Abide with MeThis arrangement will be useful to accompany congregational or choral singing (as it is in suitable keys) or it can be used as a purely instrumental piece. After a short introduction the tune is presented simply - a key change before the final verse leads to a majestic presentation of the tune with an effective descant.This arrangement is suitable for school bands and ensembles as well as more experienced players. First of all, it was always my thinking that through small ensembles teaching balance, blend, articulations and dynamics can possibly be more effective in a small ensemble and eventually evolve from this setting into the overall concert band setting. Secondly, to teach form of the musical composition, in this case, an early version of the fugue. Last of all, to expose students as a pertinent example of where and when the music was composed and to what order of circumstances it was created.

This book has posed some issues as it is such complex music it is almost impossible to cut it down to 5 parts while maintaining its integrity. As a result, some songs will be in 6 or more parts. O viva fiamma has fairly simple harmonies, so I was able to reduce it to 5 parts.O viva fiamma is a duet for two sopranos, The title translates as O living flame and is a passionate - and quite vivid - description of the act of love. All the o - o - o-ing is quite graphic! Good job the words are missing from this version!The seventh book is quite a change from the earlier ones. Monteverdi seems to be concentrating on developing solos and duets, trios and small accompanied ensembles. The accompaniments are often written out with more than just long note chords. The intricate instrumental parts are more than just filling in the harmony (hence the difficulty in paring them down.)Once again, these songs are exquisitely crafted and travel well onto brass.

Steinberg (A0.870434). This arrangement of a popular fanfare from Handel’s Water Music has been commonly played at church services and weddings for many years. The Water Music itself is a collection of pieces written at different times between 1717 and 1733. It is not clear as to the setting these were written for although most speculation seems to believe that these were pieces written for King George I during his many river outings. The collection of the pieces was assembled and published under the title Water Music in 1740. Although commonly written for small orchestra or larger brass ensembles, usually with two F Horns, this arrangement has been specially scored for a standard brass quintet instrumentation. In addition, the seldom played middle section has also been included. The fanfare’s popular melody is easily recognized by audiences and the work is still as exciting today as it was when first performed in the 18th century.
