Published by Brassery Publications (A0.999620). Slaughter on Tenth Avenue is a ballet with music by Richard Rodgers and choreography by George Balanchine. It occurs near the end of Rodgers and Hart's 1936 Broadway musical comedy On Your Toes. Slaughter is the story of a hoofer who falls in love with a dance hall girl who is then shot and killed by her jealous boyfriend. The hoofer then shoots the boyfriend. The ballet is integrated into the plot of the musical by the device of having two gangsters watching it from box seats in the theatre in which it is staged. They have orders to shoot the leading dancer (played by Ray Bolger in the original production). The dancer, who has been warned just in time, evades them by suddenly dancing at full speed even after the ballet actually ends, and finally two police officers enter and arrest the gangsters. Published by Sweetwater Brass Press (A0.808659). Prerecorded wax cylinders were first marketed in 1889. Ten years later, when this Howard and Emerson tune was published, those cylinders were referred to as records, and Arthur Collins made the first recording of Hello! Ma Baby. The lyrics tell the tale of a guy who has a girlfriend he knows only through the telephone. This was one of the first songs to deal with the telephone (that medium, too, being still pretty new). The chorus was kicked back into the spotlight in 1955 when a certain movie frog sang and danced his way across a Warner Brothers cartoon background. The current version used the 1899 sheet music as its source, but is a completely original arrangement that enhances the ragtime feel of the music. This is an infectious piece that is fun to play and a toe-tapper for the audience. Completed in 2016, this arrangement’s performance time runs about 3 minutes, 20 seconds. The Holberg Suite, Op. 40, more properly From Holberg's Time (Norwegian: Fra Holbergs tid), subtitled Suite in olden style (Norwegian: Suite i gammel stil), is a suite of five movements based on eighteenth-century dance forms, written by Edvard Grieg in 1884 to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the birth of Dano-Norwegian humanist playwright Ludvig Holberg (1684–1754).It exemplifies nineteenth-century music which makes use of musical styles and forms from the preceding century. Although not as famous as Grieg's incidental music from Peer Gynt, which is itself usually performed as arranged in a pair of suites, many critics regard the works as of equal merit.The Holberg Suite was originally composed for the piano, but a year later was adapted by Grieg himself for string orchestra. The suite consists of an introduction and a set of dances. It is an early essay in neoclassicism, an attempt to echo as much as was known in Grieg's time of the music of Holberg's era.This arrangement for brass is designed to make the suite playable but enjoyable to perform - it will challenge your brass players.

Even in a musical work can be heard both protagonist and antagonist voices in conflict, motifs rivaling for preeminence as they interweave, confront and overarch. Such is the case with the fantasia, Conflictus. It begins with a simple theme on a single note; it ends in similar manner: a placid unison as once-strident voices are drawn, still passively resisting, to a concordance. The title Pelican Suite comes from the work being based on and inspired by New Orleans style brass band music, most notably from groups such as Dirty Dozen Brass Band and Soul Rebels. Written in three movements, movement 1 alludes to a fanfare/march/dance type music. Movement 2 is solemn, reflecting funeral music and movement 3, titled Wonderful Dreams was largely inspired by the Soul Rebels rendition of the early techno-pop song Sweet Dreams by the Eurhythmics.
