The First 5 series is suitable for elementary level performers of all ages. It provides seven pieces which are musically satisfying and fun to play without demanding more than basic technical ability and theoretical knowledge and the first five notes learned on the instrument. Pitches used: Bb C D Eb F. Rhythmic values used: semibreve (whole-note), dotted minim (dotted half-note), minim (half-note), crotchet (quarter note), quavers (eighth-notes). Quavers (eighth-notes) appear only in groups of 2 or 4. Articulations/signs used: staccato, accent, slur, tie, repeat, 1st and 2nd time endings. Each piece may be performed as a Solo (use Part 1), Duet or 2-part Ensemble. All pieces in the First 5 series are in the same concert key, enabling performances with various combinations of these instruments: Flute, Clarinet, Alto Sax, Tenor Sax, Trumpet, Trombone, Euphonium. Accompaniments for each piece are available as FREE MP3 FILES. These can be downloaded from kathysprintmusic.com. Published by Phillip Lawrence (A0.883769). I recently published Romeo & Juliet Tchiakovsky which is a big bridge musically technically and and needs a big chunk of stamina. Before I did this there was another work on my mind of an opposite challenge for band in the orch rep dep.An impressionist work of great delicacy, subtle beyond belief, the fabric is fragile like lace with a feeling of transparency and lucidity and must move as if played by one person, colour and timbre, light, lithe, the orchestration a masterpiece, utilising fx from all dep’s often at ppp and most difficult to replicate at all for brass band.And, it’s a fair cop! The purists outsiders will say that this is the last piece that should be arranged for a brass band. So why arrange the greatest impressionist work ever written, for Brass Band?Well, because it’s there, and I believe it can be played with the above requirements by band. The work was written in the summer of 1894, and finished in the September. Three months later in December the Societe Nationale de Musique conducted by Gustave Doret with Marcel Moyse playing the opening flute solo gave the first performance. The concept of the piece was built around a poem by Stephan Mallarme, who describes the wishes and dreams of a faun in the heat of a summer afternoon. Prep for tres difficile?

Outreach is a band friendly composition that starts out mellow and sweet, and slowly intensifies over the course of the piece. The piece is about eight minutes and features a trumpet trio, concert piano, french horn, trombone, tenor sax soli/solo, alto sax solo and woodwind solos. The piccolo and flute parts can be held up an octave if audibility is an issue. The clarinet part features an altissimo A which is the same fingering for altissimo E, but a squeak above that.*NOTE*The concert piano part is for 4 hands not twoThe timpani, cymbals and other shenanigans can be improvised for a more intense effectThe bass drum part has excessive rests Flutes may rage due to fast B flatsBrass players might not be able to reach some notesMore french horns might be needed for volume in the last half of the piece.

It is a set of four concerti for Violin, each of the four representing one of the four seasons. A performance of the entire original set would take at least 40 minutes. This version is a collection of the main themes presented as a short suite and takes approximately 5 minutes to perform. Alternatively, each of the movements may be performed as a separate piece. The aim of this arrangement was to give Early Intermediate Level Woodwind and/or Brass players an opportunity to perform what is undoubtedly one of the most well-known pieces of Baroque string repertoire. The instrumentation is flexible, allowing for many different combinations of instruments, including Clarinet Trio/ Ensemble, Saxophone Trio/Ensemble, Brass Trio/Ensemble and even Concert Band. The Solo at the start of the 4th Movement (Winter) is an opportunity to feature a Part 1 player who is more advanced. The inclusion of this short section is entirely optional. Part 4 is optional and can be used to include a Tuba and/or less competent players of Clarinet, Bass Clarinet, Tenor Saxophone and F Horn. The inclusion of a Tuba is preferable in the case of a large brass ensemble. The inclusion of a Bass Clarinet (Part 3 or 4) is preferable in a large clarinet ensemble. The score is shown in concert pitch. Octave displacement occurs in some parts. Parts 2, 3 and 4 are kept below the break for the Clarinet and/or Bass Clarinet players.
