It seems that I grew up in an era of epic storytelling! In the last century especially, stories of space exploration and adventure have captivated the world’s attention. Another thing it seems, is that the most popular of these stories, in the film medium at least, always have incredible French horn lines. I was blessed to go to school where incredible horn players were abundant, and I made friends with as many of them as I could. This piece is meant to be a fun exercise for the imagination: what happens during the maiden voyage to the stars? This piece, Fables, Fiction and Folklore, is built on a mode and musical figure that can be transposed by a tritone while maintaining every note in the scale. In other words, whether it’s played in G or C#, the exact same notes are used. This mirroring of the musical figure is meant to symbolize how we see ourselves. We look in the mirror and see something that may look like us but is, in fact, as far away from reality as possible. We look past all the good and beautiful things in ourselves and our worlds while only seeing our faults and blemishes. On the other hand, when we look at others, we see idealized versions. We think about them as if they are fictionalized characters in a story. Let’s focus on the positive when we look at ourselves and our lives and forgive the imperfections. We’re the heroes of our personal folktale.

Sweetwater Brass Press #6687707. Published by Sweetwater Brass Press (A0.808713).     Published in 1927, Milton Ager composed this song for his daughter Shana, born two years earlier. As an adult, Shana Ager Alexander went on to become a noted journalist and also, in the late 1970s, the liberal half of 60 Minutes’ Point-Counterpoint verbal duels with conservative James J. Kilpatrick! Ain’t She Sweet, in the meantime, proved to be a much performed number during the first half of the 20th Century. It became a standard and was recorded by literally scores of artists. To many people, this song symbolized the Jazz Age, the Roaring Twenties, and this arrangement reflects that period’s mood of fast-pace, fun and optimism.

?The Twentieth CenturyFox Trademark? fanfare was written in 1933 by Alfred Newman, who was the headof Fox's music department (1940 to 1960). By the 1970s, the fanfare (as well asthe Twentieth Century Fox logo) had been phased out of their films. However,George Lucas liked it so much that he insisted it be used for his Star Warsfilms, making the logo and fanfare a staple of the cinematic experience.
John Williams hassaid that Star Wars?s Main Title music was meant to be an extension of thisfanfare, writing it in the same key as Newman?s fanfare and becoming part andparcel of the scores to Star Wars (with Sony including it on each of the soundtracks).
