Stochastic Duo for tenor and bass trombones was written during 1986 when I was working at the Xenakis UPIC studio in Paris (Clamart), France. The use of probabilities in the form of a duo enabled me to incorporate the stochastic character while still having a dialogue between two instruments. There is also a piano piece 'Stillness' based on this same principle. The duration is 7'45.

Versatile Brass 'Old Time Favourites' CollectionThis is another popular song from the WW2 era, although it was written a few years before for a film of the same title.Sing As We Go is a 1934 British musical film starring Gracie Fields, John Loder and Stanley Holloway. The script was written by Gordon Wellesley and J. B. Priestley.Considered by many to be British music hall star Gracie Fields' finest vehicle, this film was written for her by leading novelist J.B. Priestley. In this morale-boosting depression movie, set in the industrial north of England, Fields stars as a resourceful, determined working class heroine, laid off from her job in a clothing mill, who has to seek work in the seaside resort of Blackpool. This gives her the opportunity both to fall into many misadventures and, of course, to sing.The decision to film on location brings the film a life and immediacy all too absent from most films of the period. The film provides us with a snapshot of life in a seaside resort in the 1930s. The final scene of the millworkers returning to the re-opened mill while Fields leads them in the rousing title song has become an almost iconic film cliché.This is a simple arrangement of the title song with the lead line on solo Cornet. There is a vocal part included if required.

Also thank you to anyone I tortured with the many edits and editions before this was finalized. This piece is inspired by the following stanza from Paradise Lost: Whence and what art thou, execrable shape, That dar'st, though grim and terrible, advance Thy miscreated front athwart my way To yonder gates? Through them I mean to pass, That be assured, without leave asked of thee. Retire; or taste thy folly, and learn by proof, Hell-born, not to contend with spirits of Heaven. Here we see Lucifer, even after he has fallen so far, his wings bound by adamantine chains, still view himself with pride for being filled with the light of Heaven. He challenges Death, thinking himself superior to the foul (and more powerful) being. This piece explores the arrogance and emotions that I associate with the work as a whole, but particularly in Lucifer’s ego. The MP3 given here is just the render off of staffpad. Enjoy! Sweetwater Brass Press #4111581. Published by Sweetwater Brass Press (A0.808688). Henry Clay Work, Civil War era song writer and abolitionist, composed Kingdom Coming in 1862. Chicago’s Root & Cady published it in April of that year, Christy’s Minstrels premiered it and it became enormously popular. The lyrics to Kingdom Coming, also known as The Year of Jubilo, were written as though slaves in the Confederacy were celebrating their upcoming freedom. However, the song was actually released eight months before President Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation. Interestingly, Kingdom Coming also gained popularity in the South. A Southern edition was published in August in 1864, and the song remained a favorite in the former Confederacy for some years. Kingdom Coming has been used as theme or background music in a number of film, television and radio settings. Almost certainly its most popular iteration in modern times was the Sauter-Finegan Orchestra’s 1952 recording under the title Doodletown Fifers. This arrangement is a show-off piece for each member of the quintet. It moves along at a brisk pace of about 108, begins in the key of C and changes to A-flat, then B-flat. The first time through the melody, all instruments perform ensemble. Each succeeding repetition features an instrumentalist, starting with tuba and working up to Trumpet 1. The piece ends with another ensemble version. There are no exceptionally out-of-normal-playing-range notes: Trumpets 1 and 2 both play their B-flat below the scale several times, and Trumpet 2 plays G below the scale; Horn in F also plays its G below the scale; Trombone’s range is G at the bottom of the scale to D above the scale; Tuba’s lowest note is A-flat below the scale. Trumpet 1 will probably triple tongue its repetition of the melody, and some triple tonguing may be called for near the end of the piece for Trumpets 1 and 2 and Trombone. I wrote the Fanfare and Scherzo for this quintet in 1979 using an ink pen and manuscript paper the old-fashioned way. These two movements were premiered by The Palos Verdes Brass Quintet that year and then were largely forgotten as I started working in non-musical areas the next year.After I retired, I ran across them while cleaning out my desk and offered them to the current PVSB Brass Quintet (none of whom were in the original group) and they graciously played them again. I always intended to write two more movements and finally did it 40 years later.The Lullaby calls for flügelhorns and has a vocal part. It is not intended to be sung necessarily but for the lyrics to provide a mood for this dark piece, which is probably best suited for Eddie Munster or Lio. I have sort of a warped sense of humor. The Finale is more serious, but not that much. Aside from the Scherzo the piece is not too difficult. The duration is about 12 minutes.

It is a work song, from the point of view of dock workers working the night shift loading bananas onto ships. The lyrics describe how daylight has come, their shift is over, and they want their work to be counted up so that they can go home.The best-known version was released by American singer Harry Belafonte in 1956 and later became one of his signature songs.I am happy to present this arrangement to you in the original key. Other percussive instruments may be used, including steal drums, using the basic rhythms contained herein.

Bella Ciao (Goodbye Beautiful) is an Italian protest folk song from the late 19th century, originally sung by the seasonal female rice paddy workers in Northern Italy in protest to the harsh working conditions. The song was modified and adopted as an anthem of the Italian resistance movement by the partisans who opposed the Nazi occupiers between 1943 and 1945. Versions of Bella Ciao continue to be sung worldwide as hymns of freedom and resistance. Written during the Covid -19 Pandemic, Variations on “Bella Ciao’ was inspired by the scenes of music- making by Italian musicians during the darkest days of the pandemic. From rooftops, balconies and deserted piazzas, people continued to express themselves in testaments to the human spirit. This arrangement follows the standard British Brass Band format and includes full set of parts.

From 1975, Sean Brennan lived in London, working as a freelance musician. During this period, his first compositions were written including his best know work, the concert overture ‘The Cutty Sark’ which was performed and recorded by the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra in 1986. Sean Brennan spend the 1980s in New Zealand where he gained a reputation as an expert in orchestration and arrangement, producing work for a wide variety of ensembles from chamber music to full orchestra. At this time, he also became involved in the music publishing business. This is an arrangement for Brass Band. It's an exciting piece which is suitable for concerts and competitions alike.You can listen to the orchestral/original version on Youtube Orchestral score and full set of parts are available on request.
