Yesterday is a song by English rock band the Beatles written by Paul McCartney (credited to Lennon–McCartney) and first released on the album Help! in the United Kingdom in August 1965. McCartney composed the entire melody in a dream one night in his room, and upon waking, he hurried to a piano and played the tune to avoid forgetting it. McCartney's initial concern was that he had subconsciously plagiarised someone else's work. As he put it, For about a month I went round to people in the music business and asked them whether they had ever heard it before. Eventually it became like handing something in to the police. I thought if no one claimed it after a few weeks then I could have it. I have arranged the melody here as a solo trombone feature which has been successfully performed in concert many times.

Sweetwater Brass Press #4331333. Published by Sweetwater Brass Press (A0.808689). William Benton Overstreet did it all-played piano, wrote songs, led bands. Probably the accomplishment for which he’s most remembered today is his composing of There’ll Be Some Changes Made, published in 1921. Billy Higgins, popular stage comedian, wrote the lyrics, and Ethel Waters, then just 24, recorded the song on the Black Swan label. The disc quickly achieved hit status, and the song has remained popular across multiple musical platform styles ever since. This arrangement is a happy, fun piece and includes some of the great (and familiar) Vaudeville-style ornaments and phrases. It’s a real toe-tapper. For the most part this arrangement is up-tempo, about 140 bpm. It does slow to 92 at the first iteration of the verse and again for the final ¬6 measures of the piece. Time signature is 4/4 except for measure 89, which is 6/4. The key is B-flat throughout, and the melody weaves among all instruments. Trumpet 1 plays B5 (B-flat trumpet’s high C) briefly at measures 4 and 35 and for two measures at the very end of the piece. Tuba plays G3 briefly several times in measures 90-93. Other than that, there are no exceptionally out-of-normal-range notes. Trumpets 1 and 2 may wish to double-tongue at measure 64. A few years ago my wife and I were invited to attend a surprise 90th birthday party for the legendary brass band conductor James Scott. The party was held at Uppermill golf course in the heart of Saddleworth. Anyone familiar with the annual brass band festival that is the Whit Friday March contests will be familiar with the area and perhaps also with its somewhat damp climate. My wife and I decided that we would make a mini-break out of it and took our touring caravan to stay on a small farm site near Freisland (another Whit Friday venue). the weather was as predicted and it rained... and it rained... and then it rained some more to the extent that we had a family of ducks swimming around outside our caravan door. TV, and Internet connection in Saddleworth, in a caravan in the rain is virtually non-existent so we were well and truly stuck. We ventured out into nearby town of Oldham and eventually found a bookshop. Browsing through the music section I stumbled across a piano reduction of the show score to Mary Poppins. Contained in the score was a 32 bar, simple piano reduction of Step in Time... The rest, as they say, is history... This arrangement is not such a simple reduction. There are frequent changes of key, and time signatures throughout, but it has proven to be great fun to play and rehearse. Particularly with bands that are not the best 'sight readers'...

British composer Alexander Robert Reinagle wrote this melody about 1836 and named it after the church where he was organist, Oxford's St. Peter-in-the-East. First published as a musical setting for Psalm 118, it was adapted to John Newton’s How Sweet the Name of Jesus Sounds in 1861 and then to the hymn by John Oxenham (William A. Dunkerley), In Christ There Is No East or West, in the early 20th Century. While some sources specify that the St. Peter melody should be played without any festive fanfares, this brass quintet version does contain a few ceremonial flourishes. Most players will have little or no difficulty with this piece. The andante moderato tempo should be interpreted as somewhere in the vicinity of quarter note = 92. Most of the rhythm patterns involve quarter and eighth notes, with a few 16th-note passages scattered throughout. Trumpet 1’s highest note is its high A; tuba’s lowest is G below the staff. Otherwise, the music remains well within the normal playing range of all instruments. This arrangement was completed in 2019, and performance time runs about 4 minutes, 13 seconds. The two upper voices often intertwine in intricate contrapuntal melodies, while the basso continuo provides harmonic support. The Trio Sonatas are considered to be among the most important and influential works of the Baroque era, and they continue to be widely performed and studied today.The Bach Trio Sonatas have been successfully transcribed for a variety of ensembles, including wind, string, and brass ensembles. The parts are easily divided among a variety of wind instruments, including flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, and saxophone. In these transcriptions, the original material is retained, but often with some additional orchestration or embellishment. These transcriptions often emphasize the polyphonic texture of the original works, creating a rich soundscape.  The Sonatas have also been successfully adapted for a variety of string ensembles. That’s not a news headline (though it would be quite a good one) but the title of a book by composer Peter Warlock which I read avidly after first encountering the Italian composer in a lecture at the University of Liverpool in the 1980s. We were studying the Italian madrigal, which was not really my thing until our lecturer threw Moro Lasso into the mix. Its opening chords seemed so incongruous – unlike anything we had heard – and are as striking today as they must have been in 1611 when first published in Gesualdo’s 6th Book of Madrigals.More or less immediately after that lecture I arranged the piece for the Seras Brass Quintet which I had helped form. In those days the brass quintet repertoire was limited, and certainly didn’t include anything by Gesualdo!The arrangement really benefits from a church-like acoustic where you can make the most of the dramatic built-in silences. The tuba part lies quite high and is very playable on a trombone if need be. Even to modern ears there are some strange sounds and I trust that all the ‘wrong’ notes are Gesualdo’s rather than mine – do let me know if you think otherwise!

Published by Sweetwater Brass Press (A0.808693).   On a visit to the Isle of Wight, British composer Edward George White came across an ancient steam locomotive bearing the sobriquet Puffing Billy. Inspired, White wrote the similarly titled Puffin’ Billy in 1952. The tune was recorded by a group labeled Melodi Light Orchestra and was included in the Chappell Recorded Music Library, a collection of tunes that could be used as incidental music in various types of productions. Both British and U.S. producers made use of the library; two stand out. One was BBC’s Children’s Favourites, which adopted Puffin’ Billy as theme music in 1952 and continued its use for 14 years. The second was Captain Kangaroo, a new 8 a.m. weekday children’s program launched by CBS-TV in October 1955 starring Bob Keeshan as the title character. Each episode opened and closed with Puffin’ Billy and would do so until 1974, making it White’s most recognizable composition.    This brass quintet version follows the 1952 Melodi Light Orchestra recording pretty closely. It retains the key signatures of the original-G to B-flat, then back to G-and the tempo (cut time; half note = 112). Trumpets’ highest note is their A above the staff; trombone has one F above the staff. Tuba’s very last note is G below the staff. The rest is pretty much within normal playing range. Trumpets get somewhat of a workout with chromatic runs in sections E and F. Most will find this an easy piece to play.  This arrangement was completed in 2019, and performance time runs about 2 minutes, 54 seconds. Based on Grieg's famous orchestral movement from 'Peer Gynt Suite no.1', this arrangement is a contemporary twist on an old classic and designed to appeal to young audiences and musicians. It was originally written for Sæbø Skulemusikklag, Norway, for World Brass Day 2017. The performance was recorded as representation of Norwegian culture and uploaded to Youtube in a shared playlist alongside others from around the globe*. The arrangement begins in a similar creepy manner to the original, tip-toeing in and gradually building up to a frightening frenzy. Something of a surprise is in store for the audience after a familiar opening however; a dubstep/drum n bass twist drops in before the melody rejoins in a new fashion, leading on to solo moments for drum kit and timpani. Elements of the original orchestration are again infused into the repeated refrain to intensify the music towards a dramatic final close.Note to conductors:Difficult solo tuba parts are a feature, but a simplified version is also supplied for less advanced players.The soprano cornet, 2nd horn and 2nd baritone parts are supplementary and can be omitted without problem. Published by KVAMusic Edition (A0.768515). Victor Ewald 27 November 1860 - 16 April 1935 Ewald was a Russian composer of music, mainly for conical brass instruments. He was born in Saint Petersburg and died in Leningrad. He also collected and published Russian folk songs. Ewald’s professional life, like that of many of his musical contemporaries, was in an entirely different field; that of a civil engineer, in which he excelled, being appointed in 1900 as professor and manager of the Faculty of Construction Materials at the Institute of Civil Engineers. Brass players however are indebted to him for something very different – a series of quintets which have become a staple of the repertoire and which represent almost the only, and certainly the most extended examples of original literature in the Romantic style. Ewald’s formal musical training began in 1872 when he enrolled at the St Petersburg Conservatory at the age of twelve. Founded in 1861 by Anton Rubenstein, this institution was the first of its kind in Russia and it was here that Ewald received lessons in cornet, piano, horn, cello, harmony and composition.As an adult he worked alongside fellow musical nationalists known collectively as the Mighty Handful-Borodin, Mily Balakirev, CeÌsar Cui, Modest Mussorgsky and the most famous of all, Nicolai Rimsky-Korsakov. All of these men had day jobs in non-musical fields. Ewald’s contributions as a composer reflected an abiding love for brass instruments for which he wrote his quintets scored originally for two cornets, alto horn, baritone horn and tuba. I've edited these four quartets using Ewald's original instrumentation, but there are also separate substitute parts for the modern brass quintet (2 trumpets, horn in F, trombone and tuba).

Published by KVAMusic Edition (A0.768517). Victor Ewald 27 November 1860 - 16 April 1935 Ewald was a Russian composer of music, mainly for conical brass instruments. He was born in Saint Petersburg and died in Leningrad. He also collected and published Russian folk songs. Ewald’s professional life, like that of many of his musical contemporaries, was in an entirely different field; that of a civil engineer, in which he excelled, being appointed in 1900 as professor and manager of the Faculty of Construction Materials at the Institute of Civil Engineers. Brass players however are indebted to him for something very different – a series of quintets which have become a staple of the repertoire and which represent almost the only, and certainly the most extended examples of original literature in the Romantic style. Ewald’s formal musical training began in 1872 when he enrolled at the St Petersburg Conservatory at the age of twelve. Founded in 1861 by Anton Rubenstein, this institution was the first of its kind in Russia and it was here that Ewald received lessons in cornet, piano, horn, cello, harmony and composition.As an adult he worked alongside fellow musical nationalists known collectively as the Mighty Handful-Borodin, Mily Balakirev, CeÌsar Cui, Modest Mussorgsky and the most famous of all, Nicolai Rimsky-Korsakov. All of these men had day jobs in non-musical fields. Ewald’s contributions as a composer reflected an abiding love for brass instruments for which he wrote his quintets scored originally for two cornets, alto horn, baritone horn and tuba. I've edited these four quartets using Ewald's original instrumentation, but there are also separate substitute parts for the modern brass quintet (2 trumpets, horn in F, trombone and tuba).

Sweetwater Brass Press #4111581. Published by Sweetwater Brass Press (A0.808688). Henry Clay Work, Civil War era song writer and abolitionist, composed Kingdom Coming in 1862. Chicago’s Root & Cady published it in April of that year, Christy’s Minstrels premiered it and it became enormously popular. The lyrics to Kingdom Coming, also known as The Year of Jubilo, were written as though slaves in the Confederacy were celebrating their upcoming freedom. However, the song was actually released eight months before President Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation. Interestingly, Kingdom Coming also gained popularity in the South. A Southern edition was published in August in 1864, and the song remained a favorite in the former Confederacy for some years. Kingdom Coming has been used as theme or background music in a number of film, television and radio settings. Almost certainly its most popular iteration in modern times was the Sauter-Finegan Orchestra’s 1952 recording under the title Doodletown Fifers. This arrangement is a show-off piece for each member of the quintet. It moves along at a brisk pace of about 108, begins in the key of C and changes to A-flat, then B-flat. The first time through the melody, all instruments perform ensemble. Each succeeding repetition features an instrumentalist, starting with tuba and working up to Trumpet 1. The piece ends with another ensemble version. There are no exceptionally out-of-normal-playing-range notes: Trumpets 1 and 2 both play their B-flat below the scale several times, and Trumpet 2 plays G below the scale; Horn in F also plays its G below the scale; Trombone’s range is G at the bottom of the scale to D above the scale; Tuba’s lowest note is A-flat below the scale. Trumpet 1 will probably triple tongue its repetition of the melody, and some triple tonguing may be called for near the end of the piece for Trumpets 1 and 2 and Trombone. Sweetwater Brass Press #4819845. Published by Sweetwater Brass Press (A0.808695).   Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov composed his third opera, The Snow Maiden, during the period 1880-1881. Based on Alexander Ostrovsky’s play of the same name, The Snow Maiden uses fairy-tale characters to portray the opposing forces of nature, winter versus summer. Act 3 contains the Dance of the Skomorokhi. Skomorokhi were traveling performers in old Russia and, in connection with this composition, the term is usually translated as tumblers or clowns. Rimsky-Korsakov also included this selection as one of four movements he compiled into a concert suite based on the opera. Dance of the Tumblers has become one of his most frequently performed and best known pieces.  Light and uplifting, Dance of the Tumblers is vibrant, energetic and addictive. It takes the form of, as one commenter wrote, a classical sonata-structure, complete with development section, invigoratingly intensified reprise, and a veritable whirlwind of a coda. This brass quintet arrangement retains the original key signature of C but adjusts register to make the melodies accessible and playable. As a result, most notes are well within the normal playing range of the five brass instruments. Trumpet 1’s highest note is its A above the staff. At measures 132 and 133, Trumpet 2 has the option of playing some high notes (including one C above its staff) an octave down. Tuba plays mostly in the lowest register, with quite a few low F notes and one low E. Most instruments have some octave jumps, but all have a lot of notes to play in a very short time: many, many sixteenth notes. The score is marked Vivace, and the audio sample moves along at a pretty fast clip. But of course, the speed at which performers actually play the piece is up to them, a matter of interpretation.   This arrangement was completed in 2019, and performance time runs about 3 minutes, 38 seconds.
