The Purpose of my music is to mythologize the world around us: to not only signify but make significant the experience of life. In doing so, I attempt to reach beyond what can be described in words, to the transcendent and spiritually profound, and to take the listener with me. Mine is not music to be analyzed, but experienced. The art Kulning is the practice in rural Norway and Sweden of singing high pitched melodies to call livestock herds down from the high mountains where they would graze. The songs can be unique to an individual, but are often family based so that the animals know the specific melody of their owners' calls. Glances, Repose for unaccompanied violin was written in 1979 and the performing time is about seven and a half minutes. It is in one movement comprising four sections. Section two is quiet and still and flanked by sections displaying striving and progression. The fourth and final section is also energetic, but is pinned down by pedal points. The title reflects this form: it suggested the image of the face of an Indian dancer who glances with the eyes but whose other facial features remain passive. This image is appropriate also because it has associations with the wide-ranging and outward-directed motion of the outer sections, as well as with the 'glancing bow' of the fourth section.Two melodic ideas provide the basis of the music, one active and twelve-tone, the other, passive and more limited. The work requires many types of expression and technique from the performer.

In notes spread across two systems the violin displays its characteristic contrasting qualities. The instrument contradicts itself: staccato notes cut in abruptly within a legato line, quiet phrases are interrupted by an expressive fortissimo, while a stubbornly contemporary answering voice is set against Bach's formal language. Shchedrin succeeds in finding a remarkably powerful way of reminding every solo violinist that their instrument is inhabited by at least two different souls.

Programme Notes: Icarus Also Flew takes its title from the first line of the poem Failing and Flying by Jack Gilbert. He is referring to the classical myth of Daedalus and Icarus, an inventive father and son who bravely escape from their imprisonment in a tower by collecting the disposed feathers of seabirds, then fashion wings out of them and fly away. A piano solo begins the conversation, followed by a response by the violin and two of them enter into the conversation. The piano and violin each performs different themes and rhythms with individual personality. First they take turns to express themselves, and then their monologues interact with each other. Although there might be disagreement and argument between them, this do not last long. The changes in speed imply the transitions of their emotions. An open conversation is free of forms. I honestly believe that sitting close together and having an open conversation is extremely precious and delightful, and is a common experience shared by everyone. The whole piece is immersed in a harmonious atmosphere of peaceful conversation. The violin and piano gently wave their goodbyes at the end.

By Mike Strand, ASCAP This is a lead sheet for a jazz combo or ensemble, a good basis for a variety of arrangements, improvisations, or contrafacts. The audio sample is my melody from Finale PrintMusic, combined with an iReal Pro swing accompaniment. I’ve designated the melody for solo violin, an instrument that I would like to see and hear more often in jazz ensembles. You will hear a violin carry the melody in the audio sample. Playing the solo on violin solves a possible difficulty in performance. Problem: This piece may be too challenging for many wind instrument players (brass, woodwind). Solution: This piece is well suited to a non-wind instrument player! Violin springs to mind. Violin is especially appropriate here: This tune has lots of notes; similar to a solo violin partita prelude or up-tempo dance movement by J. S. Bach. A wind instrument player told me that finding spots for taking a breath was a challenge. This is not to discourage wind players from experimenting with the piece, adjusting it in places if necessary. A wind player may include more breathing spots for relief in his or her improvisation! Note for composers: I adapted this piece from the 5th (swing) movement of my Partita II, for solo violin, also for sale on this site.
