Some minimal syncopation may provide a bit of a challenge but should not be a major problem. Students learn to hear, see and perform various articulations and rhythm patterns. Score and parts are in open scoring and can be played by small or large groups with nearly any possible combination of instruments. Fanfares originated in the Middle Ages. They are generally composed to announce important occasions such as coronations, the olympics and other important occasions. Fanfares are frequently played outdoors and rely heavily on loud instruments such as brass and percussion. The Estampie was a popular instrumental style of the 13th and 14th centuries.The estampie consists of four to seven sections, called puncta, each of which is repeated, Students learn to hear, see and perform the difference between compound-duple and simple-duple meter as well as a variety of tempi.

See also the Brass Canon-Parts. This is a musical canon, for brass. What else would I call it? It's for 4 horns, 3 trumpets, 3 trombones, euphonium, tuba and tympani (F2 to Ab3). It's just over two minutes long, but very contrapuntal and a challenge. But playable, with rehearsal. Take it a section at a time, and insiste the others listen. Every theme they play is echoed by others, so once they hear the tuba solo in the beginning, everyone should just copy it, in their own octave and key. LOTS of modulations. Again, they'll groan but they'll learn things. And they'll.

Also thank you to anyone I tortured with the many edits and editions before this was finalized. This piece is inspired by the following stanza from Paradise Lost: Whence and what art thou, execrable shape, That dar'st, though grim and terrible, advance Thy miscreated front athwart my way To yonder gates? Through them I mean to pass, That be assured, without leave asked of thee. Retire; or taste thy folly, and learn by proof, Hell-born, not to contend with spirits of Heaven. Here we see Lucifer, even after he has fallen so far, his wings bound by adamantine chains, still view himself with pride for being filled with the light of Heaven. He challenges Death, thinking himself superior to the foul (and more powerful) being. This piece explores the arrogance and emotions that I associate with the work as a whole, but particularly in Lucifer’s ego. The MP3 given here is just the render off of staffpad. Enjoy! By age 6 she was playing piano to help support her large family. At age 15, she turned professional, and by the time she was 20, she had made a name for herself nationally not only as a jazz musician but also as an arranger and composer. In 1943, she wrote a piece titled Satchel Mouth Baby, which she recorded the next year with her group, Mary Lou and her Chosen Five. Three years later, Bill Johnson and His Musical Notes recorded Williams’ song after he and Leo Snub Mosley had worked on the lyrics and changed the title to Pretty Eyed Baby. Others would go on to record Pretty Eyed Baby, among them: Frankie Laine and Jo Stafford, Jane Turzy, Johnnie Ray, Peggy Lee and Roy Eldridge. This arrangement skips along at about 120 bpm. It contains common swing rhythmic figures, and all notes are well within the normal playing range of most brass musicians. Horn in F and Trombone carry the melodic load, but all instruments get a turn at playing lead. This is a fun piece, so don’t be surprised if your audience starts clapping along while you’re playing. Completed in 2021, performance time for Pretty Eyed Baby runs about 3 minutes,9 seconds. He specifically asked for a version that had a Cornet fanfare into the last verse and a scale based 'obligato'. As he put it very succinctly when I showed him the arrangement a few weeks before he died - 'I have been telling those buggers on the cornet section how important learning scales are. Now they might realise why'This is a straightforward arrangement of the hymn. The final fanfare and scales from the cornets can be omitted at the discretion of the conductor
