The idea for this arrangement was given to me by an old friend who played in BR Edge Hill band with when we were kids, Christine Humphreys and to do it for bass trombone, the more I looked at it thinking of Eric Burdon’s voice from The Animals with his first verse nearly too low for him to scrape the lower notes and then the later verses near to top of his register suited. The Animals though in A minor, so for BT I dropped it to Ab minor a real shall we say juicy register for bass trombone plus the added attraction of setting it in the lower octave pedal area to show the instrument off. There aren’t may Bass Trom solos in the rep, so now we add one more!An interview with Eric Burdon revealed that he first heard the song at a club in Newcastle, England, where it was performed by Northumberland folk singer Johnny Handle.The Animals were on tour with Chuck Berry and chose him because they wanted to sing something different. The Animals version moves the narrative from the initial point of view of a woman drawn into a life of decline to that of a man whose father is a gambler and a drunk, rather than the adorable person of the previous versions.

Published by Phillip Lawrence (A0.883776). Swing? A recent subject to hit the brass band discussion pages, how to and how to notate. I think to teach correctly would be the way. Many jazz charts for brass band have been notated in a variety of ways, a lot in the old dotted quaver/semiquaver fashion which either including a triplet bracket or not is confusing, misleading and plainly inaccurate. So, to a young band of the 9/14 years, my approach is to give them just 2 notes to start, the longer and the shorter i.e Doo-da! And build ever so slightly from there also giving them a chance to chant the title The Brass Band Boo-gie. So in a simple non-running around many notes, we have very few, but put together with other swing rhythms in the piece we get a swung piece, also inc, some quavers (8th’s) not to swing and play straight a reminder to change! I was at college in the late 70’s (RNCM) and the brass dep fave groups were EWF (and Maynard), we formed a band, brass and rhythm section called Brass Injection where the members of the band arranged EWF/Maynard/Blood Sweat and Tears/Steele Dan and the like. (5 tpts, 4 troms, tuba, rhythm section). We colleges giggled, Manchester gigged, and after 4 years we ended up in Ronnie Scott’s. In The Stone seemed to be a must for brass band and difficult dictation and I don’t like to leave things out or simplify. So I’m starting an EWF collection with September and Fantasy to come soon. The semiquaver syncs will take some time to give it the relaxed feel especially in the bass dep. Here’s to the memory of Brass Injection and RNCM days.

Julius Katterfeldt was born in Wandsbek in 1813. Wandsbek was not yet part of Hamburg at that time. His father Johann Hinrich Katterfeldt was the organist at the famous Schnitger organ of Hamburg's main church St. Jakobi. He also gave his son first music lessons. Later he was a pupil of the famous Christian Heinrich Rinck in Darmstadt. Julius Katterfeldt was first organist at the church of St. Johannes in Eppendorf. In 1840, Katterfeldt was appointed by the Danish king to the post of cathedral organist in Schleswig. After the Schleswig-Holstein uprising (1848 to 1851) he had to give up his organist post at the cathedral. Friedrich von Reventlou (1797-1874) brought Katterfeldt to the monastery church in Preetz, where Renventlou was provost, because of the political quarrels over the county of Holstein. In Preetz he even had to take on sexton duties in addition to organ duties. After the war (Battle of Dybbøl/DK), Schleswig once again belonged to the Republic of Prussia. For this reason, the German Emperor had a new tower built for Schleswig Cathedral in 1864. It can be assumed that the church symphony by Julius Katterfeldt was composed for this purpose beforehand and was therefore later published by the renowned Berlin music publisher BOTE & BOCK. His Church Symphony Opus 18, for brassband and organ, is dedicated to the Prussian Emperor Wilhelm I. Katterfeldt’s Church Symphony is the first original symphonic work for the instrumentation organ and brass band. His son-in-law was the Schwerin cathedral organist George Hepworth (1825-1918). Through his contacts in England, some of J. Published by Phillip Lawrence (A0.883769). I recently published Romeo & Juliet Tchiakovsky which is a big bridge musically technically and and needs a big chunk of stamina. Before I did this there was another work on my mind of an opposite challenge for band in the orch rep dep.An impressionist work of great delicacy, subtle beyond belief, the fabric is fragile like lace with a feeling of transparency and lucidity and must move as if played by one person, colour and timbre, light, lithe, the orchestration a masterpiece, utilising fx from all dep’s often at ppp and most difficult to replicate at all for brass band.And, it’s a fair cop! The purists outsiders will say that this is the last piece that should be arranged for a brass band. So why arrange the greatest impressionist work ever written, for Brass Band?Well, because it’s there, and I believe it can be played with the above requirements by band. The work was written in the summer of 1894, and finished in the September. Three months later in December the Societe Nationale de Musique conducted by Gustave Doret with Marcel Moyse playing the opening flute solo gave the first performance. The concept of the piece was built around a poem by Stephan Mallarme, who describes the wishes and dreams of a faun in the heat of a summer afternoon. Prep for tres difficile?

This is the biggest tune from the Spanish Bull ring also adopted in Mexico. Played by many many world famous trumpeters like Mendez, Paco, Arturo on Youtube with John Williams conducting. As you know, big florid solo with much embellishing on repeat. My idea to have opposing cornets at either side of the stage taking the solo then on 2nd time using technical brinkmanship to out-do each other on the embellishing. You need two very good soloists.
