Published by Sweetwater Brass Press (A0.1093770).     The dictionary defines revel as “a time or instance of carefree fun.†The verb tipple refers to the imbibing of spirits. A tippler is one who drinks beer, wine, whiskey or other such spirituous liquids. So a tipplers revel would be a gathering of folks who, in the words of Dolly Parton’s “Two Doors Down,†are “laughing and drinking and having a party.†    This Tipplers Revel is a compilation of traditional drinking songs. It begins and ends with that bane of school trips, faculty sponsors, bus drivers and chaperones, “99 Bottles of Beer on the Wall.†And between those two bookends come “Rye Whiskey,†“Little Brown Jug,†“Landlord, Fill the Flowing Bowl,†“Jimmy Crack Corn,†“Beer, Beer, Beer (An Ode to Charlie Mops, The Man Who Invented Beer),†“Hot Time in the Old Town Tonight,†“Wein, Weib und Gesang [Wine, Woman, and Song],†“Drink to Me Only with Thine Eyes,†“There Is a Tavern in the Town,†“Good Night, Ladies,†“How Dry I Am,†and brief quotes from about a half dozen other melodies associated with quaffing.     For the most part, this arrangement’s time signature is 4/4 and should be played at about 120 BPM. There are, however, two sections of 3/4 time, one of which is marked “tempo di valse,†and the opening and ending few measures should be played rather slowly.     The music should be well within the normal range of the group. Possible exceptions: trumpets play their A above the staff a couple of times.     There are quite a few 16th notes in the allegro sections. (And one could make the argument that at least two sections ought to have been written in 6/8 time. But they weren’t.)     Completed in 2022, performance time runs about 6 minutes, 43 seconds. Published by Sweetwater Brass Press (A0.808680).     First published in Flowers for Children, Volume 2 in 1844, Lydia Maria Child’s poem, The New-England Boy's Song about Thanksgiving Day, describes a sleigh trip to Grandfather’s house to commemorate the national day of thanks and the anticipation of the tasty food that will be consumed in celebration thereof. Why were they in a sleigh in a New England late November? Because the Little Ice Age was still extant in the early 19th Century and there was snow on the ground! Later, maybe in the 1870s, the poem was set to a tune, the composer of which is unknown. As years passed, the words were changed to Grandmother’s house, the song was adapted to a Christmas carol and the title changed to the first line of the poem, Over the River and Through the Woods.

The New-England Boy's Song about Thanksgiving Day, also known as Over the River and Through the Wood, is a Thanksgiving poem by Lydia Maria Child, originally published in 1844 in Flowers for Children, Volume 2. Although many people sing to grandmother's house we go, the author's original words were to grandfather's house we go. Moreover, in modern American English, most people use the word woods rather than wood in reference to a forest, and sing the song accordingly.

The Queen's Gambit is a miniseries that Netflix released in October 2020, and it quickly became one of their most-watched shows around the world.
Show aside, it has one of the most exciting musical scores, with the title number being my absolute favorite of the entire soundtrack, written by Carlos Rafael Rivera.
Scored for 2 trumpets, 2 french horns, 2 trombones, and 2 tubas. There are 2-part divisis here and there in all parts except the 2nd tuba.
Geared for the more advanced groups, this piece is on fire from start to finish. At under 2 minutes, you and your choir will have quite the workout. This would be a great opener or closer for your concerts.

This piece is inspired by two river adventures from the days when I aspired to be a professional trumpet player. The first adventure was a kayaking trip on the Charles River in Boston, MA and the second was a tubing trip on the Huron River in Ann Arbor, MI. While lazily floating down these rivers with my friends, I imagined us with our instruments, laughing and playing. It is a joyful image that sticks with me to this day, however, I invite you to imagine your own fantasy while listening to this piece! A slightly different version of this piece premiered on May 25th, 2013 at the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Herndon, VA. This was one of two original compositions that I performed for my senior recital in high school. Published by Lyons Music Services (A0.767282). As part of my continuing project to transcribe Monteverdi's madrigals onto winds, here is the 6th book. In this book we see a much greater development towards dramatic representation. In a way, this book is divisible into two Scenes with a number of single items in between. The vocal lines are all much more complex and we can also see the beginnings of monodic writing appear in the semi-recit sections of some of the songs. Also clearly developing are delineations of the voices into soloists and chorus. Several songs in this book are almost akin to arias, with clear soloistic writing for the higher voices (Cantus/Tenor). This is the final song in the book and it forms a kind of short scena all by itself. The words are very evocative and descriptive. The title translates as By a tranquil river. As with all things madrigalian, the lyrics are rife with double entendres. Monteverdi uses some very close dissonances to describe death and release.

One of the most beautiful and haunting of America’s native-to-the-soil melodies, Shenandoah dates probably from the early 19th century and continues to be performed and to enchant to this day. Said to be the product of voyageurs, fur trappers canoeing down the Missouri River, it has accumulated numerous sets of lyrics over the years. In perhaps the most familiar of these, a voyageur sings of his love for the daughter of the Oneida chief Shenandoah while paddling the river. Boatmen on their flatboats heard this melody and took it for their own, passing it along to sailors of Mississippi River vessels. It made its way down to the sea, where it became a popular sea shanty and was thus spread around the world.

Euphony can be defined as the use of words and phrases that are distinguished as having a wide range of noteworthy melody or loveliness in the sounds they create. It gives pleasing and soothing effects to the ear due to repeated vowels and smooth consonants. Euphony was chosen as the title of this composition because each movement has a title beginning with Euph and the music is descriptive of the movement titles. The first movement is titled Euphenism. A euphenism is a polite word or phrase that is substituted for a word or phrase that has a harsher meaning. The music of this movement begins gentler than the way it ends, therefore the beginning can be considered an euphenism for the end. Euphrates is the title of the second movement. This mighty river that flows from Turkey through Syria and Iran was an important river in ancient times for its extensive irrigation of the Mesopotanian Valley. This movement is both flowing and expansive. Euphorbia, the title of the third movement, is a genus of flowering plants. It is also caused Spurge as it tends to appear where it is not wanted. This movement is a pretty waltz that is constantly interrupted by a dissonant motif. This motif represents the invasive quality of Spurge. The last movement is called Euphoria. It sparkles with its driving rhythms, fast tempo, and syncopation, all representing unbridled joy.

Steinberg (A0.870434). This arrangement of a popular fanfare from Handel’s Water Music has been commonly played at church services and weddings for many years. The Water Music itself is a collection of pieces written at different times between 1717 and 1733. It is not clear as to the setting these were written for although most speculation seems to believe that these were pieces written for King George I during his many river outings. The collection of the pieces was assembled and published under the title Water Music in 1740. Although commonly written for small orchestra or larger brass ensembles, usually with two F Horns, this arrangement has been specially scored for a standard brass quintet instrumentation. In addition, the seldom played middle section has also been included. The fanfare’s popular melody is easily recognized by audiences and the work is still as exciting today as it was when first performed in the 18th century.

Other individual parts are available, as well as a bundle of the score with all individual parts included.One of my COVID19 summer lock-down projects, primarily inspired by the recent wave of good weather in England. This project was inspired by the way two rivers collide. The song starts in a major key for the first section and modulates to a minor key for the middle section. The final section modulates between both major and minor as though both sections have collided and converged.Original piece of music composed for a small four-part brass ensemble of Intermediate to Advanced players, ideal for secondary school students or small brass bands.
