Score and parts. 28 pages. Sweetwater Brass Press #6433397. Published by Sweetwater Brass Press (A0.808709). Mary Lou Williams learned to play piano on her own at age 3. By age 6 she was playing piano to help support her large family. At age 15, she turned professional, and by the time she was 20, she had made a name for herself nationally not only as a jazz musician but also as an arranger and composer. In 1943, she wrote a piece titled Satchel Mouth Baby, which she recorded the next year with her group, Mary Lou and her Chosen Five. Three years later, Bill Johnson and His Musical Notes recorded Williams’ song after he and Leo Snub Mosley had worked on the lyrics and changed the title to Pretty Eyed Baby. Others would go on to record Pretty Eyed Baby, among them: Frankie Laine and Jo Stafford, Jane Turzy, Johnnie Ray, Peggy Lee and Roy Eldridge. This arrangement skips along at about 120 bpm. It contains common swing rhythmic figures, and all notes are well within the normal playing range of most brass musicians. Horn in F and Trombone carry the melodic load, but all instruments get a turn at playing lead. This is a fun piece, so don’t be surprised if your audience starts clapping along while you’re playing. Completed in 2021, performance time for Pretty Eyed Baby runs about 3 minutes,9 seconds. Versatile Brass Old Time CollectionThe song was written about a year after the Royal Air Force and German aircraft had been fighting over southern England, including the white cliffs of Dover, in the Battle of Britain. Nazi Germany had conquered much of Europe and in 1941 was still bombing Britain. With neither America nor the Soviet Union having yet joined the war, Britain was the only major power fighting the Axis powers in Europe (see The Darkest Hour). The American lyricist, Nat Burton, wrote his lyric unaware that the bluebird is not indigenous to Britain and asked Kent to set it to music. Notable phrases include Thumbs Up! which was an RAF and RCAF term for permission to go, and flying in those angry skies where the air war was taking place.The lyrics also looked towards a time when the war would be over and peace would rule over the iconic white cliffs, Britain's symbolic border with the European mainland.The song was made most famous by Vera Lynn and sung to troops during the war. It was a top ten hit in America for Kate Smith in 1942, and Glenn Miller recorded a version in November 1941.Jimmie Baker frequently performed it in Europe during the war, and the song was sung by the vocal group The King's Men on a 3 February 1942 episode of the Fibber McGee and Molly Show. Ray Eberle and Tex Beneke also included it in their repertoire.This is a simple arrangement of the song playable by all levels of ensemble.

Parts are supplied to allow instruments in C, Bb, Eb and F to combine to play together. C parts are provided in Treble, Alto and Bass clefs. This is not really suitable for absolute beginners as it goes into 4 sharps, but with a little perseverance it should be playable by most well-practiced groups. The main tune stays in the 1st part throughout, but other tunes appear as we go through the repetitions (Row your Boat, Frere Jacques) to help keep your place. p>The piece opens with a single part (1) which is joined by other voices one at a time for each of the first four verses. Care will need to be taken to count the bars as the number of men increases. There's a lot of fun to be had from playing this piece. If you want to add some cuteness, the lyrics are provided so parts can be sung.
