The most popular of such acts was Al Jolson, famous for singing Mammy. Al Jolson was the most celebrated white popular singer before Frank Sinatra, and he starred in the first talkie (motion picture with sound). That's perfectly awful, but I came across a coon song that I thought had a great tune, and my arrangement worked out fine. Unfortunately, its title is Coon! Coon! Coon! In Irish folklore the leprehaun is portrayed as a little bearded man, wearing a green coat and hat, and who gets into all kinds of mischief. In general they are solitary creatures who spend their time as cobblers making and mending shoes and have a pot of gold hidden at the end of the rainbow. According to the legends, if you are lucky enough to find a leprehaun and catch him you can exchange his freedom for his treasure. But leprehauns can be a tricky...take your eyes off him for just a second and he'll be gone in a wink leaving you with nothing!This should be played quite boisterously and playfully. It could fit into many types of programs of a light nature. Ideal for St.Patrick's Day or children's concerts.

Published by BJE Music (A0.750749). A beautiful arrangement for Brass Band. - Key of Ab to Bb in the last verse. This tune was composed by Philip Paul Bliss (1838-76); an American writer of hymns and a Gospel singer. In the 2nd verse, the melody is taken up by the Baritones and Trombones in a very easy comfortable range. The Descant part is played in the 3rd Verse at the change of key; A flourish of Cornets and Horns finishes with a rousing climax in the final chords. Parts are supplied to allow instruments in C, Bb, Eb and F to combine to play together. C parts are provided in Treble, Alto and Bass clefs. This is not really suitable for absolute beginners as it goes into 4 sharps, but with a little perseverance it should be playable by most well-practiced groups. The main tune stays in the 1st part throughout, but other tunes appear as we go through the repetitions (Row your Boat, Frere Jacques) to help keep your place. p>The piece opens with a single part (1) which is joined by other voices one at a time for each of the first four verses. Care will need to be taken to count the bars as the number of men increases. There's a lot of fun to be had from playing this piece. If you want to add some cuteness, the lyrics are provided so parts can be sung.

The Fifth book of madrigals starts to see much more development towards operatic style writing, with more songs being strung together to form scenas and with the addition of accompaniment on instruments. Some of these songs can be written by incorporating the accompaniment into the parts for those instruments which are resting, some will require more than a quintet.
