It was allegedly written for a 5-shilling bet in Stalybridge on January 30, 1912 and performed the next night at the local music hall. Now commonly called It’s a Long Way to Tipperary, the original printed music calls it It’s a Long, Long Way to Tipperary. It became popular among soldiers in the First World War and is remembered as a song of World War I. Pack Up Your Troubles in Your Old Kit-Bag, and Smile, Smile, Smile is the full name of the World War I marching song, published in 1915 in London. It was written by Welsh songwriters, George Henry Powell under the pseudonym of George Asaf, and set to music by his brother Felix Powell. It was featured in the American show Her Soldier Boy, which opened in December 1916. This skillful arrangement by Jari Villanueva captures the flavor of the original tunes and would be a great selection commemorating the 100th anniversary of World War I. The arrangement includes the verses of the tunes and the British bugle call Fall In. This clever arrangement culminates in a rousing section that superimposes both tunes. Included is a Full Score and parts for Brass Ensemble. Also included are substitute parts for Eb Horns and Treble Clef Baritone Horn A retired member of the United States Air Force Band where he served on the Music Production staff (as well as a trumpeter and bugler) and a student of Bill Holcombe, Jari Villanueva continues writing for different ensembles. His arrangements are played by bands, brass ensembles and brass quintets all over the country including many military groups. Euphony was chosen as the title of this composition because each movement has a title beginning with Euph and the music is descriptive of the movement titles. The first movement is titled Euphenism. A euphenism is a polite word or phrase that is substituted for a word or phrase that has a harsher meaning. The music of this movement begins gentler than the way it ends, therefore the beginning can be considered an euphenism for the end. Euphrates is the title of the second movement. This mighty river that flows from Turkey through Syria and Iran was an important river in ancient times for its extensive irrigation of the Mesopotanian Valley. This movement is both flowing and expansive. Euphorbia, the title of the third movement, is a genus of flowering plants. It is also caused Spurge as it tends to appear where it is not wanted. This movement is a pretty waltz that is constantly interrupted by a dissonant motif. This motif represents the invasive quality of Spurge. The last movement is called Euphoria. It sparkles with its driving rhythms, fast tempo, and syncopation, all representing unbridled joy.

The second, a product of Scandinavian imaginations, is a rather unattractive dwarf (or maybe a giant) that dwells in caves or on mountains. The third is a small, hirsute and naughty household spirit. In other words, these are just the types of beings that show up on your doorstep on October 31 evenings threatening to play tricks unless you provide treats.  This composition exemplifies not only these creatures, but also the witches, skeletons, ghosts, vampires, black cats and other scary beings that populate Halloween. Written in the key of C minor with a 6/8 time signature, it rolls along at a suggested tempo of 96 BPM. Based primarily on the traditional melody, The Hearse Song (the worms crawl in, the worms crawl out), it also quotes the composer’s own The Eerie Night and Chopin’s Marche Funèbre. And like the worms of the song, the melodies work their way sinuously in and out among the five instruments. Most notes are well within normal playing range: Trumpet 1’s highest is five A notes above its staff; Tuba’s lowest, G below the staff. There are no tricky rhythmic figures. It’s just a fun piece for Halloween . . . or any time of the year.  Completed in 2021, performance time for Gremlins, Trolls and Hobgoblins runs about 3 minutes, 33 seconds. The title Inventions' has a double meaning. The first meaning is that each movement represents a significant invention. The second meaning is each movement has sections reminiscent of a musical invention, a short contrapuntal composition that is usually based on a single theme. Movement 1 – The Wheel – This movement is a perpetual motion in triple meter. Movement II – The Metronome - The music in this movement represents a mechanical, wind-up metronome. Movement III – The Periscope - The movement is in an ABA'B' form. The A section, with its dark colors and slow 6/8 represents a submarine, lurking under water. The B section begins with ominous sounds that accompany the rising of the periscope and the scanning of the horizon for destroyers and for prey. Movement IV – Morse Code – The form of this movement is ABA’B’AB’’A’Coda. The A section rhythmically spells out the words brass trio in Morse code, first homophonically and then contrapuntally. The B sections spell out the names of the instruments playing the musical line in Morse code. The Coda spells out the words the end in Morse code. Movement V – The Airplane - This movement begins with a celebratory section in 7/8 and 6/8 representing the success of the Wright Brothers. After this festive beginning, a sustained melody represents the first flight that lasted 12 seconds with Orville at the controls. This melody also lasts 12 seconds. Accompanying the sustained melody is the steady staccato eighth note rhythm representing the sound of the motor. After a short celebratory interlude, another sustained melody of flight occurs with Wilbur is at the controls. The staccato eighth note motor accompaniment changes into a flowing triplet figure during 59-second flight, the longest of 1903. The flight melody now lasts 59 seconds as well. After a soft landing of the flight melody, the celebration theme ends the movement in a festive and exciting manner.

In writing the Ricercare In B Flat Major For Brass Orchestra, it came to my attention the works of Giovanni Gabrielli, Palestrina and other composers of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. The fugues of Johann Sebastien Bach and his contemporaries are the descendants of the ricercare in that the themes are treated contrapuntally. The main feature in the ricercare and the fugue is the melodic imitation of the principal theme. Unlike the fugues of Bach that includes the countersubject, the ricercare has no regular countermelody to provide musical interest to the theme. Another feature to discover in the Ricercare In B Flat Major is the concerto nature, where the trumpet ensemble plays against instruments of lower pitch registration and the French horn chorus plays against instruments of different tone colors. The concluding section of the piece includes all instruments playing together.In performing the work, the brass orchestra performs together on stage. There also may be a possibility of having the work performed in different parts of a hall to give listeners an idea of the concerto-like works of Gabrielli’s sacred symphonies. This idea may be decided at the discretion of the conductor and the ensemble.The work is suitable for concert use and may be used to teach students the compositional techniques composers of previous centuries used in composing their works.

Antonio Vivaldi's Concerto for Two Trumpets in C with Brass Ensemble and Timpani is a rarity for the Baroque era when solos for brass instruments were almost non-existent. The valveless nascent Trumpets were very difficult to play. But as with Bach, there must have been a few brave souls who mastered the instrument and inspired the composer to write his inspired work.As with most of Vivaldi's concertos, this one begins with a quick and sparkling movement to catch the attention of the audience and to showcase the bright tones of the solo trumpets. This is followed by a contrasting brief and languid second movement. The final movement is back to brilliant mode with quick energy and intricate passages for the soloists. (Encylopedia Britannica).Niels-Ole Bo Johansen has created a very unique arrangement for the two solo Trumpets with Brass Ensemble and Timpani...unique in that the accompaniment instruments are almost all conical (except for the trombones who can blend nicely into that pool of round sounds). This gives the listener a sharp contrast between the brilliance of the soloists and the plush sound of the accompaniment.The 6 1/2 minute work is appropriate for advanced performers. It runs around 5 1/2 minutes long, has deep chords, running triplets, and some incredible themes. Brahms was a master at filling and changing chords by using techniques such as running triplets. Other parts are filled with full, deep chords made by the brass band that is much deeper than the original piano accompaniment and gives a unique sound that only a brass band can provide.Instead of using the full Movement 1 as Brahms wrote it, just the melodies were used and woven throughout the piece.It is a difficult piece with an extensive Marimba part as the primary percussion part. I wrote the Fanfare and Scherzo for this quintet in 1979 using an ink pen and manuscript paper the old-fashioned way. These two movements were premiered by The Palos Verdes Brass Quintet that year and then were largely forgotten as I started working in non-musical areas the next year.After I retired, I ran across them while cleaning out my desk and offered them to the current PVSB Brass Quintet (none of whom were in the original group) and they graciously played them again. I always intended to write two more movements and finally did it 40 years later.The Lullaby calls for flügelhorns and has a vocal part. It is not intended to be sung necessarily but for the lyrics to provide a mood for this dark piece, which is probably best suited for Eddie Munster or Lio. I have sort of a warped sense of humor. The Finale is more serious, but not that much. Aside from the Scherzo the piece is not too difficult. The duration is about 12 minutes.
