Brass Ensemble - Level 3 - SKU: A0.808708 Composed by George Job Elvey. Arranged by F. Leslie Smith. Christmas,Easter,Praise & Worship,Sacred. Score and parts. 27 pages. Sweetwater Brass Press #6477787. Published by Sweetwater Brass Press (A0.808708).     George J. Elvey composed Diademata to serve as the melody for Matthew Bridges’ hymn Crown Him with Many Crowns. Published in 1868, its name derives from diadema, the Greek word for crown, which is also the source of the English word diadem. Diademata remains the most frequently used tune for Crown Him with Many Crowns.      This arrangement contains five versions of the melody. It opens with a quotation from bars 5-8 of Elvey’s score to introduce the arrangement. The first time through the 16 bars of Crown Him with Many Crowns the tempo is marked Andante e Rubato: that is, take it moderately slow but feel free to speed up or slow down in your interpretation. Two instrument pairs take turns doing this-Trumpets 1 and 2, and Horn in F and Trombone. The remainder of the piece should be played at an up-tempo speed of about 120 bpm.

Brass Ensemble - SKU: A0.883782 Composed by Anon. Arranged by Phil Lawrence. 20th Century. Score and parts. 31 pages. Phillip Lawrence #4338685. Published by Phillip Lawrence (A0.883782). The original folk tune as picked up in the 1960's by Simon & Garfunkle, for Intermediate/Jnr. Brass Band. The tune is anon and indeed very old. In my title, the word Impressions is used to describe the harmonic style which is decidedly French of a Darius Mihaud style or even a light Messian. It should keep the young players on their toes in an aural sense and the tuning of a challenge, and perhaps feeling rather musically grown up delivering this in a concert?

Brass Ensemble - Level 4 - SKU: A0.1049261 Composed by Friedrich von Flotow. Arranged by F. Leslie Smith. Classical,Pop,Romantic Period. Score and parts. 18 pages. Sweetwater Brass Press #653628. Published by Sweetwater Brass Press (A0.1049261). The first performance of "Martha, or The Market at Richmond," a romantic comic opera by the German composer Friedrich von Flotow, took place in Vienna in 1847. Subsequent presentations were performed in a number of other languages, including Hungarian, Czech, English and Italian. Two of the most memorable arias from Martha are “The Last Rose of Summer” and “Ach! so fromm.” “Last Rose” was, of course, based on the poem by Thomas Moore. “Ach! So fromm,” known more familiarly by its Italian lyric, “M'appari, tutt'amor,” was an original composition by Flotow, a piece he had composed for an earlier opera and inserted into Act 3 of Martha as Lyonel’s tenor solo. In 1955, The Crew Cuts, a Canadian pop singing group, recorded a song titled “Mostly Martha.” Written by Dorcas Cochran (words) and Ralph Sterling (music), it charted in early 1956. As so many pop song writers have done, Sterling borrowed the melody from a piece of classical music: “M’appari.” While “M’appari” and “Mostly Martha” share the same melody, the words and sentiment are quite different. Lyonel laments that Martha has left him, while The Crew Cuts jauntily proclaim, “Mostly Martha, Mostly Martha. What has she got? She's got the most.” This brass quintet arrangement takes a middle ground. It follows closely the basic structure of Flotow’s operatic aria but does so in a sort-of up-tempo manner and with a great deal of variation in the accompaniment. It’s not really The-Crew-Cut-style “She’s got the most,” but it’s certainly more positive than Lyonel’s song of longing. The piece starts with a suggested tempo of 90 bpm, changes to 80 at section C, and speeds up to 92 at the end. All instruments get a turn playing the melody, and there are no really tricky rhythmic patterns. There are, however, grace notes, rallentandos, an “a piacere” and a number of fermatas. All notes are, for the most part, within normal playing range of each of the five instruments, with two exceptions: near the end Trumpet 1 has an A above its staff, followed two measures later by a high B-flat. Completed in 2022, performance time runs about 2 minutes, 45 seconds. The arranger, Les Smith, will be happy to provide substitute parts (for example, treble clef baritone for trombone) at no charge. He would like to receive your suggestions, comments, corrections and criticisms. Also, purchase of this piece entitles you to your choice of another of his arrangements at no charge; send a copy of your purchase receipt to him directly at lessmith61@bellsouth.net. For more arrangements by Les, enter "Sweetwater Brass Press" (without the quotation marks) in the search box. Brass Ensemble - Level 3 - SKU: A0.808706 Composed by Fred Fisher. Arranged by F. Leslie Smith. Folk,Holiday,Jazz,Patriotic,Traditional. Score and parts. 40 pages. Sweetwater Brass Press #6215233. Published by Sweetwater Brass Press (A0.808706).     Orville and Wilbur Wright made their famous flight in late 1903; this song was published seven years later: Fred Fisher’s music with Alfred Bryan’s lyrics. The words form a narrative of a young man attempting to get his girlfriend to go up with him in his flying machine. And, that would take much more daring on her part than one might realize today. The year 1910 was still early days for aviation; most airplanes were still made of wood, wire and fabric and looked liked giant gliders. Supposedly, the Josephine of the song was Josephine Sarah Magner, reputed to be America’s first female parachutist. Magner married Leslie Burt Haddock, whose aviation career started in balloons, and made her first jump in 1905. During the next dozen years, she made more than 500 jumps. Pretty daring!    This arrangement is quirky and an absolute delight to play (and to listen to)! The first half is set in the song’s native ¾ time. The takeoff is the introduction, followed by the chorus, then the verse and again the chorus as the melody loops, rolls and spins through the five instruments. A middle section briefly quotes two other aerialist tunes-He flies through the air with the greatest of ease and Up in the air Junior Birdmen-and serves as a transition to cut time. A swing version of the chorus brings us in for a landing and final fade.    The arrangement begins in the key of C major and changes to G major during the transitional section. Suggested tempo is 76 bpm throughout. The arrangement comprises 202 measures: Horn in F plays the most notes, followed by Trombone and Tuba, while Trumpets get off relatively lightly. All notes are well within the normal playing range of the instruments; Trumpet 1 does, however, play A above its staff several times.    Completed in 2021, performance time for Come, Josephine in My Flying Machine runs about 3 minutes, 45 seconds. The arranger, Les Smith, will be happy to provide substitute parts (for example, treble clef baritone for trombone) at no charge; contact him directly at lessmith61@bellsouth.net. Brass Ensemble - Level 4 - SKU: A0.755276 Composed by Sy Brandon. 20th Century,Concert,Contemporary. Score and parts. 52 pages. Sy Brandon #4798435. Published by Sy Brandon (A0.755276). The title Inventions' has a double meaning. The first meaning is that each movement represents a significant invention. The second meaning is each movement has sections reminiscent of a musical invention, a short contrapuntal composition that is usually based on a single theme. Movement 1 – The Wheel – This movement is a perpetual motion in triple meter. Movement II – The Metronome - The music in this movement represents a mechanical, wind-up metronome. Movement III – The Periscope - The movement is in an ABA'B' form. The A section, with its dark colors and slow 6/8 represents a submarine, lurking under water. The B section begins with ominous sounds that accompany the rising of the periscope and the scanning of the horizon for destroyers and for prey. Movement IV – Morse Code – The form of this movement is ABA’B’AB’’A’Coda. The A section rhythmically spells out the words brass trio in Morse code, first homophonically and then contrapuntally. The B sections spell out the names of the instruments playing the musical line in Morse code. The Coda spells out the words the end in Morse code. Movement V – The Airplane - This movement begins with a celebratory section in 7/8 and 6/8 representing the success of the Wright Brothers. After this festive beginning, a sustained melody represents the first flight that lasted 12 seconds with Orville at the controls. This melody also lasts 12 seconds. Accompanying the sustained melody is the steady staccato eighth note rhythm representing the sound of the motor. After a short celebratory interlude, another sustained melody of flight occurs with Wilbur is at the controls. The staccato eighth note motor accompaniment changes into a flowing triplet figure during 59-second flight, the longest of 1903. The flight melody now lasts 59 seconds as well. After a soft landing of the flight melody, the celebration theme ends the movement in a festive and exciting manner.

Brass Ensemble - Level 4 - SKU: A0.808712 Composed by F. Leslie Smith. Arranged by F. Leslie Smith. Children. Score and parts. 37 pages. Sweetwater Brass Press #6656487. Published by Sweetwater Brass Press (A0.808712).   Gremlins, trolls and hobgoblins. All are imaginary or supernatural, products of folklore. The first is a mischievous elf. The second, a product of Scandinavian imaginations, is a rather unattractive dwarf (or maybe a giant) that dwells in caves or on mountains. The third is a small, hirsute and naughty household spirit. In other words, these are just the types of beings that show up on your doorstep on October 31 evenings threatening to play tricks unless you provide treats.  This composition exemplifies not only these creatures, but also the witches, skeletons, ghosts, vampires, black cats and other scary beings that populate Halloween. Written in the key of C minor with a 6/8 time signature, it rolls along at a suggested tempo of 96 BPM. Based primarily on the traditional melody, The Hearse Song (the worms crawl in, the worms crawl out), it also quotes the composer’s own The Eerie Night and Chopin’s Marche Funèbre. And like the worms of the song, the melodies work their way sinuously in and out among the five instruments. Most notes are well within normal playing range: Trumpet 1’s highest is five A notes above its staff; Tuba’s lowest, G below the staff. There are no tricky rhythmic figures. It’s just a fun piece for Halloween . . . or any time of the year.  Completed in 2021, performance time for Gremlins, Trolls and Hobgoblins runs about 3 minutes, 33 seconds. The composer, Les Smith, will be happy to provide substitute parts (for example, treble clef baritone for trombone) at no charge. He would also like to receive your suggestions, comments, corrections and criticisms. Contact him directly at lessmith61@bellsouth.net. Brass Ensemble - Level 4 - SKU: A0.808682 Composed by Turner Layton (1894-1978), Henry Creamer (1879-1930). Arranged by F. Leslie Smith. Holiday,Jazz,Pop. Score and parts. 32 pages. Sweetwater Brass Press #3454039. Published by Sweetwater Brass Press (A0.808682).     After You’ve Gone, composed in 1918 by Turner Layton (melody) and Henry Creamer (lyrics), was a hit from the beginning. Al Jolson introduced it to live audiences, Marion Harris’ record went to #1 in early 1919, and since then dozens of artists have recorded it . . . and many are still doing so. The words are rather sad-she’s leaving and he’s trying to get her to stay-but played up tempo, the melody is bouncy and fun. That sad-versus-happy dichotomy is incorporated in this arrangement. It begins with a bright, bouncy introduction and first-time-through of the chorus, then slows so the Horn in F can play a melancholic and somewhat schmaltzy rendition of the verse. The Tuba provides a transition back to the upbeat chorus, and we are again off to the races. Layton’s melody slips and slides from one instrument to the next (with the Tuba getting an entire iteration all to itself!), until the pace again slows for a 4-bar reminder of the sentimental verse, which then gives way to a rousing Dixieland-like closing.

Brass Ensemble - Level 3 - SKU: A0.912839 Composed by Turner Layton. Arranged by Keith Otis Edwards. Traditional. Score and parts. 16 pages. Volitant Music #3569267. Published by Volitant Music (A0.912839). This song was written in 1918 by Turner Layton with words by Henry Creamer. Most performances of late play it up-tempo, but I believe the melancholy nature of the song calls for a slower tempo and a more pensive arrangement.

Brass Ensemble - Level 3 - SKU: A0.817619 Composed by James Bland. Arranged by F. Leslie Smith. Folk,Spiritual,Traditional. Score and parts. 28 pages. Sweetwater Brass Press #424503. Published by Sweetwater Brass Press (A0.817619). James Alan Bland, composer of “In the Evening by the Moonlight,” was a prolific song writer. He is said to have created the words and music for more than 600 compositions. Born in 1854 to a free African American family in Flushing, New York, he made a name for himself as musician, composer and minstrel performer. Among his compositions were “Oh, Dem Golden Slippers,” “In the Morning in the Bright Light” and “De Golden Wedding.” His most famous song by far was “Carry Me Back to Old Virginny,” which the State of Virginia used as its official anthem for over 50 years. Bland, in keeping with his persona as a minstrel, wrote the lyrics to “In the Evening by the Moonlight” in dialect. Years passed and sensitivities changed, but the song’s poignant melody and basic sentiment survived. Latter day recordings, such as those by Bing Crosby and the Ray Charles Singers, dropped the dialect and objectionable terms. One of the most notable versions was by singer, pianist and civil rights activist Nina Simone, released in 1960 on the album Nina at Newport. This brass quintet version begins with the group instrumentally humming along under an eight-measure Horn in F introduction. The first statement of the melody initially takes the form of a partial call-and-response between a Trombone/Horn duo and Trumpet 1, then switches to an exchange between Trumpet 1 and Tuba. Next, the melody is repeated but in a rhythmic pattern reminiscent of the 1880 tune “Here Dem Bells”; Tuba plays counterpoint. Third time around, the melody is presented almost exactly as Bland wrote it and as Hitchcock’s Music Store published it in 1880. Finally, the tempo slows and the melody is presented as so many have sung it around campfires at YMCA, 4-H and other youth camps all over the country: softly and tenderly. The arrangement ends with a brief recapitulation of the introduction. There are no really difficult or tricky rhythms in this arrangement. Trumpet 1’s highest note, which occurs in Section D, is A above its staff; Tuba’s lowest, G below the staff. Otherwise, there are no exceptionally high or low notes. The piece opens in the key of F major then, about halfway through, changes to G major. Tempo opens with a suggested MM of 104, speeds up to 120, slows to 66, increases again to 122 and finally slows to 66. Completed in 2022, performance time runs about 4 minutes, 22 seconds. The arranger, Les Smith, will be happy to provide substitute parts (for example, treble clef baritone for trombone) at no charge. He would also like to receive your suggestions, comments, corrections and criticisms. Contact him directly at lessmith61@bellsouth.net. Brass Ensemble - Level 4 - SKU: A0.808685 Composed by F. Leslie Smith. Arranged by F. Leslie Smith. Children,Holiday,Traditional. Score and parts. 83 pages. Sweetwater Brass Press #3631645. Published by Sweetwater Brass Press (A0.808685).   What is a Rumpus? Most definitions include words such as noisy disturbance, commotion and uproar. Sort of like the sounds from a group of neighborhood children in the days before play dates, private lessons and organized kids’ sports. These sounds were part and parcel of the games they played, games that originated years, even centuries, before and involved high energy levels and top-of-their-voices counting, chanting or singing (with an occasional Nyah-nyah nyah-nyah nyah nyah thrown in for good measure!). Rowdy and raucous, indeed!  This composition is one that will entertain both adults (who, after all, are just grown-up children!) and youngsters. Like children at play, it races right along. In one 6-minute work, it incorporates tunes of eleven children’s game and campfire songs: Michael Finnegan; Ring a Ring o’ Roses; Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star; London Bridge; Hickory Dickory Dock; Three Blind Mice; John Jacob Jingleheimer Schmidt; My Pony Boy; Old MacDonald Had A Farm; The Farmer in the Dell and Bingo. And, again, like children at play, there is fun, humor and a surprise at every turn.  A Rowdy, Raucous Rumpus is a hoot to play. At a cut-time tempo of 132 and with 14(!) changes of key, it keeps all five musicians on their toes. And busy: on the Tuba part, there are V.S. (turn the page quickly) indications on the bottom of 6 of the 8 pages, 5 for Trombone and Horn in F, 3 for Trumpet 2, and 2 for Trumpet 1. In Bingo, the last tune, the group intermittently stops playing and claps or foot-taps loudly (which is a good spot for audience participation!). On the audio clip, this is indicated with a click (actually, a tambourine sound).  There are a few high notes scattered throughout. Trumpet plays B above its staff once and A a number of times. Trumpet 2 has one A above its staff. Trombone has one F above its staff. Tuba has one G in the top space of its staff.
