Published by Rick Rangno (A0.954884). This arrangement is based on an old Irish air found in P.W. Joyce's collection Ancient Irish Music published in Dublin in 1873. In Irish folklore the leprehaun is portrayed as a little bearded man, wearing a green coat and hat, and who gets into all kinds of mischief. In general they are solitary creatures who spend their time as cobblers making and mending shoes and have a pot of gold hidden at the end of the rainbow. According to the legends, if you are lucky enough to find a leprehaun and catch him you can exchange his freedom for his treasure. But leprehauns can be a tricky...take your eyes off him for just a second and he'll be gone in a wink leaving you with nothing!This should be played quite boisterously and playfully. It could fit into many types of programs of a light nature. Ideal for St.Patrick's Day or children's concerts.

Published by Sweetwater Brass Press (A0.808680).     First published in Flowers for Children, Volume 2 in 1844, Lydia Maria Child’s poem, The New-England Boy's Song about Thanksgiving Day, describes a sleigh trip to Grandfather’s house to commemorate the national day of thanks and the anticipation of the tasty food that will be consumed in celebration thereof. Why were they in a sleigh in a New England late November? Because the Little Ice Age was still extant in the early 19th Century and there was snow on the ground! Later, maybe in the 1870s, the poem was set to a tune, the composer of which is unknown. As years passed, the words were changed to Grandmother’s house, the song was adapted to a Christmas carol and the title changed to the first line of the poem, Over the River and Through the Woods.

This is a brand new work for brass quartet, using brass band instrumentation: Cornet (doubling Flugelhorn), Tenor Horn, Baritone Horn and Euphonium.It was written as a submission for a new brass quartet (A4 Brass Quartet) comprising musicians from the RNCM, but didn't get selected. Each movement is based on the ensemble's name and contains a pun on A4. Each movement also has fourths involved in it somewhere.The first movement is called Aforethought (because it contains my initial ideas) and it uses a mixture of tonal and quartal harmonies. Melodies and harmony are based around fourths and fifths. It requires all players to be able to flutter-tongue. After the opening fanfare, there is a march-like melody on the cornet, accompanied by the rest of the ensemble. This is followed by a contrasting tune using intervals of a fourth. These ideas are developed over several keys until the first march-like melody returns. The fanfare idea closes the movement.The second movement is called Aforementioned. It takes its ideas from the first movement, but gives them a bluesy style. The cornet player changes to the flugelhorn for this movement which has a beautiful languid melody. The horn shares some of the glory towards the end.The third and final movement is called Aphorhythm (A4 rhythm) and is in 7/8 time. The jerky little melody plays with the pulse of the 7/8 and smoothly morphs into a steadier 'middle 8' section before reprising the opening music.Altogether, this is an enjoyable and exciting piece for brass quartet..

Published by Sweetwater Brass Press (A0.808697).   Henry Alford (1810–1871), Church of England cleric and man of many talents, wrote the words for Come, Ye Thankful People, Come in 1844. Fourteen years later, Alford’s hymn was set to a melody composed by George J. Elvey (1816–1893). Elvey had named the tune St. George’s, Windsor after the chapel in Windsor, England, where he was organist. The first verse of the hymn rejoices in the harvest and calls for celebrants to Come to God's own temple, come; raise the song of harvest home! As such, the hymn gained popularity in the United States as a celebration of Thanksgiving.  In keeping with the song’s celebratory and triumphal nature, this arrangement uses a fanfare as the recurring motif. The fanfare opens the piece, followed by a rejoicing, exultant first statement of the melody. In the second statement, the fanfare figure returns and forms the structure for the section. The third statement is styled as a kind of rondo; the fourth and last, grandioso. The fourth statement also changes key twice--F to B-flat, then to E-flat--includes a walking bass part and ends with, again, the fanfare. The piece should be played Allegro moderato, about 120 bpm, and there are no really tricky rhythmic figures. Most notes are well within the normal range of the five instruments-Trombone’s highest are a couple of high F notes; Trumpet 1, high A notes. So most players will have little or no trouble.   This arrangement was completed in 2019, and performance time runs about 3 minutes, 44 seconds. Published by Sweetwater Brass Press (A0.808698). Brandon Thomas’ three-act farce, Charley’s Aunt, opened in London in 1892 and was a huge success. It has since been performed and adapted many times. One such adaptation was Where’s Charley? a 1948 Broadway version with music and lyrics by Frank Loesser. Ray Bolger played the starring role as Charley, and its most memorable number was the second act’s Once In Love With Amy. Every night Bolger would perform the number, then turn to the audience and invite them to sing along with him. They loved it, and Bolger would continue to perform it as his signature act for years even after the play closed. The rhythmic and melodic nature of Once In Love With Amy seems to lend itself to performance by a brass group. And that’s what inspired this arrangement. All play the eight-measure introduction, while the verse-I caught you, sir, having a look at her as she went strolling by-features Trumpets, Horn and Trombone playing melody while tuba provides tempo and pulse. Then comes the familiar chorus, Once in love with Amy, always in love with Amy. The first time through, Tuba plays melody with the other instruments providing accompaniment. On the second time through, for the first half, Trombone and Tuba play an intricate counterpoint while Trumpets and Horn do a rather smooth swing version of the melody; for the second half, Trombone and Tuba take the melody and Trumpets provide the counterpoint. Then comes the surprise ending in which all three participate. Most players will have little trouble. The arrangement consists of 77 measures in 4/4 time. There are several tempo changes; the fastest is quarter note equals 108. Key signature is G, changing to F at measure 44. All notes for should be within normal playing range. Sweetwater Brass Press also offers a similar version of Once In Love With Amy arranged for tuba trio. This arrangement was completed in 2020, and performance time runs about 2 minutes, 58 seconds. Published by Sweetwater Brass Press (A0.808685).   What is a Rumpus? Most definitions include words such as noisy disturbance, commotion and uproar. Sort of like the sounds from a group of neighborhood children in the days before play dates, private lessons and organized kids’ sports. These sounds were part and parcel of the games they played, games that originated years, even centuries, before and involved high energy levels and top-of-their-voices counting, chanting or singing (with an occasional Nyah-nyah nyah-nyah nyah nyah thrown in for good measure!). Rowdy and raucous, indeed!  This composition is one that will entertain both adults (who, after all, are just grown-up children!) and youngsters. Like children at play, it races right along. In one 6-minute work, it incorporates tunes of eleven children’s game and campfire songs: Michael Finnegan; Ring a Ring o’ Roses; Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star; London Bridge; Hickory Dickory Dock; Three Blind Mice; John Jacob Jingleheimer Schmidt; My Pony Boy; Old MacDonald Had A Farm; The Farmer in the Dell and Bingo. And, again, like children at play, there is fun, humor and a surprise at every turn.  A Rowdy, Raucous Rumpus is a hoot to play. At a cut-time tempo of 132 and with 14(!) changes of key, it keeps all five musicians on their toes. And busy: on the Tuba part, there are V.S. (turn the page quickly) indications on the bottom of 6 of the 8 pages, 5 for Trombone and Horn in F, 3 for Trumpet 2, and 2 for Trumpet 1. In Bingo, the last tune, the group intermittently stops playing and claps or foot-taps loudly (which is a good spot for audience participation!). On the audio clip, this is indicated with a click (actually, a tambourine sound).  There are a few high notes scattered throughout. Trumpet plays B above its staff once and A a number of times. Published by Richard Jones (A0.1026133). Until the 1970s the Minuet in G Major was attributed to the great Johann Sebastian Bach. For centuries musicologists believed it was an original composition as it was a part of the manuscript notebook compiled by Bach and his wife Anna Magdalena Bach, in 1725.Petzold was born in Konigstein, Germany, in 1677 and little is known about his exact birth date. Relatively few pieces ofhis have survived the centuries, but the inclusion of his two minuets in the Anna Magdalena Notebook, remain the most famous of these.The theme to the Minuet in G was used in 1966 by the American pop group The Toys, in their song 'A Lover's Concerto'.In this arrangement I have syncopated the theme and accompanying parts to create a jazz feel. From letter A the theme appears in the cornet and euphonium lines and then at letter B the theme is transferred to the horn section. Whilst the theme is in the horn section there is a counter riff in the baritones and trombones, and a simple jazz syncopation in the cornets. At C the key changes to the sub-dominant key of C and the back row cornets get the tune in a simple but syncopated form whilst a flowing counter melody continues in the lower instruments. Then at D the euphoniums, baritones and basses have their chance and the syncopation appears in the horns and interjections in the cornets. After the D.S the the piece goes to the Coda, which hasthe tune split between each of the sections of the band with a fortissimo climax.
