Published by G L Harvey (A0.805866). This piano classic in C minor, second in the series of J S Bach's 48 Preludes & Fugues, has been arranged for flexible brass quartet. With concerts, recitals and wedding performances in mind, this arrangement will be popular with players and audiences alike. The Prelude has an irrevocable sense of momentum, only sated with a short cadenza like flourish and a final bout of arpeggios. The Fugue allows all four voices to develop and flourish after the forced regimentation of the Prelude. The difficulty level for the Prelude is about ABRSM grade 5-6, and the Fugue about grade 5-8 with the outside parts taking the more technical moments, although optional alternatives are scored where range appropriate to lower difficulty if desired. The PDF is 33 pages in length (portrait A4) and includes a full score and parts for flexible brass quartet (2 Cornets/Trumpets, Tenor Horn/F Horn/Baritone/Trombone and Euphonium/BassTrombone). Bb treble and bass clef parts included as appropriate. The combined duration of the Prelude & Fugue is about 3 minutes 20 seconds.

For brass octet (2 Tp. in Bb, 1 Flglhn., in F Horn, 2 Tb, Euph., and Tuba) can also be well-utilized by a brass choir. This is a terrific transcription of a little-down, but powerful piece by J. S. Bach for organ. The mp3 file is a FINALE audio extract (not a great sound, but certainly good enough to get one the scope of the piece). It work just as well taken a bit more slowly.

This is the only known six-voice fugue in music literature; and despite the title, Bach himself thought of it as such, often referring to it as his Prussian Fugue. By the time of Bach, distinctions had nearly disappeared between ricercari and fugues. Most organists, however, stick to the painfully slow tempi of ricercari in performance, and speeding it up a bit in this arrangement makes it much more accessible to players and listeners alike. The FINALE audio extract is a bit misleading, as there is no sound bank for flugelhorns; but you certainly get the drift. It's a bit of a haul; a C trumpet part has been included as a substitute for the Eb trumpet called for in the score. This piece would work well as a brass ensemble chart.

The greatest church in the greatest city of Europe. Freedom of intellectual thought. A Venetian School of composers at the forefront of musical innovation. The printing press and musical publishing. A Doge (Chief Magistrate or Duke) willing to spend, and spend big, on musical pomp and ceremony. A dearth of wealth and money to fund the grandest celebrations. He was the leading Italian composer and organist in Venice at its greatest heights at the chasm between the end of the Renaissance and the beginning of the Baroque period in music. One of the most popular of his smaller instrument works are the 4 Canzonas. Presented here is the second of them written around 1608. Quite popular among brass players, this work starts with a running theme that is almost fugue-like as it passes from one instrument to the next. A great work from Gabrieli, it is complex in structure yet never loses its pleasing sonorities that build until the final climax.

The final movement features a remarkable triple fugue, which was the motivation for this trio arrangement.This arrangement contains the entire 4th movement distilled to just three players. It was originally created for cello trio, and includes bowings and fingerings for cello. It also works as a viola trio, a bassoon trio, a clarinet trio, and a French Horn trio. Elizabeth Raum's Quintet for Brass was written in 1980 and is just now being published for the first time. The work is in four movements: 1. Prelude, 2. Scherzo and Blues, 3. Passacaglia and Fugue and 4. Rondo. It is written for traditional brass quintet with Trumpets in B-flat for advanced performers and is about 15 minutes in length. The music is very expressive and tonal. Below is a brief description of the work by the composer, Elizabeth Raum. This piece is very much based on various musical forms. The Prelude has opened many a musical work from Baroque to the present. Then follows Scherzo and Blues, a light hearted bonbon moving into a lazy blues. Next is pure Baroque starting with a Passacaglia followed by a Fugue based on the Passacaglia progression. And finally finishing up with the Rondo, in a major key, light-hearted, canonic in places, with a feeling of the evolution of musical form.

This fast, fun and simple march teeters between major and minor tonality to give it a somewhat comedic effect. The melody moves from one instrument to the next giving every member of the ensemble a chance to shine. As the piece nears the climax of the fugue sounding section you will hear the broken record section as the material repeats several times and finally the music pauses. The music then restarts as it has gone way off track from the march you heard at the beginning and plays to the silly bombastic end.
