Bridges to the SkyPittsburgh Rhapsody (2008) for brass band was commissioned by the River City BrassBand, Denis Colwell, music director, in celebration of the 250th anniversary of thecity of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, with support from the Pittsburgh 250 CommunityConnections Committee.The first movement, Tributaries, is inspired by Pittsburgh as a city of three rivers andparticularly the confluence of two rivers to form one. Throughout the movementthere are a number of places where two ideas converge to become one. Opening witha fanfare-like gesture, the music then becomes more flowing before building up againto a climax.The second movement, Memorial Song, is a lyrical duet for flugelhorn and euphonium.The movement was not conceived as a specific memorial, but its lyrical and elegiacmood represents the many memorials that we all celebrate, both personal andcorporate.The third movement, Bridges to the Sky, celebrates Pittsburgh as a city of bridges. Meditation for Trombone (Dedicated to Dad) By Richard Jones The history of the brass band movement has significant contributions, most notably from individuals or families, but today the most integral has to be the Salvation Army. Anybody who takes a passing interest in their activities will see the strength of their music and the messages that they convey. In its history there have been many different styles of composition that have been popular with Salvationist composers and one of these are the meditations. In days gone past these meditiations would have been sent out in a package of other arrangements or compositions for bandmasters to peruse and then, should they wish, purchase. Meditations, in their contexts, are either sung or composed for an instrument with piano or band accompaniment. Today, meditations don't need a specific religious basis, but their style remains consistent. I have written this as a dedication to my dad who remains a great light in my life. .

Published by Richard Jones (A0.1026133). Until the 1970s the Minuet in G Major was attributed to the great Johann Sebastian Bach. For centuries musicologists believed it was an original composition as it was a part of the manuscript notebook compiled by Bach and his wife Anna Magdalena Bach, in 1725.Petzold was born in Konigstein, Germany, in 1677 and little is known about his exact birth date. Relatively few pieces ofhis have survived the centuries, but the inclusion of his two minuets in the Anna Magdalena Notebook, remain the most famous of these.The theme to the Minuet in G was used in 1966 by the American pop group The Toys, in their song 'A Lover's Concerto'.In this arrangement I have syncopated the theme and accompanying parts to create a jazz feel. From letter A the theme appears in the cornet and euphonium lines and then at letter B the theme is transferred to the horn section. Whilst the theme is in the horn section there is a counter riff in the baritones and trombones, and a simple jazz syncopation in the cornets. At C the key changes to the sub-dominant key of C and the back row cornets get the tune in a simple but syncopated form whilst a flowing counter melody continues in the lower instruments. Then at D the euphoniums, baritones and basses have their chance and the syncopation appears in the horns and interjections in the cornets. After the D.S the the piece goes to the Coda, which hasthe tune split between each of the sections of the band with a fortissimo climax.

I've added the original 'Amen' ending as I think it finishes the piece nicely. .

Himan Lane was written for the City of Bristol Brass Band in memory of one of it's supporters, Ian Hamlen. The title is an anagram of his name. His favourite piece of music was Pictures At An Exhibition, particularly The Great Gate of Kiev. This piece is loosely based on this last movement and the Promenade. It is firmly placed in the British Brass Band 19th Century tradition, and would make a wonderful addition to any concert. I do hope you enjoy playing it, or even just listening to the rendition on SMP.

They are a predominant feature of the landscape on Oman and Muscat and are roughly 50-100 km inland from the Gulf of Oman. The literal translation from Arabic into English means 'The Rock' or The Stone'.

Bella Ciao (Goodbye Beautiful) is an Italian protest folk song from the late 19th century, originally sung by the seasonal female rice paddy workers in Northern Italy in protest to the harsh working conditions. The song was modified and adopted as an anthem of the Italian resistance movement by the partisans who opposed the Nazi occupiers between 1943 and 1945. Versions of Bella Ciao continue to be sung worldwide as hymns of freedom and resistance. Written during the Covid -19 Pandemic, Variations on “Bella Ciao’ was inspired by the scenes of music- making by Italian musicians during the darkest days of the pandemic. From rooftops, balconies and deserted piazzas, people continued to express themselves in testaments to the human spirit. This arrangement follows the standard British Brass Band format and includes full set of parts.
