Versatile Brass 'Old Time Favourites' CollectionThis is another popular song from the WW2 era, although it was written a few years before for a film of the same title.Sing As We Go is a 1934 British musical film starring Gracie Fields, John Loder and Stanley Holloway. The script was written by Gordon Wellesley and J. B. Priestley.Considered by many to be British music hall star Gracie Fields' finest vehicle, this film was written for her by leading novelist J.B. Priestley. In this morale-boosting depression movie, set in the industrial north of England, Fields stars as a resourceful, determined working class heroine, laid off from her job in a clothing mill, who has to seek work in the seaside resort of Blackpool. This gives her the opportunity both to fall into many misadventures and, of course, to sing.The decision to film on location brings the film a life and immediacy all too absent from most films of the period. The film provides us with a snapshot of life in a seaside resort in the 1930s. The final scene of the millworkers returning to the re-opened mill while Fields leads them in the rousing title song has become an almost iconic film cliché.This is a simple arrangement of the title song with the lead line on solo Cornet. There is a vocal part included if required.

The varying time signatures in the first half of the piece didn’t seem to cause any issues in her arriving at the alter safely and we are still happily married after 30 years!It can, of course, be used in any setting and if my suggested tempo seems a little on the quick side I’ll blame that on the length of the church nave. Pick a tempo which suits your situation and try to capture a majestic feel.

The woman who started the singing told The Guardian, I love Manchester, and Oasis is part of my childhood. This is the biggest tune from the Spanish Bull ring also adopted in Mexico. Played by many many world famous trumpeters like Mendez, Paco, Arturo on Youtube with John Williams conducting. As you know, big florid solo with much embellishing on repeat. My idea to have opposing cornets at either side of the stage taking the solo then on 2nd time using technical brinkmanship to out-do each other on the embellishing. You need two very good soloists.

I wrote the Fanfare and Scherzo for this quintet in 1979 using an ink pen and manuscript paper the old-fashioned way. These two movements were premiered by The Palos Verdes Brass Quintet that year and then were largely forgotten as I started working in non-musical areas the next year.After I retired, I ran across them while cleaning out my desk and offered them to the current PVSB Brass Quintet (none of whom were in the original group) and they graciously played them again. I always intended to write two more movements and finally did it 40 years later.The Lullaby calls for flügelhorns and has a vocal part. It is not intended to be sung necessarily but for the lyrics to provide a mood for this dark piece, which is probably best suited for Eddie Munster or Lio. I have sort of a warped sense of humor. The Finale is more serious, but not that much. Aside from the Scherzo the piece is not too difficult. The duration is about 12 minutes.

Published by Warren J Wernick (A0.948762). Blackadder is a series of four BBC One pseudohistorical British sitcoms, plus several one-off installments, which originally aired from 1983–1989. All television episodes starred Rowan Atkinson as the antihero Edmund Blackadder and Tony Robinson as Blackadder's dogsbody, Baldrick. Each series was set in a different historical period, with the two protagonists accompanied by different characters, though several reappear in one series or another, e.g., Melchett (Stephen Fry) and Lord Flashheart (Rik Mayall). The theme song is composed by Howard Goodall, an English composer of musicals, choral music and music for television. He also presents music-based programs for television and radio, for which he has won many awards. In May 2008, he was named as a presenter and Composer-in-Residence with the UK radio channel Classic FM. In May 2009, he was named Composer of the Year at the Classic BRIT Awards. Goodall said of the Theme, They asked me if I would have a go at the tune. With all of these things, although I do come up with my own ideas, you don't really come up with a good one unless you talk it through with them and the vision they've got. It was quite obvious, the historical approach they were going for. What's interesting is that the first series, the medieval one with 'Richard the Fourth', was much more filmic and much more historical. That's why we ended up with that tune. Whereas had the first series been the Elizabethan one, the theme would have been slightly gentler, less heroic. .

A few years ago my wife and I were invited to attend a surprise 90th birthday party for the legendary brass band conductor James Scott. The party was held at Uppermill golf course in the heart of Saddleworth. Anyone familiar with the annual brass band festival that is the Whit Friday March contests will be familiar with the area and perhaps also with its somewhat damp climate. My wife and I decided that we would make a mini-break out of it and took our touring caravan to stay on a small farm site near Freisland (another Whit Friday venue). the weather was as predicted and it rained... and it rained... and then it rained some more to the extent that we had a family of ducks swimming around outside our caravan door. TV, and Internet connection in Saddleworth, in a caravan in the rain is virtually non-existent so we were well and truly stuck. We ventured out into nearby town of Oldham and eventually found a bookshop. Browsing through the music section I stumbled across a piano reduction of the show score to Mary Poppins. Contained in the score was a 32 bar, simple piano reduction of Step in Time... The rest, as they say, is history... This arrangement is not such a simple reduction. There are frequent changes of key, and time signatures throughout, but it has proven to be great fun to play and rehearse. Particularly with bands that are not the best 'sight readers'...

Published by Phillip Lawrence (A0.883769). I recently published Romeo & Juliet Tchiakovsky which is a big bridge musically technically and and needs a big chunk of stamina. Before I did this there was another work on my mind of an opposite challenge for band in the orch rep dep.An impressionist work of great delicacy, subtle beyond belief, the fabric is fragile like lace with a feeling of transparency and lucidity and must move as if played by one person, colour and timbre, light, lithe, the orchestration a masterpiece, utilising fx from all dep’s often at ppp and most difficult to replicate at all for brass band.And, it’s a fair cop! The purists outsiders will say that this is the last piece that should be arranged for a brass band. So why arrange the greatest impressionist work ever written, for Brass Band?Well, because it’s there, and I believe it can be played with the above requirements by band. The work was written in the summer of 1894, and finished in the September. Three months later in December the Societe Nationale de Musique conducted by Gustave Doret with Marcel Moyse playing the opening flute solo gave the first performance. The Queen's Gambit is a miniseries that Netflix released in October 2020, and it quickly became one of their most-watched shows around the world.
Show aside, it has one of the most exciting musical scores, with the title number being my absolute favorite of the entire soundtrack, written by Carlos Rafael Rivera.
Scored for 2 trumpets, 2 french horns, 2 trombones, and 2 tubas. There are 2-part divisis here and there in all parts except the 2nd tuba.
Geared for the more advanced groups, this piece is on fire from start to finish. At under 2 minutes, you and your choir will have quite the workout. This would be a great opener or closer for your concerts.
