Bach's Fugue No. 2 in C minor is perhaps the most beloved and best known of all Bach's fugues in his Well-Tempered Clavier collection. Here, it has been carefully arranged for brass trio, with flexible substitute parts. Part 1 is for Bb trumpet. Part 2 is for horn in F, however, a part is also provided for Part 2 to be covered by a second Bb trumpet if preferred. Part 3 is for trombone or euphonium/baritone BC, but parts are also provided so that Part 3 may be performed by baritone TC or tuba. Since parts are available for trumpet, horn in F, trombone, euphonium/baritone, and tuba, this trio could also be performed by the entire brass section of a traditional concert band. A great work from Gabrieli, it is complex in structure yet never loses its pleasing sonorities that build until the final climax.

This is the only known six-voice fugue in music literature; and despite the title, Bach himself thought of it as such, often referring to it as his Prussian Fugue. By the time of Bach, distinctions had nearly disappeared between ricercari and fugues. Most organists, however, stick to the painfully slow tempi of ricercari in performance, and speeding it up a bit in this arrangement makes it much more accessible to players and listeners alike. The FINALE audio extract is a bit misleading, as there is no sound bank for flugelhorns; but you certainly get the drift. It's a bit of a haul; a C trumpet part has been included as a substitute for the Eb trumpet called for in the score. This piece would work well as a brass ensemble chart.

In writing the Ricercare In B Flat Major For Brass Orchestra, it came to my attention the works of Giovanni Gabrielli, Palestrina and other composers of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. The fugues of Johann Sebastien Bach and his contemporaries are the descendants of the ricercare in that the themes are treated contrapuntally. The main feature in the ricercare and the fugue is the melodic imitation of the principal theme. Unlike the fugues of Bach that includes the countersubject, the ricercare has no regular countermelody to provide musical interest to the theme. Another feature to discover in the Ricercare In B Flat Major is the concerto nature, where the trumpet ensemble plays against instruments of lower pitch registration and the French horn chorus plays against instruments of different tone colors. The concluding section of the piece includes all instruments playing together.In performing the work, the brass orchestra performs together on stage. There also may be a possibility of having the work performed in different parts of a hall to give listeners an idea of the concerto-like works of Gabrielli’s sacred symphonies. This idea may be decided at the discretion of the conductor and the ensemble.The work is suitable for concert use and may be used to teach students the compositional techniques composers of previous centuries used in composing their works.
