The title Inventions' has a double meaning. The first meaning is that each movement represents a significant invention. The second meaning is each movement has sections reminiscent of a musical invention, a short contrapuntal composition that is usually based on a single theme. Movement 1 – The Wheel – This movement is a perpetual motion in triple meter. Movement II – The Metronome - The music in this movement represents a mechanical, wind-up metronome. Movement III – The Periscope - The movement is in an ABA'B' form. The A section, with its dark colors and slow 6/8 represents a submarine, lurking under water. The B section begins with ominous sounds that accompany the rising of the periscope and the scanning of the horizon for destroyers and for prey. Movement IV – Morse Code – The form of this movement is ABA’B’AB’’A’Coda. The A section rhythmically spells out the words brass trio in Morse code, first homophonically and then contrapuntally. The B sections spell out the names of the instruments playing the musical line in Morse code. The Coda spells out the words the end in Morse code. Movement V – The Airplane - This movement begins with a celebratory section in 7/8 and 6/8 representing the success of the Wright Brothers. After this festive beginning, a sustained melody represents the first flight that lasted 12 seconds with Orville at the controls. This melody also lasts 12 seconds. Accompanying the sustained melody is the steady staccato eighth note rhythm representing the sound of the motor. After a short celebratory interlude, another sustained melody of flight occurs with Wilbur is at the controls. The staccato eighth note motor accompaniment changes into a flowing triplet figure during 59-second flight, the longest of 1903. The flight melody now lasts 59 seconds as well. After a soft landing of the flight melody, the celebration theme ends the movement in a festive and exciting manner.

Sweetwater Brass Press #3872461. Published by Sweetwater Brass Press (A0.808687).   Brahms completed Six Pieces for Piano in 1893, just four years before his death. It was the second from last work he would write for solo piano, an introspective composition that he dedicated to Clara Schumann. To four of the six pieces he attached the label Intermezzo. Although the term originally defined a composition that was inserted between two other pieces-say, the movements of a suite or the acts of an opera-Brahms wrote them as independent works. And of these, the most popular is this, the Intermezzo in A major, andante teneramente. As described on the website Favorite Classic Composers, It's a sweetly melancholy piece, with a strong tinge of melancholy.  Except for a few items, this arrangement is not technically difficult. For the most part, Trumpet 1 plays the melody. Some of the notes are relatively high, the highest being C6 (high D for B-flat trumpet); there are several of those. Trumpet 2 has one brief A5 (high B). Trombone carries the heavy load; it has lots of oodle-oodles in the form of up-and-down eighth notes and triplet figures plus one F2. In the tuba part the range of notes is E1 to F3 and it contains a number of octave jumps. This is a beautiful piece, but it does require that each musician listen to the other four while playing.  This arrangement was completed in 2018, and performance time runs about 4 minutes, 55 seconds. Published by Phillip Lawrence (A0.883776). Swing? A recent subject to hit the brass band discussion pages, how to and how to notate. I think to teach correctly would be the way. Many jazz charts for brass band have been notated in a variety of ways, a lot in the old dotted quaver/semiquaver fashion which either including a triplet bracket or not is confusing, misleading and plainly inaccurate. So, to a young band of the 9/14 years, my approach is to give them just 2 notes to start, the longer and the shorter i.e Doo-da! And build ever so slightly from there also giving them a chance to chant the title The Brass Band Boo-gie. So in a simple non-running around many notes, we have very few, but put together with other swing rhythms in the piece we get a swung piece, also inc, some quavers (8th’s) not to swing and play straight a reminder to change! Published by All Brass Radio Publishing (A0.927011). This a British style brass band arrangement of Brahms' Trio, Opus 8 (for piano, violin, viola) that uses the major themes from Movement 1. It runs around 5 1/2 minutes long, has deep chords, running triplets, and some incredible themes. Brahms was a master at filling and changing chords by using techniques such as running triplets. Other parts are filled with full, deep chords made by the brass band that is much deeper than the original piano accompaniment and gives a unique sound that only a brass band can provide.Instead of using the full Movement 1 as Brahms wrote it, just the melodies were used and woven throughout the piece.It is a difficult piece with an extensive Marimba part as the primary percussion part.
