The Purpose of my music is to mythologize the world around us: to not only signify but make significant the experience of life. In doing so, I attempt to reach beyond what can be described in words, to the transcendent and spiritually profound, and to take the listener with me. Mine is not music to be analyzed, but experienced. The art Kulning is the practice in rural Norway and Sweden of singing high pitched melodies to call livestock herds down from the high mountains where they would graze. The songs can be unique to an individual, but are often family based so that the animals know the specific melody of their owners' calls. The talents of Cuban-born violinist Joseph White (born José Silvestre de los Dolores White y Lafitte) were recognized by the American pianist and composer Louis Moreau Gottschalk (1829-1869) who had accompanied him on an early recital. Gottschalk raised the money so the young Afro-Cuban virtuoso could go to Paris and study with Jean-Delphin Alard, one of the great violinists and teachers of his day. White won the Premier Prix at the conservatory in 1855 and received high accolades from such musical giants as Berlioz, Gounod, Rossini, and Saint-Saëns, as well as German violin virtuosi Ferdinand David and Joseph Joachim. Following his 1855 prize (one of several more to come) Joseph White became a major force in the cultural life of Paris for the next twenty years. His Six Studies, Op. 13, demonstrate to those were never privileged to hear him his absolute command of his instrument. The overall set is dedicated to Alard with individual studies dedicated to Alard and to four of Europe’s premiere violinists, Camillo Sivori, Henri Vieuxtemps, Henryk Wienawski, Hubert Léonard, as well as to his fellow Cuban, Secondino Arango. These are studies for the serious violinist, or for the advanced student aspiring to achieve the same technical prowess of this incredible virtuoso performer and composer. Contained within this volume are the original exercises, biographies of the six dedicatees, as well as extra information about the life and career of this criminally forgotten violin virtuoso. These works should be considered for the studios of master teachers and for live performance as virtuoso showpieces, or recital encores, especially number six, which is dedicated to one of White's first teachers, Afro-Cuban violin virtuoso Secundino Arango (179?-1876).

A San Francisco Conservatory-trained violinist and chamber musician (B.M. with Camilla Wicks, M.M. in Chamber Music as a student of Bettina Mussumeli), Alisa complemented her formal violin training with extensive studies of improvisation, composing, and the rich American fiddle traditions. This is an original composition by Hungarian violin virtuoso Nandor Szederkenyi, former concertmaster in several major orchestras from Japan to Austria, who also had a long career as soloist.Incorporating probably all major violin works, particularly concertos written in D minor or major, it may be called the ultimate cadenza. A typical violinistic piece for solo violin, like a cadenza, but meant more as an encore than a cadenza, as there are so many quotations of different works involved. It is a fantasy, thematic ideas flowing freely, demonstrating modern violin techniques, which gives lots of fun for the player and audience.

Review: ...My dictionary gives three definitions of 'Intermezzo,' also the name of a world premiere for violin and piano, Reiko Nishioka on violin and the composer, Gary Noland, on piano. Included are the words 'light character.' If so, the piece has intercalary intermezzos of its own smoothly segued between sections of sophisticated sobriety-or vice-versa. I's a romantic romp, rhythmically robust yet melodically flirting with the nostalgia of cabaret, minus the sleazy diminution of spilled drinks and smelly ashtrays.
