The Fifth book of madrigals starts to see much more development towards operatic style writing, with more songs being strung together to form scenas and with the addition of accompaniment on instruments. Some of these songs can be written by incorporating the accompaniment into the parts for those instruments which are resting, some will require more than a quintet. Certainly as we get into the next three books, reduction to a quintet will become increasingly more difficult, if not impossible. The penultimate song, again presents difficulties in arranging for quintet, however the sixth voice mostly alternates with the others and so with a bit of jusicious adaptation, a six-voice song becomes a quintet. It is one of the first arias to prominently feature the natural horn alongside the solo vocalist and the extract is often required for horn auditions with opera orchestras.This arrangement for brass quintet features a solo trumpet performing the vocal line with the solo horn largely replicating the original extract from the opera, accompanied by the other three members of the ensemble. .

Published by Lyons Music Services (A0.767274). As part of my continuing project to transcribe Monteverdi's madrigals onto winds, here is the 6th book. In this book we see a much greater development towards dramatic representation. In a way, this book is divisible into two Scenes with a number of single items in between. The vocal lines are all much more complex and we can also see the beginnings of monodic writing appear in the semi-recit sections of some of the songs. Also clearly developing are delineations of the voices into soloists and chorus. Several songs in this book are almost akin to arias, with clear soloistic writing for the higher voices (Cantus/Tenor). The first four songs form a kind of introductory 'scena', which Monteverdi calls Lamento d'Arianna. A little later, there is a set of 6 songs which he grouped together under the title Sestina. Song number 5 sits between Lamento della Ninfa and Sestina as a stand-alone song. Zephyrs turn and bring good weather A zephyr is a kind of fickle wind that can bring clouds or sunshine. As with all things madrigalian, the lyrics are rife with double entendres. Monteverdi uses some very close dissonances to describe death and release.

In this collection of songs, Monteverdi, for the first time, starts to bring small groups of songs (2 or 3) to form a 'Scena - a collection with similar words or on a similar theme or by the same poet and keeping them as a little group within the book of madrigals. Song number two O Come e Gran Martire and is an attempt to persuade a young lady to dally by proclaiming how much of a martyr he is to hide his desires! As with all of Monteverdi's vocal music, it translates really well onto instruments. The individual madrigals are available separately. This is a transcription for brass quartet (2 Bb trumpets, F horn and trombone) of another arrangement that I wrote for my middle school students, originally written for mixed woodwind quartet.

The polyphony becomes more complex and more tonal and the interdependence of the parts more striking. He is experimenting with more dissonance but also moves towards more tonal writing. Although a far cry from the I IV V and minor of the modern pop song, he is nonetheless helping to push forward a more diatonic type of harmony with a more dramatic tonal and harmonic structure that goes much more towards true word painting than his previous books. The Versatile Brass Classical CollectionThis is the Full Brass Band ArrangementI did this arrangement originally for Versatile Brass, which we played on a number of concerts. This is not an arrangement for the 'faint of heart'. It is difficult, because the piece is difficult... but what a magnificent piece of music it is. According to legend, Death appears at midnight every year on Halloween. Death calls forth the dead from their graves to dance for him while he plays his fiddle (here represented by the trumpets). His skeletons dance for him until the rooster crows at dawn, when they must return to their graves until the next year.The original piece opens with a playing a single note, D, played twelve times on the Harp, in my arrangement this is played by Tuba and Tubular Bell (the twelve strokes of midnight). The trumpet enters playing the tritone, which was known as the diabolus in musica (the Devil in music). Out of interest in the original, the solo violin plays this, during the Medieval and Baroque eras, consisting of an A and an Eâ™-in an example of scordatura tuning, the violinist's E string was actually been tuned down to an Eâ™ to create the dissonant tritone., no need for such alterations here.

This arrangement is part of the Chicago Gargoyle Brass & Organ Ensemble Signature Series.Passacaglia and Fugue in C minor (BWV 582) is an organ work composed by Bach early in his career. It is arguably one of his greatest and most important works. The passacaglia starts with an ostinato theme, followed by 20 variations. Immediately after the passacaglia, without break, is a double fugue based on the ostinato theme. This arrangement pays homage to the great transcriptions of Stokowski and Ormandy, by weaving the colors of brass, organ and percussion into symphonic textures. Perfect for any recital, concert or pops program. This arrangement is scored for brass quintet, organ and a single percussionist (timpani, snare drum, suspended cymbal). Due to the range of the first trumpet (to C6), parts are provided for trumpet in C, E-flat and doubling on B-flat trumpet/B-flat piccolo (select whichever part works best for you).
