He and Edvard Grieg wanted to create a Norwegian musical expression and a Norwegian music based on Norwegian folk music traditions. However, as is well known, Nordraak’s life ended abruptly, he became infected with tuberculosis, and died a painful death on a beautiful May day in Berlin in 1866. This work is dedicated to Rikard Nordraak's memory.

The script was written by Gordon Wellesley and J. B. Priestley.Considered by many to be British music hall star Gracie Fields' finest vehicle, this film was written for her by leading novelist J.B. Priestley. In this morale-boosting depression movie, set in the industrial north of England, Fields stars as a resourceful, determined working class heroine, laid off from her job in a clothing mill, who has to seek work in the seaside resort of Blackpool. This gives her the opportunity both to fall into many misadventures and, of course, to sing.The decision to film on location brings the film a life and immediacy all too absent from most films of the period. The film provides us with a snapshot of life in a seaside resort in the 1930s. The final scene of the millworkers returning to the re-opened mill while Fields leads them in the rousing title song has become an almost iconic film cliché.This is a simple arrangement of the title song with the lead line on solo Cornet. Check them out, they're cheaper and support me more than the pennies I get from SMP.In it's original key, this arrangement sits up pretty high for a couple of the horns, so I included a 2nd version that is a whole step down and is a little more comfortable to play. The trade-off is that horn 4 is mostly in bass clef in the lower pitched version. Choose whichever one you like though!The Four Seasons makes for great chamber music though. It's melodic, harmonic, tasty stuff. This one is short but sweet. I hope you enjoy it!

This composition was inspired by a cruise of the Mediterranean and visits to Italy, Croatia, and Greece. I was struck by the age and endurance of the structures and the history of the region. The hard work and thought that went into the construction of theses incredible buildings that have survived 1000s of years was amazing. I describe my musical style as neo polyphonic. I write each part as a spate melody or counter melody and the harmonization is what occurs naturally as they entwine. They are usually impressionistic in nature reflecting some action or scene. The First movement is my impression of walking on the ancient roman roads. I found them uneven and I I was wobbling all over the place. To me it sounds like a old wagon with different sized wheels going down the road with other traffic. The second movement. Is inspired by the great Cathedrals you find all through Europe. They are huge open and full of history. As you wonder through them you can feel the history and the devotion in them. The third movement evokes the fast ride of a cavalry unit scouting enemy territory and having a skirmish with and enemy then riding off.. It was inspired by all the history of conflict between the countries of the Mediterranean.

The opening section is slow, with gentle syncopation and sophisticated harmonies including very controlled dissonances to heighten the emotion and tension of the music. This is then followed by a riotous fast section with the modal feeling of a Scottish reel, with everyone getting a piece of the action. Frequent modulations and lively syncopations drive this music forward - you can almost hear the dancers stamp the floor! At the end of this section the syncopations wind down and the music returns to the material from the start of the piece, before winding down and relaxing even further to an almost mournful conclusion. The slower sections will require sensitive and musical playing and direction, whilst the fast section requires nimble fingers and tongues to get the best from the music. Suitable for players of Grade 6 upwards.

Labour and Love (1913) by Percy E. Fletcher was originally scored for a British brass band. This included an Eb soprano cornet, 4 Bb cornet parts (with a fluegel horn double in one part), 4 Eb tenor horn parts, 2 Bb baritone parts, euphonium, 2 tenor trombone parts, bass trombone, an Eb bass part and a Bb bass part. All the parts excepting the trombones were written in treble clef. This arrangement, while attempting to preserve the original style and flavor, has been adapted for the contemporary American brass ensemble.
