Caprice No. 7 in C Major (unaccompanied violin) MO176 Unaccompanied Violin Music by Mark O’Connor 6 pages - 3:15 minutes in length Caprice No. 7 in C Major for unaccompanied violin is a composition by Mark O’Connor derived from his own “Caprice For Three†he recorded with Yo-Yo Ma and Edgar Meyer. Receiving great interest from performers, teachers and students of the violin, O’Connor has contributed music here which will challenge even the most gifted virtuoso. O’Connor’s caprices, like Nicolo Paganini’s and Pietre Locatelli’s, push the violin into a new direction, musically and technically, furthering the possibilities of the instrument. “Caprice No. 7†features demanding techniques which are desirable for study purposes, and at the same time, are accessible to concert audiences. The violinist will find passages containing complex rhythms, various spicatto and double-stopped runs. In addition to these specialized skills, the violinist must master the works’ driving and aggressive rhythms in order to perfect the performance of them. This collection is appropriate for the advanced student but isolated selections could be valuable for the intermediate. Original music printed from the composer’s manuscripts. Villa-Lobos composed Chôros No. 1 in Rio de Janeiro in 1920, originally publishing it under the title Chôro tÃpico, then Chôro tÃpico brasileiro. The title is taken from an improvisational genre of Brazilian instrumental popular music that originated in Rio de Janeiro in the nineteenth century. The Portuguese word choro, means cry or lament, though most music of this type is far from being sorrowful. Four years after composing this work, at the time of his first visit to Paris, he decided to make it part of an extended cycle of works collectively titled Chôros, which eventually included fourteen numbered compositions, plus an Introduction aux chôros (Introdução aos chôros): Ouverture, for guitar and orchestra, designed to be played before a complete performance of the cycle, and Chôros bis, a two-movement duo for violin and cello, considered as a sort of encore piece. A Quintet (em forma de chôros), for five woodwind instruments (1928) is sometimes considered as related.In the context of the larger cycle, Chôros No. 1 is like the essence, the embryo, the psychological model that will be developed technically in the conception of all the Chôros (Villa-Lobos 1972, 210).The score of Chôros No. 1 is dedicated to Ernesto Nazareth, and a recording of it made by the composer lasts just under four minutes. Unlike the successor works, there is no attempt here to synthesize different aspects of Brazilian music into a stylistic montage. Instead, it employs the patterns, figurations, and simple structure characteristic of the improvised music of such celebrated chorões of the late-nineteenth and early twentieth centuries as Zequinha de Abreu, Quincas Laranjeiras [pt], Chiquinha Gonzaga, and Catulo da Paixão Cearense [pt] (Wright 1992, 62) This simplicity and the beauty of its composition have made it a favourite with professional guitarists (Appleby 2002, 80).Originally for Guitar, adapted for Solo Violin by Inacio Saldanha. Glances, Repose for unaccompanied violin was written in 1979 and the performing time is about seven and a half minutes. It is in one movement comprising four sections. Section two is quiet and still and flanked by sections displaying striving and progression. The fourth and final section is also energetic, but is pinned down by pedal points. The title reflects this form: it suggested the image of the face of an Indian dancer who glances with the eyes but whose other facial features remain passive. This image is appropriate also because it has associations with the wide-ranging and outward-directed motion of the outer sections, as well as with the 'glancing bow' of the fourth section.Two melodic ideas provide the basis of the music, one active and twelve-tone, the other, passive and more limited. The work requires many types of expression and technique from the performer.
