The greatest church in the greatest city of Europe. Freedom of intellectual thought. A Venetian School of composers at the forefront of musical innovation. The printing press and musical publishing. A Doge (Chief Magistrate or Duke) willing to spend, and spend big, on musical pomp and ceremony. A dearth of wealth and money to fund the grandest celebrations. He was the leading Italian composer and organist in Venice at its greatest heights at the chasm between the end of the Renaissance and the beginning of the Baroque period in music. Presented here is a Canzona published around 1615 for 8 brass divided into 2 choirs. A variety of substitute parts are also included to handle the trombone parts with French horns and tuba. Starting with one of Gabrieli’s more beautiful themes repeated in both choirs, the piece builds in technical complexity and rhythm until its exciting finale. A true delight for almost any audience!

I was at college in the late 70’s (RNCM) and the brass dep fave groups were EWF (and Maynard), we formed a band, brass and rhythm section called Brass Injection where the members of the band arranged EWF/Maynard/Blood Sweat and Tears/Steele Dan and the like. (5 tpts, 4 troms, tuba, rhythm section). We colleges giggled, Manchester gigged, and after 4 years we ended up in Ronnie Scott’s. In The Stone seemed to be a must for brass band and difficult dictation and I don’t like to leave things out or simplify. So I’m starting an EWF collection with September and Fantasy to come soon. The semiquaver syncs will take some time to give it the relaxed feel especially in the bass dep. Here’s to the memory of Brass Injection and RNCM days.

This is an arrangement for brass quintet of Ed Sheeran's best-selling song, Perfect. Ed described his song as the best love song of his career. It was the best selling song in the 1st half of 2018, reaching no.1 in the US, UK and in 16 other countries around the world.The arrangement features the trumpets, starting with a beautiful solo for 2nd trumpet, before the melody is passed on to the 1st trumpet. The other instruments have interest with rhythmic accompaniment, counter-melodies and lush harmonies. The accompaniment has a 1950's 'doo-wop' feel. There is a gradual crescendo throughout the piece, with a final uplifting chorus featuring the whole group before calming to a quiet and reflective finish.This arrangement is for a classical brass quintet, and could form part a mixed concert programme, or would work well as a stand-alone piece. Sweetwater Brass Press #4111581. Published by Sweetwater Brass Press (A0.808688). Henry Clay Work, Civil War era song writer and abolitionist, composed Kingdom Coming in 1862. Chicago’s Root & Cady published it in April of that year, Christy’s Minstrels premiered it and it became enormously popular. The lyrics to Kingdom Coming, also known as The Year of Jubilo, were written as though slaves in the Confederacy were celebrating their upcoming freedom. However, the song was actually released eight months before President Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation. Interestingly, Kingdom Coming also gained popularity in the South. A Southern edition was published in August in 1864, and the song remained a favorite in the former Confederacy for some years. Kingdom Coming has been used as theme or background music in a number of film, television and radio settings. Almost certainly its most popular iteration in modern times was the Sauter-Finegan Orchestra’s 1952 recording under the title Doodletown Fifers. This arrangement is a show-off piece for each member of the quintet. It moves along at a brisk pace of about 108, begins in the key of C and changes to A-flat, then B-flat. The first time through the melody, all instruments perform ensemble. Each succeeding repetition features an instrumentalist, starting with tuba and working up to Trumpet 1. The piece ends with another ensemble version. There are no exceptionally out-of-normal-playing-range notes: Trumpets 1 and 2 both play their B-flat below the scale several times, and Trumpet 2 plays G below the scale; Horn in F also plays its G below the scale; Trombone’s range is G at the bottom of the scale to D above the scale; Tuba’s lowest note is A-flat below the scale. Trumpet 1 will probably triple tongue its repetition of the melody, and some triple tonguing may be called for near the end of the piece for Trumpets 1 and 2 and Trombone. First released in 1994, and featured in the film Batman Forever, this song was a no.1 hit in the US and Australia.This arrangement features the trombone as the main soloist, with some wonderful moments for showcasing the rich, vocalistic tone of the instrument. The French horn also has some 'pearly' moments, starting with the opening introduction soaring high in the register. The trumpets also enjoy the melody during the chorus which features them playing together in octaves. Some moments in the trombone and horn part may be a little high for some players, but these will work just as well taken down an octave where necessary.This is a terrific song, with rich harmonies and lots of melodic interest. Elizabeth Raum's Quintet for Brass was written in 1980 and is just now being published for the first time. The work is in four movements: 1. Prelude, 2. Scherzo and Blues, 3. Passacaglia and Fugue and 4. Rondo. It is written for traditional brass quintet with Trumpets in B-flat for advanced performers and is about 15 minutes in length. The music is very expressive and tonal. Below is a brief description of the work by the composer, Elizabeth Raum. This piece is very much based on various musical forms. The Prelude has opened many a musical work from Baroque to the present. Then follows Scherzo and Blues, a light hearted bonbon moving into a lazy blues. Next is pure Baroque starting with a Passacaglia followed by a Fugue based on the Passacaglia progression. And finally finishing up with the Rondo, in a major key, light-hearted, canonic in places, with a feeling of the evolution of musical form.

Published by Lyons Music Services (A0.767277). As part of my continuing project to transcribe Monteverdi's madrigals onto winds, here is the 6th book. In this book we see a much greater development towards dramatic representation. In a way, this book is divisible into two Scenes with a number of single items in between. The vocal lines are all much more complex and we can also see the beginnings of monodic writing appear in the semi-recit sections of some of the songs. Also clearly developing are delineations of the voices into soloists and chorus. Several songs in this book are almost akin to arias, with clear soloistic writing for the higher voices (Cantus/Tenor). The songs starting from no 8 form a set of 6 to which Monteverdi gave a separate title Sestina Within this set of songs Monteverdi creates a little dramatic episode which foreshadows many of the developments that we find in his early operas: Monody/recitative, dialogue between chorus and soloist, a tendency to give the high parts strong melodic lines and a clear division of the roles of the singers. For the time being, until someone asks, I am not going to release the separate songs from Sestina individually as some of them are a little short. A sestina is a complicated verse form of six stanzas each of six lines with rules about repeating the last line of the first stanza. The poetic form is of little use to us as instrumentalists, but the dramatic mourning, cries of anguish and the feelings of loss embodied in the music will come through regardless of the lack of words. As with all things madrigalian, the lyrics are rife with double entendres.

The First Snow of Christmas is a gentle reflective piece for British Style Brass Band, written in 3/4 with lush harmonies, starting with Flugelhorn playing the lead with small accompaniment it grows in orchestration before returning to the smaller forces. There is a quote at the very end of a famous Christmas Carol which was the inspiration for this piece.
