Samuels (A0.828655). 2020 SMP Press Composition Contest Entry for the Popular instrumental ensemble category: This is an arrangement for brass quintet, snare drum and cymbal(s) of the opening fanfare to Sylvester Stallone's first ROCKY movie. It may also be performed by a double/triple brass quintet, a larger brass ensemble, or the brass section of a concert band/orchestra, with percussion. For the sake of simplicity, the various, advanced cadenzas near the end of the original fanfare have been omitted. The duration is just under 2 minutes.(According to Wikipedia: The film, made on a budget of just over $1 million, was a sleeper hit; it earned $225 million in global box office receipts, becoming the highest-grossing film of 1976... Among other accolades, it went on to receive ten Academy Award nominations, winning three, including Best Picture.)

This is a brand new work for brass quartet, using brass band instrumentation: Cornet (doubling Flugelhorn), Tenor Horn, Baritone Horn and Euphonium.It was written as a submission for a new brass quartet (A4 Brass Quartet) comprising musicians from the RNCM, but didn't get selected. Each movement is based on the ensemble's name and contains a pun on A4. Each movement also has fourths involved in it somewhere.The first movement is called Aforethought (because it contains my initial ideas) and it uses a mixture of tonal and quartal harmonies. Melodies and harmony are based around fourths and fifths. It requires all players to be able to flutter-tongue. After the opening fanfare, there is a march-like melody on the cornet, accompanied by the rest of the ensemble. This is followed by a contrasting tune using intervals of a fourth. These ideas are developed over several keys until the first march-like melody returns. The fanfare idea closes the movement.The second movement is called Aforementioned. It takes its ideas from the first movement, but gives them a bluesy style. The cornet player changes to the flugelhorn for this movement which has a beautiful languid melody. The horn shares some of the glory towards the end.The third and final movement is called Aphorhythm (A4 rhythm) and is in 7/8 time. The jerky little melody plays with the pulse of the 7/8 and smoothly morphs into a steadier 'middle 8' section before reprising the opening music.Altogether, this is an enjoyable and exciting piece for brass quartet..

Bridges to the SkyPittsburgh Rhapsody (2008) for brass band was commissioned by the River City BrassBand, Denis Colwell, music director, in celebration of the 250th anniversary of thecity of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, with support from the Pittsburgh 250 CommunityConnections Committee.The first movement, Tributaries, is inspired by Pittsburgh as a city of three rivers andparticularly the confluence of two rivers to form one. Throughout the movementthere are a number of places where two ideas converge to become one. Opening witha fanfare-like gesture, the music then becomes more flowing before building up againto a climax.The second movement, Memorial Song, is a lyrical duet for flugelhorn and euphonium.The movement was not conceived as a specific memorial, but its lyrical and elegiacmood represents the many memorials that we all celebrate, both personal andcorporate.The third movement, Bridges to the Sky, celebrates Pittsburgh as a city of bridges. This is the fantastic fanfares and march which opens the Star Trek: Next Generation television series, which stared Sir Patrick Stewart as Jean-Luc Picard, who, on board the star ship Enterprise, boldly went where none had gone before. The music was composed by Jerry Goldsmith, who had also written the music for The Omen, Alien, Rambo and Air Force One. Goldsmith will also responsible for on of the most well known pieces in films, the Universal Studios Fanfare.
