By Mike Strand, ASCAP This is a lead sheet for a jazz combo or ensemble, a good basis for a variety of arrangements, improvisations, or contrafacts. The audio sample is my melody from Finale PrintMusic, combined with an iReal Pro swing accompaniment. I’ve designated the melody for solo violin, an instrument that I would like to see and hear more often in jazz ensembles. You will hear a violin carry the melody in the audio sample. Playing the solo on violin solves a possible difficulty in performance. Problem: This piece may be too challenging for many wind instrument players (brass, woodwind). Solution: This piece is well suited to a non-wind instrument player! Violin springs to mind. Violin is especially appropriate here: This tune has lots of notes; similar to a solo violin partita prelude or up-tempo dance movement by J. S. Bach. A wind instrument player told me that finding spots for taking a breath was a challenge. This is not to discourage wind players from experimenting with the piece, adjusting it in places if necessary. A wind player may include more breathing spots for relief in his or her improvisation! Note for composers: I adapted this piece from the 5th (swing) movement of my Partita II, for solo violin, also for sale on this site.

In notes spread across two systems the violin displays its characteristic contrasting qualities. The instrument contradicts itself: staccato notes cut in abruptly within a legato line, quiet phrases are interrupted by an expressive fortissimo, while a stubbornly contemporary answering voice is set against Bach's formal language. Shchedrin succeeds in finding a remarkably powerful way of reminding every solo violinist that their instrument is inhabited by at least two different souls.

This is quite a challenging arrangement, and is intended for advanced players. It is perfectly suited for a virtuoso recital piece or an impressive concert encore. Note: the live audio and video are from the cello version; the violin version is identical, but it has been transposed to A minor to better fit the instrument.

The talents of Cuban-born violinist Joseph White (born José Silvestre de los Dolores White y Lafitte) were recognized by the American pianist and composer Louis Moreau Gottschalk (1829-1869) who had accompanied him on an early recital. Gottschalk raised the money so the young Afro-Cuban virtuoso could go to Paris and study with Jean-Delphin Alard, one of the great violinists and teachers of his day. White won the Premier Prix at the conservatory in 1855 and received high accolades from such musical giants as Berlioz, Gounod, Rossini, and Saint-Saëns, as well as German violin virtuosi Ferdinand David and Joseph Joachim. Following his 1855 prize (one of several more to come) Joseph White became a major force in the cultural life of Paris for the next twenty years. His Six Studies, Op. 13, demonstrate to those were never privileged to hear him his absolute command of his instrument. The overall set is dedicated to Alard with individual studies dedicated to Alard and to four of Europe’s premiere violinists, Camillo Sivori, Henri Vieuxtemps, Henryk Wienawski, Hubert Léonard, as well as to his fellow Cuban, Secondino Arango. These are studies for the serious violinist, or for the advanced student aspiring to achieve the same technical prowess of this incredible virtuoso performer and composer. Contained within this volume are the original exercises, biographies of the six dedicatees, as well as extra information about the life and career of this criminally forgotten violin virtuoso. These works should be considered for the studios of master teachers and for live performance as virtuoso showpieces, or recital encores, especially number six, which is dedicated to one of White's first teachers, Afro-Cuban violin virtuoso Secundino Arango (179?-1876).

It was a compulsory piece for the semi-final round. Receiving great interest to all of his caprices from performers, teachers and students of the violin, O’Connor has contributed music here which will challenge even the most gifted virtuoso. O’Connor’s caprices, like Nicolo Paganini’s and Pietre Locatelli’s, push the violin into a new direction, musically and technically, furthering the possibilities of the instrument. “Menuhin Caprice†features demanding techniques which are desirable for study purposes, and at the same time, are accessible to concert audiences. The violinist will find passages containing complex rhythms, broken chord arpeggios, various spicatto and double-stopped runs. In addition to these specialized skills, the violinist must master the works’ driving and aggressive rhythms in order to perfect the performance of them. Villa-Lobos composed Chôros No. 1 in Rio de Janeiro in 1920, originally publishing it under the title Chôro tÃpico, then Chôro tÃpico brasileiro. The title is taken from an improvisational genre of Brazilian instrumental popular music that originated in Rio de Janeiro in the nineteenth century. The Portuguese word choro, means cry or lament, though most music of this type is far from being sorrowful. Four years after composing this work, at the time of his first visit to Paris, he decided to make it part of an extended cycle of works collectively titled Chôros, which eventually included fourteen numbered compositions, plus an Introduction aux chôros (Introdução aos chôros): Ouverture, for guitar and orchestra, designed to be played before a complete performance of the cycle, and Chôros bis, a two-movement duo for violin and cello, considered as a sort of encore piece. A Quintet (em forma de chôros), for five woodwind instruments (1928) is sometimes considered as related.In the context of the larger cycle, Chôros No. 1 is like the essence, the embryo, the psychological model that will be developed technically in the conception of all the Chôros (Villa-Lobos 1972, 210).The score of Chôros No. 1 is dedicated to Ernesto Nazareth, and a recording of it made by the composer lasts just under four minutes. Unlike the successor works, there is no attempt here to synthesize different aspects of Brazilian music into a stylistic montage. Instead, it employs the patterns, figurations, and simple structure characteristic of the improvised music of such celebrated chorões of the late-nineteenth and early twentieth centuries as Zequinha de Abreu, Quincas Laranjeiras [pt], Chiquinha Gonzaga, and Catulo da Paixão Cearense [pt] (Wright 1992, 62) This simplicity and the beauty of its composition have made it a favourite with professional guitarists (Appleby 2002, 80).Originally for Guitar, adapted for Solo Violin by Inacio Saldanha.
