The idea for this arrangement was given to me by an old friend who played in BR Edge Hill band with when we were kids, Christine Humphreys and to do it for bass trombone, the more I looked at it thinking of Eric Burdon’s voice from The Animals with his first verse nearly too low for him to scrape the lower notes and then the later verses near to top of his register suited. The Animals though in A minor, so for BT I dropped it to Ab minor a real shall we say juicy register for bass trombone plus the added attraction of setting it in the lower octave pedal area to show the instrument off. There aren’t may Bass Trom solos in the rep, so now we add one more!An interview with Eric Burdon revealed that he first heard the song at a club in Newcastle, England, where it was performed by Northumberland folk singer Johnny Handle.The Animals were on tour with Chuck Berry and chose him because they wanted to sing something different. The Animals version moves the narrative from the initial point of view of a woman drawn into a life of decline to that of a man whose father is a gambler and a drunk, rather than the adorable person of the previous versions.

It was one of many I made for the Seras Brass Quintet which I helped form while studying at the University of Liverpool. In those days the brass quintet repertoire was limited and, to an impecunious student, expensive. Consequently we made many of our own arrangements and this one became a popular concert item – often used as an encore.We didn’t have Derby mutes (I still don’t!) but we managed to change the straight mute successfully enough. If it’s a problem just cover the bell with the left hand – the main thing is to create a different timbre, after all.

It is about anyone who can think about other things while they work—a truck driver, for example, or a farmworker. That’s not a news headline (though it would be quite a good one) but the title of a book by composer Peter Warlock which I read avidly after first encountering the Italian composer in a lecture at the University of Liverpool in the 1980s. We were studying the Italian madrigal, which was not really my thing until our lecturer threw Moro Lasso into the mix. Its opening chords seemed so incongruous – unlike anything we had heard – and are as striking today as they must have been in 1611 when first published in Gesualdo’s 6th Book of Madrigals.More or less immediately after that lecture I arranged the piece for the Seras Brass Quintet which I had helped form. In those days the brass quintet repertoire was limited, and certainly didn’t include anything by Gesualdo!The arrangement really benefits from a church-like acoustic where you can make the most of the dramatic built-in silences. The tuba part lies quite high and is very playable on a trombone if need be. Even to modern ears there are some strange sounds and I trust that all the ‘wrong’ notes are Gesualdo’s rather than mine – do let me know if you think otherwise!

This piece, Fables, Fiction and Folklore, is built on a mode and musical figure that can be transposed by a tritone while maintaining every note in the scale. In other words, whether it’s played in G or C#, the exact same notes are used. This mirroring of the musical figure is meant to symbolize how we see ourselves. We look in the mirror and see something that may look like us but is, in fact, as far away from reality as possible. Winterreise or Winter Journey takes me back to my days at music college when this was a set study piece. Twenty Four songs with sixteen (I think) in the minor key tell of the rejected lover's journey into winter, leaving behind his rich lover. This is an arrangement of the first song in the cycle. Performers need to make sure that the speed is kept to a moderate walk and that the solo parts, tuba and trombone are not drowned in too much of a Mahlerian style. Just enjoy and perhaps even read a good translation of the text before performing.

Please notify me if you choose to perform this!I need to give a big thanks to Dr. Greg Danner and the Tennessee Tech Tuba Ensemble for the help and guidance they gave to me while working on this piece! Also thank you to anyone I tortured with the many edits and editions before this was finalized. This piece is inspired by the following stanza from Paradise Lost: Whence and what art thou, execrable shape, That dar'st, though grim and terrible, advance Thy miscreated front athwart my way To yonder gates? Through them I mean to pass, That be assured, without leave asked of thee. Retire; or taste thy folly, and learn by proof, Hell-born, not to contend with spirits of Heaven. Here we see Lucifer, even after he has fallen so far, his wings bound by adamantine chains, still view himself with pride for being filled with the light of Heaven. He challenges Death, thinking himself superior to the foul (and more powerful) being. This piece explores the arrogance and emotions that I associate with the work as a whole, but particularly in Lucifer’s ego. The MP3 given here is just the render off of staffpad. Enjoy!
