This composition was inspired by a cruise of the Mediterranean and visits to Italy, Croatia, and Greece. I was struck by the age and endurance of the structures and the history of the region. The hard work and thought that went into the construction of theses incredible buildings that have survived 1000s of years was amazing. I describe my musical style as neo polyphonic. I write each part as a spate melody or counter melody and the harmonization is what occurs naturally as they entwine. They are usually impressionistic in nature reflecting some action or scene. The First movement is my impression of walking on the ancient roman roads. I found them uneven and I I was wobbling all over the place. To me it sounds like a old wagon with different sized wheels going down the road with other traffic. The second movement. Is inspired by the great Cathedrals you find all through Europe. They are huge open and full of history. As you wonder through them you can feel the history and the devotion in them. The third movement evokes the fast ride of a cavalry unit scouting enemy territory and having a skirmish with and enemy then riding off.. It was inspired by all the history of conflict between the countries of the Mediterranean.

Published by Sweetwater Brass Press (A0.808684). Irving Berlin’s composition Alexander’s Ragtime Band was not only his first hit, it was also one of the most popular songs ever. It first gained widespread recognition when Emma Carus sang it in Chicago in 1911, and then it really took off when Al Jolson performed it in New York. It’s no wonder the popularity of Alexander’s has been so long-lived. Both words and music are absolutely bouncy and upbeat. The lyrics proclaim the Ragtime Band to be the best . . . in the land and invite the listener to come on and hear the group, even to meet its leader! The tune is energetic and lively, a salute to the toe-tapping Dixieland style that even then was developing in New Orleans.  This arrangement takes the natural exuberance of the melody and raises it a couple of notches. Wide open and sprightly, it features the trombone, but also gives each of the other parts a chance to shine, too. In addition to several iterations of the well-known chorus, it also includes the seldom-heard verse and even throws in a few true ragtime licks, quotes from Scott Joplin and Percy Wenrich. The tempo is a bouncy, cut-time 76, with some fairly tricky rhythms and one ritardando near the middle. Trumpet 1 plays a couple of notes above its staff, one A and one B. Trombone plays F above its staff several times and one brief G. Tuba’s lowest note is F below the staff. This arrangement was completed in 2018, and performance time runs about 4 minutes, 33 seconds. It is one of the first arias to prominently feature the natural horn alongside the solo vocalist and the extract is often required for horn auditions with opera orchestras.This arrangement for brass quintet features a solo trumpet performing the vocal line with the solo horn largely replicating the original extract from the opera, accompanied by the other three members of the ensemble. .

This tune was composed by Philip Paul Bliss (1838-76); an American writer of hymns and a Gospel singer. In the 2nd verse, the melody is taken up by the Baritones and Trombones in a very easy comfortable range. The Descant part is played in the 3rd Verse at the change of key; A flourish of Cornets and Horns finishes with a rousing climax in the final chords. This is a super cool version of Star Trek's Voyager! This arrangement has 10 parts. The 10th part can be played easily by a Tuba or Bass Trombone.
The 1st part starts with the first three notes being very high...although those three notes can be dropped down the octave and it will still sound great.
Parts 1 - 5 have Bass Clef and Tenor Clef versions.
As written... the ranges of the parts are as follows.
1st - D natural an octave above the staff down to B natural on the second line of the staff.
2nd - B natural an octave above the staff down to the B natural on the second line of the staff.
3rd - A natural an octave above the staff down to the B natural on the second line of the staff.
4th - B natural an octave above the staff down to the B natural on the second line of the staff.
5th - G natural an octave above the staff down to the D natural on the middle line of the staff.
6th - E natural an octave above the staff down to the G natural on the bottom line of the staff.
7th - G natural an octave above the staff down to the D natural on the middle line of the staff.
Bass 1 - G natural on the top space of the staff down to the D below the staff.
Bass 2 - F sharp on the second from the top line of the staff down to the A flat below the staff.
Tuba/Bass 3 - C natural on the second from the bottom of the staff down to the A below the staff.
