Sweetwater Brass Press #3213035. Published by Sweetwater Brass Press (A0.808676). Marvin Hamlisch’s score for the 1973 movie The Sting revived interest in ragtime music. Ragtime, of course, is music, often in march-time, that features syncopation, a ragged beat. It originated in African-American districts of large cities and first flourished during the period, 1895-1918. One of the most successful ragtime composers was Scott Joplin, known as the King of Ragtime. Hamlisch used several Joplin compositions as background music for the George Roy Hill-directed film, and one of those was this beautiful and contemplative 1909 composition, Solace: A Mexican Serenade. In All Music Guide to Classical Music: The Definitive Guide to Classical Music (Woodstra et al., ed., CMP Books: 2005), Blair Johnston called Solace a musical hybrid neither authentically Mexican nor authentic ragtime. It is, instead, a habanera, but also a very lovely piece of Americana. This brass quintet arrangement of Solace was adapted from the Joplin piano score. Like the score, this arrangement is in 2/4 time and contains a lot of 16th notes. Joplin’s tempo instruction, however, is Very slow march time, and the metronome marking suggests 96 eighth notes a minute, so in reality the actual tempo is an andante 4/8. Trumpet 1 has some B-above-the-staff notes in the last section, Trumpet 2 has a few interesting rhythmic figures in section B; Trombone has 3 or 4 F-above-the-staff notes, and Tuba plays a couple of top-of-the-staff A’s in section D and at the very end. Plus, of course, the piece is syncopated. Completed in 2017, this arrangement runs about 6 minutes, 10 seconds. The Four Vignettes were the first brass piece that I composed just to sound beautiful.I will never forget the look on Dave Kirk’s face when we finished reading it the first time. We were in a room at Rice University where he teaches after a Texas Brass Quintet rehearsal. This was back when both Dave and I were in the band. I asked him and the hornist if they would stay after the rehearsal to read through my new trio. It was these Four Vignettes.When I finished, I KNEW it was mission accomplished because Dave’s face lit up. He had a smile of satisfaction not unlike a smile someone would have after a very satisfying meal.My compositions have been different since then. More like this Four Vignettes piece and less like the experimental stuff I was writing in the 90’s.

Published by Lyons Music Services (A0.767421). Titans: This is a piece inspired by the mythological Titans, who were deposed by the Greek God Zeus, who exiled them and founded the Olympian tradition. The titans were created by the mating of Uranus (Heaven) and Gaea (the Earth). Gaea and Uranus were themselves created from Chaos (the Void). There were many Titans. Cronus, often mistaken for the god of time, was their leader, their brother and the father of their children. Cronus mated with his sister Rhea to produce the gods Zeus, Hades and Poseidon. Cronus was given a prophecy that he would be deposed by his children, so he forced Rhea to give her children to him when they were born whereupon he ate them. She managed to deceive him and hid Zeus, the youngest male child, away. Zeus eventually freed his siblings, by making Cronus vomit to bring them back to the world and thus he became the oldest. The other gods were persuaded to make Zeus their leader and together they deposed Cronus and defeated the Titans in a war (the Titanomachy) that lasted for many years. Zeus and the other gods were not able to kill Cronus, so he exiled him and all of the other Titans in a place called Tartarus, which was part of the underworld, where Cronus would have no access to power of any kind. The music is based mostly on the opening chords, which recur again and again, representing Tartarus and also Cronus and all of his children in one form or another. Melodic material throughout is shaped by the chords and their progressions and I have applied simple transformations – for example, in the last section I have shaped the motifs by applying a snippet of a Fibonacci sequence and overlaying the result in different parts like a canon. I decided to use this because the Fibonacci sequence is representative of nature and the growth of life so it links to Gaea, who represents the creative force. Obviously, Cronus, Gaea, Chaos, Zeus, Hades, Poseidon and Tartarus are all represented here, but so too are Oceanus, Phoebe, Mnemosyne and The Titanomachy (The war of the Olympians against the Titans). The piece finishes with a reprise of the opening chords, which have transformed into a less bleak soundscape, with Cronus and the other Titans safely locked away in Tartarus.This is a difficult and challenging piece demanding a high level of skill from all players. it uses a number of dramatic effects and will stretch any ensemble.I am looking into making a version of this piece for Brass Quintet.Watch te score playing here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2w7dUmJh5k4

This composition was inspired by a cruise of the Mediterranean and visits to Italy, Croatia, and Greece. I was struck by the age and endurance of the structures and the history of the region. The hard work and thought that went into the construction of theses incredible buildings that have survived 1000s of years was amazing. I describe my musical style as neo polyphonic. I write each part as a spate melody or counter melody and the harmonization is what occurs naturally as they entwine. They are usually impressionistic in nature reflecting some action or scene. The First movement is my impression of walking on the ancient roman roads. I found them uneven and I I was wobbling all over the place. To me it sounds like a old wagon with different sized wheels going down the road with other traffic. The second movement. Is inspired by the great Cathedrals you find all through Europe. They are huge open and full of history. As you wonder through them you can feel the history and the devotion in them. The third movement evokes the fast ride of a cavalry unit scouting enemy territory and having a skirmish with and enemy then riding off.. It was inspired by all the history of conflict between the countries of the Mediterranean.

McCartney composed the entire melody in a dream one night in his room, and upon waking, he hurried to a piano and played the tune to avoid forgetting it. McCartney's initial concern was that he had subconsciously plagiarised someone else's work. That’s not a news headline (though it would be quite a good one) but the title of a book by composer Peter Warlock which I read avidly after first encountering the Italian composer in a lecture at the University of Liverpool in the 1980s. We were studying the Italian madrigal, which was not really my thing until our lecturer threw Moro Lasso into the mix. Its opening chords seemed so incongruous – unlike anything we had heard – and are as striking today as they must have been in 1611 when first published in Gesualdo’s 6th Book of Madrigals.More or less immediately after that lecture I arranged the piece for the Seras Brass Quintet which I had helped form. In those days the brass quintet repertoire was limited, and certainly didn’t include anything by Gesualdo!The arrangement really benefits from a church-like acoustic where you can make the most of the dramatic built-in silences. The tuba part lies quite high and is very playable on a trombone if need be. Even to modern ears there are some strange sounds and I trust that all the ‘wrong’ notes are Gesualdo’s rather than mine – do let me know if you think otherwise!

A tippler is one who drinks beer, wine, whiskey or other such spirituous liquids. So a tipplers revel would be a gathering of folks who, in the words of Dolly Parton’s “Two Doors Down,†are “laughing and drinking and having a party.†    This Tipplers Revel is a compilation of traditional drinking songs. It begins and ends with that bane of school trips, faculty sponsors, bus drivers and chaperones, “99 Bottles of Beer on the Wall.†And between those two bookends come “Rye Whiskey,†“Little Brown Jug,†“Landlord, Fill the Flowing Bowl,†“Jimmy Crack Corn,†“Beer, Beer, Beer (An Ode to Charlie Mops, The Man Who Invented Beer),†“Hot Time in the Old Town Tonight,†“Wein, Weib und Gesang [Wine, Woman, and Song],†“Drink to Me Only with Thine Eyes,†“There Is a Tavern in the Town,†“Good Night, Ladies,†“How Dry I Am,†and brief quotes from about a half dozen other melodies associated with quaffing.     For the most part, this arrangement’s time signature is 4/4 and should be played at about 120 BPM. There are, however, two sections of 3/4 time, one of which is marked “tempo di valse,†and the opening and ending few measures should be played rather slowly.     The music should be well within the normal range of the group. Possible exceptions: trumpets play their A above the staff a couple of times.     There are quite a few 16th notes in the allegro sections. (And one could make the argument that at least two sections ought to have been written in 6/8 time. But they weren’t.)     Completed in 2022, performance time runs about 6 minutes, 43 seconds. The basis of this piece was centered around the complex emotions of cats in which we observe in our every day lives. With regards to this piece especially, there were three cats that I based this composition on, and their names are Storm, Zany and Tremor. Each miniature is a representation of a certain type of emotion that each of these cats is known for expressing. The first movement is for my favorite cat, Storm, and is titled, “Precious Storm.†Going back to my earliest memories of writing songs, I re-translated an old tune that I used to sing into a brass quintet miniature and dedicated to him, for he is the best cat. The second miniature is titled, “Mouse on a String,†and is supposed to portray the same energy that one would see from a cat in chase of a toy mouse being constantly propelled around the air from one end of a string, which is one of Storm’s favorite things to do. The third movement is called “Zany the Scaredy-Cat,†which is exactly the type of cat that Zany is. Always fearful and skittish, Zany sneaks around the house to avoid human contact at all costs. The fourth movement is titled “You Stuck, Zany?†This is named after a short video clip in which Zany finds herself stuck in the fireplace and struggling to get out. Once she frees herself, she runs away as fast as she can. The fifth movement is called “Passive-Aggressive Tremor†for the final cat, Tremor. Tremor likes to instigate conflicts with the other cats, but once the tension arises, he backs away, which can also be heard within the intense build ups and anti-climatic drops within the music as well. Finally, the sixth movement is called, “King Tremor,†in which is the boldest sounding of all the pieces, for when it does come to conflict, it is usually Tremor who comes out on top, outsmarting the other two cats.

They are plentiful in Somerset in the West Country of England Though similar in appearance to a gargoyle, a hunky punk is purely decorative and has no other functional purpose whatsoever!! Unlike the gargoyle, which serves to drain water off the roof through its mouth.The theory behind hunky punks and grotesques in general, was that churches were designed to reflect the balance between good and evil, reminding worshippers of the narrow path leading through life. As a result, for every saint or animal that was intended to signify purity and ‘goodness’, there was also an ugly creature to signify evil and ‘badness’. Scored for 2 Trumpets in B flat, Horn in F, 2 Trombones and Tuba. This piece is in concert C minor and begins with a medieval type of fanfare which occurs throughout. What follows is a haunting theme with lots of flattened 5ths and several discords to represent the uncomfortable nature of this statue. The staccato and accent direction in most of the piece gives the impression of walking on eggshells not knowing what lies around the corner! Then a brief legato section of the fanfare appears to provide a calmer atmosphere before eventually returning to the main theme and big ending. Set at Advanced intermediate level although an intermediate player maybe fine with it. However, the youtube link has the full score for you to assess suitability. It is around 4 mins 30 in length and would be a great addition to a repertoire.Price is for the full score and parts.

Inspired by the music of medieval community brass bands, this short piece is a fun folk-like dance in which each of the 5 instruments' lines are viewed as separate and equally important melodies.
