Published by Wadley Publications (A0.983164). This Brass Quintet won the 1996 Fine Arts Festival Music Award at Illinois State University, an international competition. Songs of the Warrior, a Brass Quintet in three movements, utilizes thematic material derived from a twelve-tone row, presented in three contrasting styles. While the piece stands on its own as absolute music following traditional formal structures, the titles of each movement do suggest a setting befitting the mood or atmosphere evoked by the music. I. The Cannon’s Mouth Following a slightly modified version of the classical sonata allegro form, this movement presents the thematic material in a freely atonal setting, Much use is made of variations of ancient two note war-horn calls, which would command soldiers to advance into direct combat with an enemy. II. Amidst the Fallen The second movement evokes images of the aftermath of battle and the horrors left on the field of war. Dynamic and rhythmic elements in the music produce a classic arch form. Melodic and harmonic structures are developed throughout the movement. III. Revelry A complete departure in style from the previous movements, Revelry features upbeat modal harmony and foot-tapping rhythms. Thematic material borrowed from the earlier movements is transformed to conform to the desired atmosphere. The form of the movement is best described as a hybrid rondo and variations. The light-hearted mood is perhaps a reflection of the joy found when a soldier returns to his home. This quintet presents three stylistically distinct movements, yet all are based on the same thematic sources. The first movement is somewhat cerebral and demands much virtuosity from the performers. The second is darker, with some almost lyrical melodic lines. The final movement is nothing if not bombastic. All-in-all, Songs of the Warrior provides a little something for everyone, from Berlioz to Schoenberg, with a little Bernstein on the side.

Published by Kevin P Holdgate (A0.791040). There's No Business Like Show Business is an Irving Berlin song, written for the 1946 musical Annie Get Your Gun and orchestrated by Ted Royal. The song, a slightly tongue-in-cheek salute to the glamour and excitement of a life in show business, is sung in the musical by members of Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show in an attempt to persuade Annie Oakley to join the production. It is reprised three times in the musical but for the purposes of the show that I made this arrangement for only 2 verses were required... a third verse could easily be added of course with appropriate lyrics.The song is also featured in the 1954 movie of the same name, where it is notably sung by Ethel Merman as the main musical number. The movie, directed by Walter Lang, is essentially a catalog of various Berlin's pieces, in the same way that Singin' in the Rain-which starred Donald O'Connor as well-was a collection of Arthur Freed songs. There was also a disco version of the song made during the 1970s, with Merman reprising her singing role in The Ethel Merman Disco Album. The song became one of Ethel Merman's standards and was often performed by her at concerts and on television.This is a simple arrangement of the song playable by all levels of ensemble

Published by Sweetwater Brass Press (A0.808706).     Orville and Wilbur Wright made their famous flight in late 1903; this song was published seven years later: Fred Fisher’s music with Alfred Bryan’s lyrics. The words form a narrative of a young man attempting to get his girlfriend to go up with him in his flying machine. And, that would take much more daring on her part than one might realize today. The year 1910 was still early days for aviation; most airplanes were still made of wood, wire and fabric and looked liked giant gliders. Supposedly, the Josephine of the song was Josephine Sarah Magner, reputed to be America’s first female parachutist. Magner married Leslie Burt Haddock, whose aviation career started in balloons, and made her first jump in 1905. During the next dozen years, she made more than 500 jumps. Pretty daring!    This arrangement is quirky and an absolute delight to play (and to listen to)! The first half is set in the song’s native ¾ time. The takeoff is the introduction, followed by the chorus, then the verse and again the chorus as the melody loops, rolls and spins through the five instruments. A middle section briefly quotes two other aerialist tunes-He flies through the air with the greatest of ease and Up in the air Junior Birdmen-and serves as a transition to cut time. A swing version of the chorus brings us in for a landing and final fade.    The arrangement begins in the key of C major and changes to G major during the transitional section. Suggested tempo is 76 bpm throughout. The arrangement comprises 202 measures: Horn in F plays the most notes, followed by Trombone and Tuba, while Trumpets get off relatively lightly. All notes are well within the normal playing range of the instruments; Trumpet 1 does, however, play A above its staff several times.    Completed in 2021, performance time for Come, Josephine in My Flying Machine runs about 3 minutes, 45 seconds. This is not really suitable for absolute beginners as it goes into 4 sharps, but with a little perseverance it should be playable by most well-practiced groups. The main tune stays in the 1st part throughout, but other tunes appear as we go through the repetitions (Row your Boat, Frere Jacques) to help keep your place. p>The piece opens with a single part (1) which is joined by other voices one at a time for each of the first four verses. Care will need to be taken to count the bars as the number of men increases. There's a lot of fun to be had from playing this piece. If you want to add some cuteness, the lyrics are provided so parts can be sung.

Published by Sweetwater Brass Press (A0.808684). Irving Berlin’s composition Alexander’s Ragtime Band was not only his first hit, it was also one of the most popular songs ever. It first gained widespread recognition when Emma Carus sang it in Chicago in 1911, and then it really took off when Al Jolson performed it in New York. It’s no wonder the popularity of Alexander’s has been so long-lived. Both words and music are absolutely bouncy and upbeat. The lyrics proclaim the Ragtime Band to be the best . . . in the land and invite the listener to come on and hear the group, even to meet its leader! The tune is energetic and lively, a salute to the toe-tapping Dixieland style that even then was developing in New Orleans.  This arrangement takes the natural exuberance of the melody and raises it a couple of notches. Wide open and sprightly, it features the trombone, but also gives each of the other parts a chance to shine, too. In addition to several iterations of the well-known chorus, it also includes the seldom-heard verse and even throws in a few true ragtime licks, quotes from Scott Joplin and Percy Wenrich. The tempo is a bouncy, cut-time 76, with some fairly tricky rhythms and one ritardando near the middle. Trumpet 1 plays a couple of notes above its staff, one A and one B. Trombone plays F above its staff several times and one brief G. Tuba’s lowest note is F below the staff. This arrangement was completed in 2018, and performance time runs about 4 minutes, 33 seconds.
