Bach, Prelude from Suite No. 1 for CelloAdvanced Intermediate LevelUnaccompanied Violin part: 2 pagesTime: 2:10Yes, making music with others is one of the best things about being a violinist, and a string duo, trio or quartet is great for weddings and other private or corporate events.  But sometimes through constraints of availability / space / budget – or just for the thrill of it - we need to go it alone.  That’s when music for unaccompanied violin (not merely solo violin) comes into its own.Here’s the glorious Prelude from Bach's Cello Suite No. 1 in G major, transposed into D major so it can be played on the violin.  Although the original version is the epitome of celloism, Bach will hopefully be okay with this since he himself rearranged and transposed the Prelude from his solo violin Partita No. 3 in E major. The present articulation is based on the copy made by Bach's wife, Anna Magdalena, during his lifetime.  If you like this, please check out my other arrangements for unacompanied violin: Bach's Air from Suite No. 3 in D (“Air on the G Stringâ€); Ain't Misbehavin'.

It was premiered at the closing ceremonies before 100,000 people in the Olympic Stadium, with 10,000 world-class athletes from around the world in attendance, as well as 3.5 billion people from the television viewing audience.Mr. O'Connor wanted to write a fiddle tune that brought celtic sounds from Europe mixed in with the American folk music to give an international flavor to the style. One of Mr. O'Connor's friends and colleagues, Natalie MacMaster, was the artist to first record this music on CD, and she subsequently asked the composer to join her in a version that accommodated both of them on fiddles. The result was fiddle fireworks, Olympic style! Mr. O’Connor got the idea for the piece while performing with his Hot Swing Trio, preparing material for future recordings and tours. He also was inspired by his good friend and musical colleague Wynton Marsalis, thus the tittle M(ark) & W(ynton’s) Rag. Mr. O’Connor often performed Rags in fiddle contests during his youth, and this genre is well-known in traditional American fiddle music circles. He also feels that this kind of music serves as a precursor to jazz and swing as well, and has been included in the Hot Swing Trio repertoire.
