations here.

Presented here is a wonderful Canzona published around 1615 for 10 brass with substitute parts for trumpets and trombones. The 4th Trombone part can also be played with Tuba if so desired. A great representative work of Gabrieli’s, this piece presents a 1 bar dance-like rhythm that is repeated and underscored throughout. After many variations, a chanson-like dance theme can be heard followed by a final presentation of the original melody that heads to a grand conclusion. An impressive and fun work for almost any church or concert setting.

Published by Sweetwater Brass Press (A0.808659). Prerecorded wax cylinders were first marketed in 1889. Ten years later, when this Howard and Emerson tune was published, those cylinders were referred to as records, and Arthur Collins made the first recording of Hello! Ma Baby. The lyrics tell the tale of a guy who has a girlfriend he knows only through the telephone. This was one of the first songs to deal with the telephone (that medium, too, being still pretty new). The chorus was kicked back into the spotlight in 1955 when a certain movie frog sang and danced his way across a Warner Brothers cartoon background. The current version used the 1899 sheet music as its source, but is a completely original arrangement that enhances the ragtime feel of the music. This is an infectious piece that is fun to play and a toe-tapper for the audience. Completed in 2016, this arrangement’s performance time runs about 3 minutes, 20 seconds. One of Gabrieli’s more beautiful and triumphant works, this piece starts out with a somber harmonic display that soon turns major alternating between the choirs. A brief chanson-like dance interlude then leads to the triumphant finale. A great work that displays the full harmonic range of the brass with many of Gabrieli’s typical antiphonal effects.
