The title Toccata comes from the Italian word toccare meaning to touch and generally implies a composition that has many fast notes featuring technical and virtuosic playing requiring great finger facility. The subtitle though is Eccentric Dance and as I wrote it I had in mind the Tarantella dance originating from the province of Taranto, Italy. This dance has two aspects, a stately court dance, which you can hear in the middle section of the work and a more frenetic, agitated movement which is heard in the first and final section. This supposedly originates from the jerky, hysterical and spasmodic body actions of a victim bitten by the wolf or tarantula spider common to that region of Italy. The ‘whirling, delirium’ tarantella dance is most often written in 6/8 and is played faster and faster and ends only when one of the dancers gives up in exhaustion! Toccata was written as a test pice for the Singapore National Piano and Violin Competition, 2017, and is 5.00 minutes in length.

Toccata aims to showcase the performer’s virtuosity in a numerous amount of ways. The piece opens with a sixthteenth note pattern that is the core of the work, and expands upon the pattern implementing various harmonic changes throughout. In the middle of the piece a theme is presented in 4/4 time which gives way to high scalar runs which is interrupted by the beginning pattern and repeated over again. After this, there is a return of the beginning idea, which is taken through several different keys until arriving in G minor. At the end of the piece the theme from the middle is presented in its full glory, and in 3/4. The piece closes with a G minor chord being built from the bottom up and added portamento before the final chord.

The chorus of birds, one species after another, unite in a wild and genuine polyphony while the dew and mist evaporate upon the rising of the sun, encouraging goosebumps and shivers from an open window, tempered or exhilarated by a cup of coffee. Have you ever actively witnessed the sun’s sultry and intense ascension from the cradle of the horizon? That is what this piece, Aubade, or Dawn Song, is about. An aubade is the twin of a night-time serenade; an aubade is a love song originating amongst the medieval Provençal troubadours, depicting the morning departure between two lovers. An aubade is a song in honor of the slow cosmic percolation of a late summer morning. On a personal level, the composer is reminded of his own experiences camping in Northern Canada as a young man–a simpler and less demanding time. This piece formally begins the series I composed during the Covid-19 quarantine conditions of 2020, to serve as potential contemporary preludes for each of Ludwig van Beethoven’s nine symphonies–his two hundred and fiftieth anniversary was this year!–though they can all stand on their own on any program. The connection, in this case, is with his first symphony; I envisioned, once my piece concludes, his beautiful drawn-out chords presenting themselves–the dawn of his special genius.About the Composer: Benjamin Sajo (b. 1988) is a Canadian composer of contemporary classical music, as well as an educator. Since developing a fiercely independent creative voice upon the completion of his studies at Western (2010) and McGill Universities (2013), he continues to find inspiration from the intersection of mythology, art, and nature upon the contemporary human experience. In 2019, he released his premiere album of original music, The Great War Sextet: Canadian War Poetry with Trombone & Strings, with support from the Ontario Arts Council. He is a member of SOCAN and the League of Canadian Composers.

Fugue: Wear Pearls and Smile is, on the outset, a fast, rambunctious adventure for many voices playing at the same time. It was conceived as a pairing for the equally vivacious second symphony of Ludwig van Beethoven–his 250th birthday is this year–but can stand on its own as one of my hardest, most challenging works to cook up.This piece is dedicated to those forced to appear positive when internally they’re falling apart. The title is inspired by a quote that’s been with me for a while, Why is it that men can be bastards and women must wear pearls and smile? by Lynn Hecht Schafren, the celebrated American jurist famous for campaigning for gender equity in courts. I’m taking the quote out of its initial context, but the power of that quote, for me, exemplifies how hard it is to maintain a sense of emotional decorum and dignity when you’re authentically a hot mess. And what’s more of a musical hot mess than a fugue?There are two realities to this piece. I’ll quote Dmitri Shostakovich, from his autobiography: The rejoicing is forced, created under threat, […] It’s as if someone were beating you with a stick and saying, ‘Your business is rejoicing, your business is rejoicing,’ and you rise, shaky, and go marching off, muttering ‘Our business is rejoicing, our business is rejoicing.’ On the one hand, it is insincere happiness, cloying perhaps. But the other truth, I’ll quote Oscar Hammerstein II, from The King and I: While shivering in my shoes / I strike a careless pose / And whistle a happy tune / And no one ever knows, / I'm afraid. I forced myself, against all impulses of my current being, to forge happiness. This piece, with its origin being a mental puzzle (fugues are puzzles), it became a construct where I could lift myself up and regain a sense of purpose. Since developing a fiercely independent creative voice upon the completion of his studies at Western (2010) and McGill Universities (2013), he continues to find inspiration from the intersection of mythology, art, and nature upon the contemporary human experience. In 2019, he released his premiere album of original music, The Great War Sextet: Canadian War Poetry with Trombone & Strings , with support from the Ontario Arts Council. He is a member of SOCAN and the League of Canadian Composers.

Villa-Lobos composed Chôros No. 1 in Rio de Janeiro in 1920, originally publishing it under the title Chôro tÃpico, then Chôro tÃpico brasileiro. The title is taken from an improvisational genre of Brazilian instrumental popular music that originated in Rio de Janeiro in the nineteenth century. The Portuguese word choro, means cry or lament, though most music of this type is far from being sorrowful. Four years after composing this work, at the time of his first visit to Paris, he decided to make it part of an extended cycle of works collectively titled Chôros, which eventually included fourteen numbered compositions, plus an Introduction aux chôros (Introdução aos chôros): Ouverture, for guitar and orchestra, designed to be played before a complete performance of the cycle, and Chôros bis, a two-movement duo for violin and cello, considered as a sort of encore piece. A Quintet (em forma de chôros), for five woodwind instruments (1928) is sometimes considered as related.In the context of the larger cycle, Chôros No. 1 is like the essence, the embryo, the psychological model that will be developed technically in the conception of all the Chôros (Villa-Lobos 1972, 210).The score of Chôros No. 1 is dedicated to Ernesto Nazareth, and a recording of it made by the composer lasts just under four minutes. Unlike the successor works, there is no attempt here to synthesize different aspects of Brazilian music into a stylistic montage. Instead, it employs the patterns, figurations, and simple structure characteristic of the improvised music of such celebrated chorões of the late-nineteenth and early twentieth centuries as Zequinha de Abreu, Quincas Laranjeiras [pt], Chiquinha Gonzaga, and Catulo da Paixão Cearense [pt] (Wright 1992, 62) This simplicity and the beauty of its composition have made it a favourite with professional guitarists (Appleby 2002, 80).Originally for Guitar, adapted for Solo Violin by Inacio Saldanha. (SO. ) Like a Beethoven song and country dance, this piece offers pleasing melodies for the beginner who is well along, both to study and to perform in recital. (2) MUSICBOX. (SO. ) This short easy piece imitates the sound of a music box, including its running down at the end. For instruction it can serve to introduce the student to light staccato bowing or up and down slurred staccato bowing. For performance it can serve as an amusing interlude. (3) HYMNSONG. (SO. ) In the form of an etude, this piece consists of a simple theme with numerous variations, somewhat like Paganini’s famous Caprice 24. Of intermediate difficulty, it offers double stops, tremolo, and various bowings. For performance it can be played as is or it can easily be shortened by omission of one or more passages. (4) MOTHER’S STORIES. (SO. ) Varying from sweet to dramatic, this simple composition offers an opportunity for emotional interpretation. This is a three movement pantonal work for unaccompanied solo violin. Each movement has it's own personality and character. The first begins freely and expressively in the beginning and builds momentum to a somewhat sporadic series of various motivic manipulations, ending in an aggressive, accelerating repetition of the motif, which can be heard in various places of the following two movements. The second movement, somewhat more quirky, is meant to provoke a sense of temporary confusion and disorientation. The pizzicato open G in the first few measures is the disorienting element, interrupting the melody every few beats. The rest of the piece gradually becomes more and more playful before slowing down as if unsure what lies ahead.The third movement is the shortest of the three. It begins very eerily and slightly chilling with a downward glissando on artificial and natural harmonics. It almost seems as if a character in a story is lost in an unfamiliar place, trying to find the way home. As the movement progresses, it builds in expression and intensity the way a light in the distance becomes closer as one walks closer to it. From this climax, to the end, it becomes gradually softer and slower, mimicking the burning embers of a dying fire, reminiscing of warmth and comfort.
