An original composition written for my very good friend in 2008, for euphonium and British Brass Band. Opening with an original choral, most of what follows is derived from this. In the faster section, there is a short motif that contrasts the slow moving material, driving forward towards the end. The piece is not easy, for the band or the soloist. My friend requested a piece that was both melodic, difficult, but also pleasant to listen to.

Your Favorite Christmas Hymns and Carols for Brass, Book 1Arranged for brass by Colin Kirkpatrick Here’s a brand new collection of best-loved Christmas hymns and carols arranged for brass, to brighten up your next Christmas event. They are presented in a set of two books and include full four-part instrumental scores plus parts for 1st B flat trumpet, 2nd B flat trumpet, horn in F (with a separate optional part for horn in E flat), trombone and/or tuba. The tuba part is also optional because it either doubles the trombone part or plays an octave below. Both trombone and tuba parts appear on a single staff in the bass clef at concert pitch. The arrangements can be used with brass quartet, brass quintet or brass ensemble. There’s also an optional but useful simplified keyboard part intended for less experienced keyboard players. The left hand plays only the bass part most of the time, with the right hand part kept as simple as possible. It could be used as the basis of an accompaniment which means that you can use the arrangements as solos, duets or trios.The arrangements are intended either as stand-alone pieces that could be used as interludes in a concert or service, or they could be used to accompany solo, choral or congregational singing. The arrangements been written in brass-friendly keys as often as possible. While the hymns mostly use the traditional harmonies, the carols have been treated more freely. The publication consists of full scores for each hymn plus separate instrumental parts and an optional simplified keyboard part. All the arrangements are in four parts, reflecting the traditional SATB voicing. The parts include 1st trumpet in B flat; 2nd trumpet in B flat; horn in F; horn in E flat; trombone and optional tuba; optional bass in B flat and bass in E flat. There are also two optional baritone parts in B flat (TC) and C (BC) in case you need them. They are the same as the tenor part. In some carols, you might prefer to assign any baritones to doubling the bass or doubling the melody an octave lower. The baritone part in C is also playable by trombone. The trombone and tuba parts appear on a single staff. Of course, you can use any number of instruments to a particular part. The optional keyboard part has been simplified and whenever possible limited to single notes in the left hand part and no more than two-note chords in the right. Using the keyboard part, you can use the arrangements as solos, duets or trios.
